Some news to share: After 25 years, today was my final day at the N&O. I moved to Chicago in October, but I was commuting and working remotely until the paper ended that agreement as of today. I knew when we moved the end was near. That was my choice. It was time. I just wish it wasn’t so abrupt.

Give the man credit for having alligator blood and making it another decade. The 2021 Holiday Bowl Champions* would have made a retroactive 24-team CFP field, for what it’s worth.

We used to chant “Rollie killed the Big 5” at Villanova but he was a pacifist compared to Kevin Willard.

The Philadelphia Big Five died (again). And it sucks. And I'm sorry if you can relate. A column from home ... www.nytimes.com/athletic/771...

I guess when I’ve written “if you keep taking away the things that made people watch in the first place, people will eventually stop watching” the Big 5 has always been in the back of my mind, because I feel it very acutely right now.

CFP adding playoff berths like NASCAR built megaspeedways in every town outside the south with a decent airport in the 2000s — before eventually realizing places like North Wilkesboro make the sport work, not tracks in exurban Phoenix or wherever that looked and raced exactly like every other track.

Bluesky posters of A Certain Age can also recite entire Dr. Katz episodes. The one with Tom Agna and Ray Romano (wherein Ben thinks he has ESP) is a personal favorite.

If I owned a football team I’d absolutely be on the headset, geeking out to 14-word play calls and listening to the DB coach panic when the secondary doesn’t adjust correctly to a late shift. Get something for your millions*. *inheritance, whatever

we had our occasional differences when I covered him (as any coach and beat writer should), but I always had a ton of respect for Jeff Capel. good to see a coach out there talking like this

Incredible moment in NCAA history: A circuit judge in Florida actually referenced CALVINBALL in order to make a piercing point about the NCAA's case—while ruling in favor of Gators men's basketball player Denzel Aberdeen. The fifth-year player is suing for one more season and currently eligible.

UNC might have hired the wrong coach, but by investing more in football, North Carolina is increasingly well positioned to thrive in the next round of TV-driven realignment — if there is one. For @theassemblync.bsky.social www.theassemblync.com/news/culture...

VT’s jerseys actually look a little empty without a sponsor patch. As with college athletes doing radio ads, it appears the world has continued to turn.

This has Hurricanes written all over it.

ESPN remembers college basketball analyst Chris Spatola, who passed away unexpectedly Monday

Love this. Of course he should be in. Of course a few people have kept him out. Of course people who deserve to get in should get in while the people they want to thank are still alive. Of course he’ll get in someday. Of course it takes nothing away from his career as coach and player.

The White Sox waited four hours for the rain to clear and it's as bad now as it was during the delay. The Tigers went through the top of the first on seven pitches. This feels like a reenactment of the last chapters of the Iowa Baseball Confederacy. The Black Angel will be a defensive sub in RF.

Ohio State’s self-sabotaging goal-line stand was like a hockey team on a power play when the other team takes another penalty and refuses to turn over the puck to get the five-on-three. But worse somehow.
