Last official meetings and events done as Streatham Wells councillor. An honour to chair my final planning committee; emotional to help my final resident at councillor surgery last Sat; and fittingly my final community meeting tonight - in Wells, for Streatham Business Improvement District Board.

Congratulations to the two awesome Belgian runners who decided to stop after creating a backyard ultra world record. Ivo Steyaert is 56. Merijn Geerts is 52. They have both run over 500 miles / 820km in 5 days. Congratulations also to the winning team: United States.

The Belgian duo has stopped. They completed 124 Yards. 124 hours of running. Ignored 124 chances to quit. A new World Record. 👏

New analysis from @oha-updates.bsky.social shows why it's time to update the rules that determine which foods can be marketed to children so they reflect current nutrition evidence. This is an important part of making the healthy choice the easy choice and protecting future heart health.

Green Party conference just voted in favour of this motion, and this time, in the hall itself, specifically voted against an amendment which would have removed the element about “Zionist Synagogues”. As a result, for most Jews the Green Party will now be considered to have a policy of antisemitism.

Daniel Sugarman@danielsugarman.bsky.social

Although it feels like I am shouting into the void about this sometimes, I want to share some further thoughts on the “Zionism is Racism” motion which the Green Party is due to debate in the next 16 hours. Just to address various points which I think people in general should know. A thread:

The ability to pour hundreds of millions of pounds into a loss-making TV channel, bent on wrenching British politics sharply to the right, is yet another of the ways in which extreme wealth is trying to remake UK democracy. It needs to be part of any serious conversation about political funding.

Streatham High Road is where bus priority is needed. It takes 25 minutes to go the couple of miles to Brixton and is relied upon by everyone. Hope that Lambeth and TfL will review these plans and deliver the promised improvements for bus users on the A23.

Malcolm Clark reposted

The proposals for bus priority on Streatham Common North are fixing the wrong problems in the wrong places. - fewer crossings when we need more - even worse cycling infrastructure - nothing for the bottleneck junction with the A23

Big news. Thank you Andy for firing the starting gun on change. So many have campaigned for PR, some of us for decades! Recognise the scale of challenge ahead to make it happen. But a moment to celebrate the work of Make Votes Count/Matter, Labour Campaign for Electoral Reform, Compass et al.

Make Votes Matter@makevotesmatter.bsky.social

💥BREAKING: Andy Burnham announces a National Commission on Electoral Reform. This is a historic moment. The era of First Past the Post is coming to an end. It's time to transform politics and make all votes count. It's time for Proportional Representation.

Burnham: "We don't let people sell food that damages health" Umm, I don't think many people - or even his own Health Dept - would necessarily agree with spirit of that. 10Yr Health Plan recognises need to change current situation: committing to introduce Healthy Food Standards reporting & targets.

The Conservative party recently announced proposals to change the benefit system so that recipients could not use their welfare payments to buy tobacco. Our new blog explains why the best solution is targeted quit support & access to free alternatives for those on low incomes and benefits. 👇

ash.org.ukIf people on benefits are struggling to quit smoking, then the cost-effective, compassionate solution is cessation support - ASHAction on Smoking and Health (ASH) is a campaigning public health charity that works to eliminate the harm caused by tobacco.

Today is 100 days until the smoke-free generation comes into force on 1st January 2027, and new data from ASH shows that 62% of 11–17-year-olds who have ever smoked say that, if they could go back in time, they would not start smoking. 📆🚭

Whilst vapes are an effective smoking cessation tool for adult smokers, they should not be used by children or young people. Yet, they are being displayed in plain view of children, with bright and colourful packaging.

What I love about Western democracy is you can bung a political party £ 36 million earned from criminal activity & most media will continue to point at asylum seekers & migrant care workers with families as the barbarians at the gate we need to defend ourselves from 🙄.

My party has got this very wrong. Instead of sending members a fundraising request after the two mega £m Reform donations, Labour should be telling me how they are going to legislate or regulate big money (& crypto money) out of politics. We are in government. There is a Bill to tack it. Just do it!

Feels strange bringing in Jewish New Year after solemn afternoon remembering events in US 25 years ago, and those whose lives were lost or affected. A circle of seasons & life moment. The logic of this from the Chief Rabbi seems to be: there is nothing that the Natanyahu Govt could do that would merit sanctions, as it would "feed into" a "hostile discourse" about Israel. And it dangerously conflates all Jews with the actions of Likud. Dire on so many levels.

Nadine Batchelor-Hunt@nadinebh.bsky.social

This is an overtly political statement unbecoming for a chief rabbi that conflates Jews and Israel and does not represent the views of me or people like me I could say more, but it’s almost Rosh Hashanah and I don’t want to start the new year badly - and, frankly, its awfulness speaks for itself
