Here's an idea for editors, let's do a little roleplay. Writer: "I have a contrarian take!" Editor: "Is it fucking stupid?" Writer: "Well yes, but it bucks the consensus. No one else is saying it." Editor: "Is that because the consensus is correct?" Writer: "... yes but... " <hang up>

Amnesty's capitulation is unacceptable, because a human rights NGO is not simply a discount think tank (viz. a double discounted research university). It's part of its job description to specifically leverage its resources to stand its ground against actual and threatened SLAPPs from bad actors!

A theoretical framework for belief propagation in tensor networks introduces an innovation called a cluster expansion based on statistical mechanics, allowing it to overcome longstanding limitations on accurate approximation. Read more in PRX Quantum: https://go.aps.org/4gvmeI6

Beware of first-hand ideas! First-hand ideas do not really exist. They are but the physical impressions produced by love and fear, and on this gross foundation who could erect a philosophy?

This post is unavailable.

Let your ideas be second-hand, and if possible tenth-hand, for then they will be far removed from that disturbing element — direct observation

Yes. Or even to get orgs to cross-post to bsky etc in addition (which my understanding is something that professional social media tools like hootsuite etc make easy anyway). Eg @apsphysics.bsky.social has an account but doesn't post here.

There really isn't even a coordinated effort to exert a pull on Twitter users to leave among gettable allies. Getting liberal friendly-organizations not to communicate through Twitter is pulling teeth.

I have similar feelings about countries and Straussian noble lies.

I forget who said it, but it's been noted that while "Don't Be Evil" and "Democracy Dies in Darkness" are kinda corny as corporate mottoes, is invariably a *very bad sign* when companies abandon them.

One item of reverse culture shock for me returning to UK is @beijingpalmer.bsky.social observation on British meals. Today at the work cafe I went with the “lighter” option of lamb tagine wrap & soup, since usual fare is quite hearty typically with either a pound of mash or a full plate of chips.

This post is unavailable.

The fact that it’s 50% chips didn’t warrant mentioning on the menu: that’s implicit didn’t need to be stated… Zero points if you can correctly guess what today’s soup was

It was delicious (of course) but I have work to do and can’t be taking a post-lunch nap like this. Need to recalibrate my metabolism back to British mode

This is the sort of statement that was expected from every university president and law firm partner over the last year. That those statements weren’t made played a huge part in where we are now and people will remember.

@zohrankmamdani.bsky.social, could you please establish an official NYC Mayor account on Bluesky and post everything your office is currently posting on X over here? And please remove all city accounts from X, which has become a CSAM creation and distribution site? No money for Musk, ever, please.

Lev S Bishop reposted

There is, to my mind, no justification for the continued use by the UK Government of X as a platform for official comms. There hasn't been for some time, in fact, but if the latest developments around AI-generated image abuse and CSAM don't change the policy I really don't know what will.

The point of accumulating political power ought to be to do what’s right. Otherwise you’re just hoarding power for its own sake. Stopping the government from sending innocent people to a foreign prison where they were beaten, sexually assaulted, and tortured was the right thing to do.

This is why Costco is so great. You know it’s safe to buy if they are selling it then it’s at a sweet spot of quality and value-for-money that will work for everyone who isn’t already an enthusiast for that category (and you know if that applies to you). No need to overthink.

there's a certain personality that's very debilitating in modern life. 100 years ago, if you wanted to buy something, you'd go to five local shops and decide. now with the internet, you need to spend 1,000 hours so you can own the best version in the world like you're some venetian patrician

They're remastering me in the quote reposts, my aesthetics aren't representative of the original artistic intent and the gameplay is slightly off.

Even though this is really bad, it’s still better than The Sentence because 1) there is actual meaning being communicated; 2) you can mostly read it in a straight line without having to backtrack to understand it.

were largely unremarkable save for the moment when a small cohort of unfamiliar young men (whose disruptive comportment escalated, through a series of provocations, into direct confrontation) initiated a conflict that, while statistically banal in neighborhoods of similar demographic composition,

nonetheless culminated in a physical altercation of sufficient intensity to prompt my mother—acting from a rational calculus of protective concern and long-term opportunity maximization—to conclude that my continued residence in said environment was incompatible with her aspirations for my safety

Monarez is playing her weak hand perfectly, and should be a model for institutional resistance for the next four years: 1. Make them fire you 2. Don’t go along to get along 3. Don’t apologize, have confidence in your own integrity and the importance of your role 4. Always escalate the conflict
