Corollary: The reason we should want to boost housing supply is not that it will lower housing costs, but because it will allow more people to live in dense urban areas.

Dan Davies@dsquareddigest.bsky.social

a) there is no such thing as "housing", locations are poor substitutes for one another b) people sort themselves into locations so that the 33% ratio is preserved therefore, constructing new housing has very low elasticity in terms of the effect on measured "affordability"

So, this is still going on. If you can evade being caught on-the-scene, it is perfectly legal in New York City to ram someone with a car. The police will treat you, the victim, like you're a pain in the ass.

A pedestrian who was nearly killed by a hit-and-run driver in Midtown this summer only learned later — after weeks of silence — that the NYPD had closed the 'open-and-shut case' without finding the perpetrator. buff.ly/Otq7uXf

Victory through effort and study is illegitimate, an expression of "low cunning" that inverts the natural hierarchy. Victory is only legitimate if it is ordained by God.

Some ground rules that have helped us: - Go outside your bubble, try new social media channels - Don’t underestimate the power of WhatsApp (although less so in the U.S.) - Post on the Instagram grid, not just stories - Watch every Instagram video until the end before sharing - IGNORE THEM

even with an astonishing 34 bans, once again it's still an impossible act for konami to address every issue with the format at once; while elfnote & rolad aren't as oppressive & combo slop is dead, the omnipresent asshole gorilla is still ruining games with his dumb tesla cannon & dome shield

I think "the creeps" is the least valuable reaction in the world and you have a responsibility to not be controlled by it. You are far more likely to have a false positive "creep" reaction to a language barrier or autism or disability than you are to an actual danger to your well-being.

The thing that disgusts me most is the disgust response. It disgusts me how many people will forsake their ostensible political and social values to justify feelings of disgust as rational and righteous, rather than interrogating those feelings and making real assessments of risk.

Transphobia and homophobia are disgust responses. They are expressions of hyperactive "uncanny valley" criteria, taught (or not un-taught) and reinforced by a culture that yearns to indulge in satisfying forms of cruelty.

I think about the Uncanny Valley a lot. I think about how real people with limb and facial differences, with motor control disabilities, with autism, or even people who just don't meet beauty standards, get un-personed by the Valley.

I think it's a form of tremendous arrogance to think you can accurately judge someone's heart by their affect or appearance. When you flatten affect and actions, innocent actions become sinister. It becomes self-reinforcing. You construct entirely fiction versions of people to hate and fear.

"I was a dumbass for X, Y, Z reasons. Material reality made me see the error of my ways" is actually incredibly uplifting stuff, especially from a 25 year old with a blue collar job and a HS diploma. He was a teenager during Trump 1

I'm sorry but banning non-English speakers because machine translation is unclean is more fascist than anything in the AI space except maybe Palantir's XAI enterprise account

hooooo boy we don't like this no we don't > If you don't speak English, you need to find a different community. We cannot distinguish between AI-written and AI-translated. Since you don't speak English, you can't even verify yourself if it translated correctly. www.reddit.com/r/opensource...

I've come to realize the older I get that the incoming group of new ppl in fandom spaces everywhere tries to be woke but doesn't wanna give up the high school drama culture so it just results in useless vapid critique being treated as some big moral failing

A lot of the criticism I see rallied towards bunlith show isnt at the show's actual quality or anything but the fact that bunlith herself is a little quirk chungus. Hunny we're all gonna be quirk chungus at some point. You're not gonna be cool forever.

the thing to focus on is how few democrats are actually doing it. the vast majority of democrats running this fall are not cutting bigot ads, which is good because it means we can crush these people in the future

Here at the Shinra office, overheard a new employee talking about video games. Turned around and told them that I have faith in three companies, the three B's: Bethesda, Bioware, and Blizzard. He turned his head away with a huge grin on his face as he said, "Yeah, those are pretty strong companies"

to weigh in on the arcade game discourse earnestly: i’ve been slowly getting into them more and more lately, playing both shmups and beat em ups, having a great time with both and i think they’re extremely inviting and fun and rewarding even and arguably especially at lower skill levels

deeply depressing also to see replies to this post saying "well i just want to see pretty lights i dont like getting better at stuff." games as art indeed

Painful review of the Capcom Beat 'Em Up Bundle on Steam that really highlights how destructive the continue system was to people's perception of arcade games. The beat 'em ups mentioned play wildly different from one another if you're actually trying to survive on 1 credit.

ultimateframedata.com/sf6/ it's really bad. UFD just had gifs of SF6 moves with hitboxes visible. they're claiming that data extraction like this is against their TOS. probably older games are safe but if they keep pressing this with SF6 i can't imagine many sites will want to host capcom resources

the idea that you're allowed to play a game entirely determined by hitboxes, frame data, move properties, etc. and experience the interplay of those with your senses, but you are NOT allowed to document them with numbers and images, is fucking crazy and stupid. get the fuck outta here Capcom
