We've been quiet, but we've been busy! Delighted to share that in recent weeks we have received 3 NIH R01s to continue our studies of adaptive immunity in the gut! As such, we are recruiting post-docs with strong interests and expertise in mucosal immunology and antigen-specific T and B cell 1/3

eww but also fascinating research that could give a clue as to why a normally harmless pond-dwelling amoeba can turn into a deadly brain eating parasite if infects us. Looks like it preferentially looks for narrow channels (but not too narrow) to live in and once in just keeps swimming.

"Institutions must avoid a dangerous and emerging misconception: that academic research should be financially self-sustaining. Historically, society has not expected classical music to justify its existence through commercial profitability, and neither should it expect fundamental science to do so."

I love this bacterial immunity field, it’s so cool! The bacteria have already done all the cool #innateimmunity pathways

The shared principles of human and bacterial antiviral immunity An honor to highlight remarkable discoveries from many labs over the past 12 years that unite previously disparate fields of how animal cells and prokaryotes defend against viruses. www.nature.com/articles/s41... rdcu.be/fzwyB

The man's skeletal injuries looked like a train hit him, but he died in 1304 CE. At #ppa26Berlin last week, @uniofbradford.bsky.social scientist Jo Buckberry concluded he was likely whacked by a flying boulder, making him the first confirmed trebuchet death in the archaeological record. @science.org

I’m tired of having to say cyclosporida or spell clyclosporiasis. Repurposing the longtime favorite “gastrocatastrophe” and adding “the old Clyclo” to the mix. Maybe “they got cyclosped” or “just a touch of the clospors” to keep things interesting.

I wonder, if at any point during the 10 years of The Odyssey, at any point, did any of the crew ask "Are we there yet?" Keep that in mind when watching the movie #ChristopherNolan #MattDamon #Odyssey ........

I posted this 2 years ago prior to the 2024 election. They really spelled it out, and enough Americans were fine with it to let this horror show proceed. We're over halfway there. What a disaster. #Project2025

There are so many tech companies now named after Lord of the Rings (Palantir, Anduril, Earendil…) Very concerned that in 20 years tech will be disrupted by Hufflepuff Industries

NIAID employees did not receive any communication about these leadership changes until this afternoon, when the institute sent out an unsigned email.

My thoughts on Director Bhattacharya's Fireside Chat at the NAM workshop (a long 🧵) Overall (1) He clarified what he said that NIH is doing with regard to improving replication. While these are concrete steps, they seem either naive or dependent of unproven technology. Time will tell. 1/30

My kids have measles, I can't afford gas, and I'm going to be dead within 2 years now that the CDC cancelled funding for the mRNA treatment that might have save my life. But at least now we have Secretary of War who is a Pulp Fiction fan.
