its an interesting empirical question and i'd actually have a weak prior its wrong. Its true most people dont understand urban systems are metropolitan in scale. But the ~25% pop FHFA defines as rural are not really drive-till-you-qualify people, i dont think www.fhfa.gov/blog/insight...

Many such cases. "I live in a small town" but are actually just a fully integrated part of the economy of like, Milwaukee that just chooses to live in the sticks. *stares blankly in Regional Science* here's Luc and Dan, a mere forty years ago, discussing the inferential issues in spatial regression, which were already very well-known at the time

"To put it bluntly, an X post today receives less than 3% of the views a single tweet delivered seven years ago." If you think it is necessary to be on Twitter to communicate your fact-based worldview, the reality is that worldview is being smothered.

After almost twenty years on the platform, EFF is logging off of X. This isnโ€™t a decision we made lightly, but it might be overdue. ๐Ÿงต (1/5) www.eff.org/deeplinks/2...

BREAKING: In response to huge cuts in Trump's budget request, NSF is shuttering its SBE directorate. Staff will be transferred to other parts of the agency and "grants that align with Administration priorities" will be maintained. That & more w/ @maxkozlov.bsky.social & @edwrdchen.bsky.social

Just some creepy armed Mad Max guys trying to gain entry to Dodgers Stadium. ICE says it wasnโ€™t them. DHS says they were Border Patrol. But honestly who the hell knows? Theyโ€™ve given permission for any psycho to put on a ski mask, point a gun, grab people & throw them into an unmarked vehicle.

Kare 11 local news just read, in full, this statement from Michael and Susan Pretti, the parents of Alex Pretti. "Please get the truth out about our son."

dot density maps arent my favorite, but they can be really rich ways of looking at multigroup segregation. If you know the area a bit, you dont even need a legend to recognize what these categories represent. One thing i havent seen before is a combo of dot density with dasymetric mapping

the quality of the allocation is really just a function of the dasymetric mask, so this feels like a pretty useful concept i'll stick in `tobler`. This also lets you play with DGPs other than uniform (e.g. clustered poisson), which can get interesting)

(you can tell i was thinking a bit about @kylewalker.bsky.social 's LEHD maps this week... :P)

All 13.5 million jobs in Texas, visualized by sector with block-level precision. The just-released 2023 LODES data is one of the most underrated public datasets.

here im using NLCD to allocate CA's population to only "developed" areas (pixels 22,23,24), which isnt perfect but works pretty well @kylebarron.dev 's `lonboard` continues to impress. This is 15M points (40% of CA's total pop) and embedding the data in standalone html ends up ~450mb w/ no delay

Announcing spopt-r: spatial optimization for regionalization, facility location, and market analysis in R. My all-time favorite Python package is PySAL's spopt - and until now, it did not have an R equivalent. Get started here: walker-data.com/spopt-r

My favorite #Python package to use is spopt, a library for spatial optimization. It helps you with: ๐Ÿ“Š Facility location planning; ๐Ÿ“Š Sales territory design; ๐Ÿ“Š Maximizing market share; And much more! Check it out here: pysal.org/spopt/

among the many distinctions in *geospatial analysis*, it seems like physical geographers use "AI" in the 'traditional' sense of, like, deep nets applied to imagery data. whereas human geographers use it in the LLM sense of, like 'please vibecode my work for me because i asked so nicely'

Open Geospatial Workshop happening at #AGU25 in Room 333 today! I will be teaching interactive mapping and GeoAI from 9:45-11:45 AM. Registration is required is to attend, but I heard that they will be checking badges at the entrance until 9:30 AM.

in other words, this: "geo" is already such a huge umbrella that 'geoai', as a term, is basically meaningless

Timnit Gebru@timnitgebru.blacksky.app

Wildly different things, tasks, techniques, subspecialties being lumped into "AI" and then being conflated with each other, doesn't help. Different types of models vs the techniques to train them vs the tasks they are supposed to accomplish, all under "AI".

*chefs kiss* remote sensing is AI now, because $

Is logistic regression "AI"? What about convex optimization? Is LLM AI? What about an image recognition system built without using "feature learning" techniques but done through "feature engineering"?

to be clear, i dont think 'artificial intelligence' is really an accurate description in either context and both groups are using it because marketing, but the physical geography application is much more appropriate ...even though human geog, as a social science, is a much harder discipline :P
