Ooh controversial! Resurrection is a lot of fun, though, I agree. Mine: 1) Aliens 2) Alien 3) Resurrection 4) Romulus 5) Alien 3 6) Covenant 7) AVP 8) Prometheus I haven’t seen AVP: Requiem yet 😓

Brandon Sheffield@brandon.insertcredit.com

Because people aren't riled up enough lately (lol), here are is my list of favorite movies in the Alien franchise, in order: 1) Alien 2) Alien Resurrection 3) Alien 3 4) Aliens 5) Alien: Romulus 6) AVP 7) AVP: Requiem 8) Alien: Covenant 9) Prometheus

4, 5, and 6 are pretty close together, and Prometheus is not even close to the next-highest (most of the people in that movie are just so *stupid*!)

Woodworking has been a great way to get some quiet (well, “quiet”) time to myself My dovetails are terrible, but getting a little better each time

wrote about "Black October," the PHP vulnerability, and the AI-fueled dread and panic I'm seeing among almost all of the cybersecurity experts I've ever known. I think people w/ LLMs are brute forcing software the same way they brute forced social media w/ slop www.404media.co/php2shell-bl...

404media.coAI Is Changing Everything About Hacking. No One Knows What Happens Next'Black October:' The PHP vulnerabilities and a series of other hacks and bugs have cybersecurity experts freaking out and unsure what happens next.

I left my tech job a bit less than three months ago and I finally feel ready to start working on code seriously again The proliferation and enthusiastic embrace of AI in tech made going back to code feel… pointless, really. But I still care despite that, even if I don’t get another tech job

For me personally, AI use largely targets the things I enjoy about coding: thinking through structure and crafting the best code I can To be clear it doesn’t *need* to be used this way, but in my direct work experience it almost always has been, at least in how I’ve perceived it

I don’t think anyone thinks AI is producing world class code right now, and I’m very interested in finding out what kind of coding work actually benefits from skillful human craft (I actually suspect much more of it does than generally thought but not in the way most devs work)

I'm writing a mod in C# and it's reporting a warning on line 3 of a file but the warning is blank for some reason so the "problems" overview just looks like this

When Grammy-winning musician Rhiannon Giddens begins playing “Old Corn Liquor,” a traditional Black American folk tune, acclaimed Chinese pipa virtuoso Wu Man recognizes similarities to Chinese pentatonic music and spontaneously joins in. The joy on their faces says it all.

I know I'm a broken record on this, but one part of what is going on is that people have literally no idea what the US immigration system actually is; effectively, that there are no pathways into the country legally for someone who wants to wait in line.

Greg Sargent@gregsargent.bsky.social

New Marist poll of Texas finds 61% say undocumented immigrants should stay in US if meet certain requirements. Only 35% say they should leave. A majority of noncollege white men (Trump base) says stay. Supports my case (see piece/thread below) that Trump opened way for new pro-immigrant consensus

will try to answer these in a piece next week but for now i will say that part of the *point* of court expansion, in my mind, is to create a disequilibrium — a potential race to the bottom — that will force a truce.

Steve Vladeck@stevevladeck.bsky.social

Calls for expanding #SCOTUS are entirely (and increasingly) understandable. But as today's "One First" explains, there are at least four difficult questions that those who support expansion should have to answer—especially as compared to other possible reforms: www.stevevladeck.com/p/bonus-257-...

I think I cracked the home oven pizza code! …the answer was “cook at 500 degrees and use the pizza stone correctly”

Rep. Delia C. Ramirez has introduced a bill that would abolish not just ICE, but the DHS altogether, repealing the 2002 law establishing the agency and replacing it with one focused on protecting civil and human rights.

Love that my gumbo is at a point my friends from Louisiana get excited when i make a batch for them 😁

Gonna try to do some actual joinery for my woodworking project this weekend. Looking forward to/a bit anxious about how it goes.

After many trials and tribulations i have finally learned how to make a wooden board flat and square with a hand plane

It was surprisingly difficult for me! Didn’t help that the thin metal workbench I’m using is very much not flat 😅

one thing you learn from making a lot of things is that the nitty gritty details, the millions of tiny invisible decisions, ARE the art. The "higher level ideas" are not nearly as important or interesting

Freya Holmér@freya.bsky.social

"AI lets you focus on the higher level ideas!!" because we all grew up dreaming of becoming managers and CEOs we all know the real artists at the very highest level are the shareholders, famously full of amazing ideas

i like the idea of will smith being an apex predator for chris rock and only chris rock, like he is the metroid to an x parasite

Yeah. Issues are often complicated, but in ways that have nothing to do with the actual political arguments

As a card-carrying sayer of "it's more complicated than that", sometimes it's not!!!!

realizing i never posted it here….but too long have we been limited by the 2-dimensional political alignment chart. i think by using my new tool we can truly map another person's politics. here it is: The Ideology Cube

So apropos of nothing in particular, let’s talk about media tie-in novel pay vs. original work pay, shall we? Let’s say you write a novel. It’s set in your own world, your own characters, and titled The Original. You get a book deal! Look at you go!

Decades and decades of a national policy and zeitgeist that amounts to 'nobody needs to care about social studies' and we're now in an unwinnable war with a foreign country whose culture and leadership we did not understand based around geography we ignored. 🤷‍♂️

Been considering starting to teach and drill my 5th graders on basic map locations, even though nobody gives a shit about social studies.
