Low clouds cool and high clouds warm. All clouds reflect some sunlight. But high clouds have cold cloud tops, so they absorb relatively warm thermal radiation coming up from below but re-radiate at the cold temperatures of their cloud tops, making them net thermal absorbers. contrails.org

Underground power cables are much more expensive than pylons, but the sheer scale of the trench also has environmental costs. The cable corridor for an 400 kV underground cable is 33 m wide, about the width of a 3-lane motorway. 👇 ⸻ Ref: Electricity System Operator www.neso.energy/document/304...

"I suspect you – and a lot of people who like the idea of underground electricity cables – don’t quite know what’s involved with installing them. The view might be nicer a few decades after they’re laid, but installing them is quite the process."

15/ From a system cost perspective, if turn up costs are assigned to the curtailed generation, Scotland's total turn down + turn up costs in 2025 were £43.97/MWh, but total turn down + turn up costs were just £0.61/MWh for England and Wales. ⸻

14/ Looking at curtailment costs relative to wind generation, turn down costs in 2025 came to £11.15 per MWh of wind generated in Scotland, but only £0.39/MWh for England and Wales combined. ⸻

1/ Phase 1 of Dogger Bank A offshore wind farm (302 MW, Target Commissioning Date 1st September, 2023) has missed its CfD long stop date of 30th November 2026, which has been extended to 31st July 2027. It's running almost four years behind schedule. ⸻ Ref: ReNews www.renews.biz/offshore-win... ⸻

2/ Dogger Bank A Phase 1 has a CfD from Allocation Round 3, at a strike price of £55.25/MWh (2024 prices), so it has one of the lowest priced CfDs for offshore wind, before CfD strike prices started rising again in AR6. ⸻

11/ Scotland has received 28% of the wind capacity that has been awarded CfDs (weighted by capacity factor, and including Remote Island Wind), although it consumes only 9% of Great Britain's electricity. Most of that wind capacity hasn't been built yet. ⸻

10/ As luck would have it, Robin Hawkes has just posted a map showing turn-down and turn-up over the last week. Turn-down 🟡 was almost all in Scotland, north of the B6 transmission system boundary (which is shown on the map), turn-up 🟢 (mostly gas) was almost all in England and Wales. ⸻

Robin Hawkes@robhawkes.bsky.social

Here are the curtailment and turn-up actions over the past week… This is a cumulative view of 🟡 curtailed energy on the transmission network, as well as the 🟢 energy turned up. This includes both transmission constraints as well as actions due to regular balancing of demand.

7/ The UK is planning to introduce Reformed National Pricing in the 2030s, which includes a Strategic Spatial Energy Plan (SSEP) to jointly optimise generation, storage and network build. It will divide the UK into 19 land zones and 19 marine zones. (see map)👇 ⸻ Ref: www.gov.uk/government/p... ⸻

Well, I suppose this is the new normal for the foreseeable… Yesterday we spent over £32 million on gas to replace wind energy that we couldn't get to the right place.

1/ The fight over the EU's Emissions Trading System splits on emissions. Finland, Sweden and Denmark, with very low electricity emissions, are trying to save it. Germany and Italy, with extremely high emissions, are pushing to weaken it. ⸻ Ref: Ember ember-energy.org/data/electri... ⸻

Finland, Denmark and Sweden plead for the Emissions Trading System (ETS) to be saved as it comes under increasing attack.

2/ Germany's earlier position: ⸻

The EU's carbon pricing mechanism, the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS), is coming under attack by the EU's big carbon emitters:  ❝ Notably, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz positioned himself in favor of far-reaching reforms, though he backtracked somewhat later.❞

It was clear from the start what this Trump administration's positions on Ukraine and on Russia were going to be. Many people in Europe didn't accept that - because they wanted it to be otherwise, or because they were persuaded by Europe-whisperers like Lindsey Graham that it would all be okay.

Here's how grid-scale batteries and pumped hydro charged over the past week… It's interesting to see the patterns throughout the week. There's a lot of background activity as well as periodic moments where the entire fleet appears to store energy at the same time.

Here's the cumulative volume of curtailment and turn-up actions over the past week… We had a particularly heavy period of transmission constraint throughout September, both in terms of energy volume as well as cost. Why? ⬇️

I often see people claim that because clean energy sources like solar, wind, or nuclear are manufactured using fossil fuels their emissions are high. But thats absolutely not the case: even accounting for full lifecycle emissions they are vastly better than burning coal or gas:

We're pushing 1,500 MW today from the under-construction cluster of wind farms in the North Sea, and they're mostly capped at ~50% capacity for now When complete these three will be outputting at 3,800 MW on a windy day

Beef production has been the largest driver of deforestation this century. Over the last two decades, around 128 million hectares of forest have been cleared to make way for agriculture and forest plantations. That’s an area five times the size of the United Kingdom.
