An excellent reminder that pesky health and safety regulations evolved from a long history of suffering and death.

This Day in Labor History: October 27, 1948. An air inversion trapped the pollution spewed out by U.S. Steel-owned factories in Donora, Pennsylvania. The Donora Fog killed 20 people and sickened 6000 others. Let's talk about this deadly legacy of industrial pollution. That photo was taken at noon!

Imagine the system that creates a man of such astounding racism, ignorance and dishonesty, and allows him to rise to such a position of power. He is bullshit in human form.

What’s that you say? Liz has a new book out which even the Telegraph is saying is even more unhinged than the last one? Wonderful, I’ll post this then.

100% this - had a bit of this years ago when my dad died. I remember Lloyds bank saying we had to convert his bank account into a “club or society” account for some reason. I’m sure this is only going to get worse as AI replaces humans at the interface.

Prince Maurice's grave is interesting, because it was a good example of the conflicting thoughts families had. Princess Beatrice refused repatriation of the body. She felt he belonged with his men. But she fought for years for the right to spend her own money on a custom headstone. This was blocked

Remembering Prince Maurice of Battenberg, the youngest grandchild of Queen Victoria, who was killed in action on this day in 1914, aged just 23. In December 1918, his cousin, King George V, visited his grave to pay his respects. 📍 Ypres Town Cemetery 🇧🇪

Shout if you're a historian potentially interested in coming on for this one. i want to cover the discussions on repatriation, changes to headstones and Anglican ritual, and post-war grave tourism and grave photography services. @caitlindeangelis.bsky.social your wheelhouse maybe?

i really want to do a pod episode on the emotional mechanics of post-war rememberance. the logistics and architecture are both fascinating, but we don't talk enough about its impact on both national and personal approaches to grief.

Those wonderful people from @ofmooseandmen.bsky.social have done it again, with this wonderful book from Simon Crump. Compassionate without being sentimental, funny af (I genuinely laughed out loud several times) and compelling. Simple story telling done ever so well. Chapeau.

I know everyone will be talking about Walter Koenig's role in Star Trek ad nauseum - but for me, his role as the black uniformed Sci-Cop Bester in Babylon 5 was chillingly scary.

Unsolicited writing advice, no. 3609: If ever you feel discouraged, know this. Every day you get up to write is an act of courage. Every word you manage to write is a light against the darkness. You may not see it from where you are now, but it's there. It's shining.
