... mutually exclsusive? There is a name for being genuinely worried that foreign, dark-skinned people are dangerous. In fact, all phobias are genuinely felt. It's part of the challenge. But "genuine" does not equal "legitimate". And it just does not seem a great strategy for a state broadcaster...

i fear this is largely true & answers a question the left has long had—what even is the point of liberalism? after all isn't 'center-left' or 'establishment-left' kinda a contradiction in terms? & i get the sentiment, by my god you feel it when it's gone
Britain has basically no liberals of note now, and liberalism is functionally dead. The right of the state to stomp all over opponents and minority groups is locked in and it’s been done without significant complaint from anyone except the left, who got stomped all over for trying to resist it.

1) It's not clear leadership contests actually do the things claimed for them. Johnson, Truss & Starmer all won leadership elections, & Sunak fought one. This did not expose their weaknesses, bolster their authority or test their ideas. But it did see them making big promises they later dropped.

Listening to a @theresthistory.bsky.social episode where the presenters suggest that Belgium and (checks notes) Italy are “made up countries” as opposed to England and (checks notes again) the United States. So it’s time for this:

Most importantly: as a cis woman; a feminist; a historian - this will *never* be in my name. Then: an equalities body that chooses to exclude a specific group; chooses to limit human rights of one community - it is an equalities body that has already dismantled itself and any legitimacy with it.

This in my view is the crux of why Starmer has generated so much public anger in the last 18 months. His basic promise to the public was a well-managed government that would enable people to worry less about politics and just get on with life. Yet everything and everyone is still as stuck as ever.
I've said this before, but my main reason for voting Labour in 2024, even though I would have said all of the above when I read the manifesto, was a belief they took governing seriously. That faced with difficult choices, they might make them. They have failed.

my first piece for the Inquirer was a welcome respite from The Dark Times. read about the iconic Barb and then come to the Bearded Ladies’ Bling-Along tonight to take home some of her jewelry
Trying to clean out her mother-in-law Barb's house, Lisa Weinberger encountered 'layers and layers and layers of boxes of jewelry.' There was only one thing she could do: call a drag queen.
