Big Scotts's Tots energy

Elon Musk has said he will give every child in America a stake in SpaceX, his $2 trillion aerospace and artificial intelligence company, as tech firms face intensifying scrutiny over their impact on society. https://cnn.it/4yWTjTJ

Growing up, my family ran a train and riverboat tour in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. I spent my summers growing up on and around this 200 capacity vessel. I've had to scrape and paint this thing a ridiculous amount of times.

treelaw perverts on reddit must be beside themselves with this East Potomac golf course tree removal case

Molly Roberts@mollyroberts.bsky.social

DOJ: Talking about tremoval compatible/not compatible. With what? KG: Period of significance: foundation period. As a whole, 1917-1941. Compatible = species, viewline, size of tree. Views and vistas identified in CLR. DOJ: Compatibility is broad things discussed in CLR. Right? KG: Yes.

After lunch with a friend, I visited a nearby bookshop on a whim looking for an Emily Wilson translation of the Odyssey. An employee found it in the Classics section and she commented that someone else had recently asked for the same translation. Inspired to read by a podcast series about it

I've been working at food banks / pantries at least once a week for the past ~5 years, seen over 20 different mobile pantries operate and currently staff an indoor pantry on Wednesdays. These mobile pantries take a lot of work to run well and I want to shout out some of the critical roles 🧵1/n

Truck Driver At my mobile pantries, the food starts at a central warehouse and is taken by semi to the distribution site. The driver unloads the truck using a pallet jack, hoping the lift gate doesn't break again. Only employees can operate the truck, so this can be a bit of a bottleneck 🧵

Woman In Charge Yes, it nearly always a woman. She serves at the church which hosts the pantry and provides the volunteers. She manages the volunteer roster, the relationship with the grocery rescue and can do intake if a volunteer drops at the last moment.

Food Distribution Station Take milk jug from crate, deposit in car, repeat. It's not sexy work, but the backbone of a pantry is people hauling food from a pallet to a car pulling forward through the line. Parking Attendant Keep cars flowing by the stations, and don't get run over. Be LOUD 🧵

Visitor Intake At a mobile pantry, this person is walking the lineup of cars getting a count of people being picked up for. Often Intake is the only person they talk to face to face. You answer all the questions, give time estimates and get new visitors registered. 🧵

With Lake Ontario changed to Lake America, the common mnemonic for remembering the great lakes (HOMES) doesn't work anymore. With the swapping of O for A, I propose a new mnemonic: SHAME

obviously i think AI is an abomination. i have talked about this for a long time and will continue to do so, but today i was struck with something REALLY COOL that i do not think is discussed enough on the opposite end: the JOY and FULFILLMENT of being able to hire and work with human artists.

I hate stories like this and many reactions to it. The researchers had a model basically brute force 700k configs of a virus, of which they hand selected several hundred to be manufactured in a lab. It's not like they prompted "make me a virus." It's not nothing but the headline framing is overblown

The New York Times@nytimes.com

Breaking News: Scientists have used A.I. to create new viruses for the first time, raising hopes for medical advances while also raising the possibility that the technology could someday be used to invent dangerous pathogens.

RE: AI Hype In our time people who have no connection with science expect it to produce miracles and nothing but miracles, but they're practically incapable of distinguishing a genuine scientific miracle from a conjuring trick or intellectual acrobatics Monday Starts on Saturday - Strugatsky Bros

I lit up like it was fucking Christmas when I saw @edzitron.com was the guest on Nik Suresh's latest podcast episode. I followed Nik's breakout AI article to his appearance on your pod, which I've found to be very grounding as I work in a tech industry gone mad.

Someone has lost their damn mind and it's not me. In order to pay my son's doctor bill, I have to sign ME up for a MyChart account. Sign up involves Experian asking Q's to verify my identity, which was fine up until this one. What the actual fuck? I have to Google astrology shit to pay a bill?

For any of you in Florida, the nephew of a friend had gone missing. He has schizophrenia and went missing on 5/25. Police found his car abandoned on the road with keys, wallet (with ID), phone, and laptop inside in a suburb of Fort Lauderdale, FL. Would appreciate a repost for visibility

Markwayne: Hey, is this stove hot? Only one way to tell...

David S. Bernstein @dbernstein.bsky.social

New DHS Secy Markwayne Mullin, in an interview with Bret Baier, says he wants to consider pulling Customs out of international airports in “sanctuary cities,” which would effectively shut down a huge amount of international travel to the U.S. LA, NYC, BOS, SF, Chi, SEA, Miami, DEN, Phil, SD….

Fuck this CEO for throwing his team repeatedly under the bus without taking any responsibility for the project trying to achieve goals he set as a leader. Amazing interview, though.

Here’s my interview with Shishir Mehotra, the CEO behind Grammarly’s “expert review” feature which attributed writing advice to people - including me lol - without permission. Or, as you will hear us talk about a lot, compensation. www.theverge.com/podcast/8987...

I saw some furry droppings on a hiking trail and did a search for "fox scat." DO NOT search for fox scat with safe search off if you are trying to identify animal poop. Been a while since the internet caught me that off guard

Several years ago, I worked my first food pantry in the parking lot of Temple Israel in West Bloomfield. The volunteers were kind and motivated, and the clients were diverse with a large contingent of Ukranians. Horrified by the attack on their congregation but relieved that it was stopped quickly
