A Trump supporter since he was 11. That's like me in the 70s thinking Starsky and Hutch were real cops.

The Washington Post@washingtonpost.com

Michael Fusella supported President Trump for nearly a decade. But as the Iran war drags on and the cost of living continues to climb, the 21-year-old Republican said he feels betrayed by a president who said he’d end overseas conflicts and lower prices.

"Necessary Needs of a Data Center" will one day be a lovely title for something, possibly a disquisition on what a lot of vapid nonsense it is compared to the real needs of actual people.

I can play tunes by tapping my fingers on my jawbone. The Lone Ranger is how it all began...

Quote this with something you can do that is funny or impressive, but absolutely useless. I do a really good imitation of a pigeon.

Betty Gilpin was wildly impressive in Mrs Davis. A show that was vastly enjoyable even if, by the end, I'd have had a very hard time telling anyone precisely what it was about.

The New Yorker@newyorker.com

On the heels of her Emmy win for “Widow’s Bay,” Betty Gilpin reflects on growing up with actor parents, taking on Cole Escola’s role in “Oh, Mary!,” and the importance of performing with your whole heart. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...

Absolutely golden O'Toole. Massive pleasure to watch. Great film too.

- This is for ladies only! - So is *this*, ma’am, but every now and then I have to run a little water through it. MY FAVORITE YEAR (1982) The late PETER O’TOOLE with an Oscar nom’d performance as an Errol Flynn-style former movie star. Released 44yrs ago today.

Not too mind-boggling that nobody wants to visit a big Fascist outpost lurking at the western side of the Atlantic. Look what the crappy criminal-in-chief has made.

Semafor@semafor.com

Visitors to the US are on track to drop by almost two million year-on-year. “We’re the only major country in the world losing visitation,” the head of the US Travel Association said. “It’s mind-boggling.” www.semafor.com/article/09/2...

Another simple translation. He's an asshole.

Hegseth: "It's worth saying again so the fake news understands it. We are no longer the woke department or the weak department. Simple translation of that -- no fatties no trannies no beardos no weirdos no wimps no radicals. Just warriors."

There are plenty of drooling rightwing wazzocks who might learn something quite important from this, as well they damn should. Then again, maybe they wouldn't because they're wazzocks.

The French made a short film about what could happen after all immigrants would follow the ‘white, angry old man’s’ advice to go back where they came from.

I'd definitely have put Pose on there. And maybe Boston Legal too. But nice to see Better Things on the list.

It was one of the great joys of my recent life to know Bonnie Greer. A truly remarkable person who radiated such wisdom and intellect. And when she spoke the audience was rapt. A kind, generous, passionate and very funny human. Thank you for giving us you Bonnie. www.theguardian.com/books/2026/s...

I can relate. Was in Whitby for the first time in June. Lovely place, with just the right amount of quirk, which is always a good thing.

Simon Knott@simonknott.bsky.social

Whitby. I liked it. Cheerful, busy, boisterous. People having a good time, and then there's that haunting ruin on the headland, not even English Heritage can neuter that. And pleasingly remote, it takes three hours to get here by train from Sunderland, you can get to London in less time than that.

There's no way a book about the development of European porcelain would be particularly gripping, right? Wrong. Here it is. Turns out the story is absolutely off the chain. It's genuinely nuts and startling, and all true.

I'm the first to admit I'm not the target audience for this frivolous candyfloss espionage, but I still think this is dumb as rocks and only an idiot would want it. If you're recording me saying that, it's still true.

August's best reads. From Mary Rickert and Ben Reeves. Can't split them so choosing both, two very beautifully written and moving books teeming with life, death and more than a little of the otherworldly.

Anyone who gifts books is already extraordinary to me, but obviously Dolly Parton was so much more than that.

Dolly Parton, among a thousand other amazing things she did in her life, gifted over 330 million books to kids through her Imagination Library program. Her passing is a tremendous loss to the world, but you can support the program today to keep it going imaginationlibrary.com

Which reminds me, wonderfully, of the station on the Tokyo train network back in 2005, where the door-opening chime was a very cheerful version of The Third Man theme.

Anon Opin@anonopin.bsky.social

The door-opening chimes on the Circle/District/H&C/Met lines are the first notes in the Hook theme.

Good grief. Glad to know she and her friend are okay.
