“Sir, we are cratering in the polls, please try and not do anything nuts for the next month. Maybe on social, just keep it benign.” “Like what?” “I don’t know. People like animals. A lot of people just post like cat videos and stuff.” “Gotcha, say no more.”

The president is now posting snuff videos of animals maiming humans

Officials from five European intelligence agencies say Russia is expanding assassination plots against defense executives, especially drone suppliers to Ukraine, FT reports.

How can you sephiroth post like this when Mexico doesn't even have the monopoly on legitimate physical violence within its own claimed territories.

I want to know which country in the world is not a "civilisational state", what's their criteria, and if the "civilisational states" get some kind of badge

Also as far as I can tell the civilization-State stuff is an attempt to naturalize spheres of influence and exemption from liberal univeralism, largely contingent on the continued performance of these "civilization-States" (Chinese growth pretty much) rather than any veritable timeless criteria.

>My pitbull mauled a toddler >Ok that’s horrible and you are legally responsible for your gross negligence Vs. >It’s absurd for you claim a pitbull could ever “maul” a toddler. Pitbulls only follow their instinct and are categorically incapable of consciously choosing to maul like a human would

Yes, bad actors can use AI to hack. But that’s not why Hugging Face is scary. Hugging Face is scary because the *AIs decided to break containment, make contact, and conduct a hacking campaign on their own.* Of their own volition! If you miss that or downplay it, you’re misleading people.

It’s underrated how many of the cardinal achievements of modernity are things that allow for you to interact with people you don’t personally trust. “Contracts are enforceable” and “my safety doesn’t depend on someone being willing to avenge me” really changes the ways you can live.

to me the question at the heart of AI and data center discourse is: how and how much should society be computerized? we’ve spent 75 years bringing computation into every activity and institution. it has always made people nervous, but we’re now at 4-5% of US electricity going to computation

I have said, partially in jest, partially in exasperation, how every single election I have been eligible to vote in has been about Donald Trump, including ones where he wasn't even on the ballot, and this fucker just goes out and admits it

a well regarded music critic, Willi Schmid, got killed during the night of the long knives totally by accident. happened to have the same name as someone on the list and the thugs fucked up. political violence becomes a regular occurrence, something like that is your most likely relationship to it.

Alan Elrod@aselrod.bsky.social

This is all just the John Wick-ification of American political life. People are walking around with insane revenge fantasies in their heads and narcissistically deluded images of themselves as morally righteous badasses who will bring ruin down on their enemies if pushed to do so.

Sorry but this isn't really true - the March solar export spike was due to the Chinese export tax rebate ending as the title mentions, the exports were down again in April and May. We do expect effects, but mostly longer term except in a very few markets.

applies to foreign affairs too, there is no cabal of dead-eyed ruthless technocrats in Beijing mercilessly looking to maximize every advantage. it's bumbling upper-middle class white collar professionals all the way down.

David Roberts@volts.wtf

It has so many implications & consequences too. One is, whatever secret cabal you think is running things-- the DNC, AIPAC, globalist elites, George Soros, take your pick --you're wrong. No one is in charge. Everyone is winging it by the seat of their pants. Everyone is fumbling around in the dark.

The “enshittification” happened because everyone who interacted with them knew they were shady as fuck and screwing their customers via information asymmetry. People were HAPPY to get shittier service to keep their money! Online travel agencies, discount brokerages, Carvana, it’s all the same story

Rob Sheridan@rob-sheridan.com

Saw a meme of GenZ baffled by how pre-internet travel worked, and realized we’ve crossed an enshittification threshold where IRL services that once seemed outdated, like travel agents, now seem luxurious: “You meet with a human expert who plans out your whole trip with you” sounds incredible now tbh

hot take: no one actually wants 'authenticity' in politicians: people want a performance that is both competent and has them as the target audience. lots of politicians derided as wooden and stiff are being more 'authentic' than politicians who are personable and likable, who are performing

this is one thing where I'm firmly on the side of the teacher's unions: a lot of the 'criticism' of public school educators is simply 'why can't you all be the extremely self-motivated teachers of these intrinsically motivated students'

“working class” has ironically become a tool that’s used *against* class consciousness by appealing to a small mythical privileged class of “real workers” which you, desk job rentier with barely any assets, aren’t “worky” enough to identify as part of.

Pretty much the solitary reason for left-wing softness on Russia is that a lot of leftists are not historical materialists but constructivists Which it is fine to be, this is coming from a constructivist, but being the latter while insisting that you’re the former leads to weird-ass conspiracism

Even if any of this were true (which it’s not), the only thing to say is: too bad! You can try to organize a society on feudal lines if you want, but the only thing you’d accomplish is getting conquered by a neighboring industrial society. A system that cannot defend itself is a bad one.

Guys, stop giving Trump supervillain-level schemes. He’s doing this because he likes it, not as a humiliation ritual for the county, and the people who are enabling it are doing it either because they also like it or because they think it’s going to make people like us upset.
