When they tell us "there is no alternative," what they mean is "stop trying to think of alternatives." To imagine radically is to move beyond the helplessness of prediction: a radical imagination dares to insist that history is what we make, not what happens to us.

Sf can imagine a world that debuts "AI" as a supercomputing project of the IPCC and Sandia Labs whose primary purpose is to improve the fidelity of climate models, and whose spinoffs are modest but interesting open source tools that people run on regular computers with normal energy footprints.

If some broadly useful statistical tools are delivered in the most climate-destroying, economy-wrecking, job-killing, quality-vaporizing way possible, that's just How It Is. It's not Sam Altman or Dario Amodei's fault: there is no alternative.

A reminder, because it is almost that time of year: More children are killed by cars on Halloween than any other day of the year, by far. www.vox.com/future-perfe... If you're a parent, I hope you'll do what you can to keep kids safe. If you're driving on Saturday, PLEASE exercise extra caution.

I heard somebody say that lot of the outlandish stuff that Sam Altman and Dario Amodei and other AI leaders say publicly is really just meant for an audience of Silicon Valley people. But the rest of us can hear it too, and we're reacting differently because we're not part of the tech echo chamber.

I really appreciate Max’s forthrightness in calling out how unnecessary and even inappropriate the approach journalists have taken to covering the referendum is. News media had a story they wanted to tell and they kept looking for a way to make it real.

Question. If all the oil in Alberta belongs to Alberta, don't all the critical minerals belongs to the provinces? Follow up question. If the minerals belong to provinces, why are you selling them without any consultation with those provinces? Are you planning on seizing control over them?

This needs to be done respectfully with the indigenous populations and with long term environmental impacts at the forefront to mitigate the negative impacts. These natural resources belong to all Canadians and we should see a financial reward not just large corporations

1 billion of our tax dollars to build one road, for one industry, in one province. What will be the benefits and pension plans for these jobs? What will be the pay? What impact will it have on First Nations? Will the country recoup that money by taxing the mining corporations and their CEO's?

Anyone who depends on prediction markets to make decisions is a fool. My personal opinion is that these markets should be outlawed. They don't predict anything. They just increase the incidence of gambling.
