I have a new home for maltjerry.com. I abandoned WordPress and built a blogging site. At the moment, it's mostly got my old posts since time immemorial (2010-2019), but there is one new one. I'm not finished with the design but I am finished with the procrastination (for now).

It’s 11-13 degrees outside today, depending on where you are in the UK. This is also the recommended serving temperature range for cask ale. So this is my annual invitation to anyone who thinks cask is served “warm” to go outside in your summer clothes and let us know how you get on.

As expected, the Prime Minister's promise to sort out the mess of funding for Jodrell actually meant nothing - it seems the government would like it to be some sort of heritage theme park when you can go and see where we used to do science. 🔭

'The University of Manchester is seeking alternative funding sources to keep scientific work at Jodrell Bank going after hearing that lost UK Research and Innovation funding would not be restored despite interventions by the prime minister.'

Sad news... Larry Schorr - who kindly let me use some of his great pics of Peter Hammill in the book - has died. His Rock Pix gallery is one of *the* great unsung online archives, from Blondie & Beefheart to Yes & Zappa. Take a look here and prepare to lose an hour or two... mypixrock.format.com

Hey folks. In total honesty my tour is NOT selling well. I’ve sold 30 tickets in a 400 seater in Birmingham, and not much more elsewhere. If you like musical comedy, if you like standup, then please come see my show! And spread the word! The Rachel Parris Songbook tour starts in Nov! Link in bio! 🎶

In case you were wondering about what the physics Nobel Prize this year was about...

Alright so what's the deal with neutrinos? And why is discovering high energy versions of them worthy of a Nobel Prize? Let's break it down!

A week tomorrow, I’ll be heading to Wales and reading poems in Monmouth. Shows in Aberystwyth and Cardigan follow shortly after, and then I have a jaunt to Cardiff in November. Hope to see some of you there. Diolch.

Some fantastic Montagu's Harrier news today – six chicks have successfully fledged at a secret location in England! The RSPB's Mark Thomas, who spent his summer monitoring the breeding harriers, will be joining us on Wednesday's episode of The BirdGuides Podcast as well.

No test cricket today 😐 I know it finished early, but I think it was daft to start the first test on a Wednesday. Just so they could fit in a back-to-back one 🙄 #TheCricket

We need more talented cricketers in Iceland. If you can play a bit and have an Icelandic grandparent or fifth cousin, get in touch. If you have even watched some films by Baltasar Kormákur, we will think about it.

Eclipse day! ☀️ Today's total solar eclipse is visible from Greenland, Iceland, northeastern Portugal and Spain. Most of the rest of Europe, northern North America and western Africa will witness a partial solar eclipse. More info: www.esa.int/Science_Expl... #EuropeanSolarEclipse

This Thursday is International IPA Day, apparently, so in true Swedish fashion I will be celebrating today: International IPA* Afton! Afton = Eve, as in: julafton (Christmas Eve), midsommarafton (midsummer's eve), trettondagsafton (Twelfth Night Eve). *pron: "eepa"

This is my soundscape this morning. The trouble is, whenever I play it, I'm taken back to a car journey in the mountains in Norway, on the way to Stryn. The fragile bleak beauty of the music matched the landscape in a way that stopped all conversation. I am similarly distracted today.

Been to the playback of In a Glass House in London. What a lovely evening! The album sounded fab, lovely venue, great to see old friends and Derek thought my question was good 😊

How cool is this!

Tonight's the night! 30 mins of improvised music by myself and percussionist Prathap Ramachandra on Radio 3's Late Junction. Modular synthesis colliding and colluding with Carnatic rhythms, recorded live at BBC Broadcasting House, expertly programmed by Jen Lucy Allan @reducedlistening.bsky.social

In case you can't quite see, that's the week of 17-27 Sept. 😀

Beer Today@beertoday.bsky.social

Dates have been announced for Cask Ale Week, the annual celebration of our national drink, involving around 10,000 pubs, bars, and brewery taps across the country beertoday.co.uk/2026/07/02/c... #beer #beernews #caskale

This is great and exciting. And the voiceover is pitched really nicely. I would still love to hear it with Chris Lintott and Dame Maggie.
