After getting the call, RSPCA animal rescue officers Ben Fitzcosta and Brian Milligan set off for the Botolph’s Bridge area of West Hythe, near West Hide Dam. “We soon spotted the swan who was clearly very sick, he had his head down and was mobile on the water but clearly finding it very difficult to move,” said Fitzcosta. “The area was difficult to access so we had to launch our boat and get onto the water to reach the bird who, frightened, managed to flee onto the bank and tuck himself in the brambles.” Fitzcosta was able to climb ashore, pick up the swan and get him safely in the swan bag and onto the boat. united24media.comWhat Will It Take to End Russia's War? Zelenskyy on What's at Stake in Abu Dhabi TalksA meeting between Ukrainian, American, and Russian representatives in Abu Dhabi could mark the first step toward a ceasefire in Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says. Europe cannot be excluded from the negotiations. The United States would lead the process, given its ability to influence Russian leader Vladimir Putin. Zelenskyy met with Ukrainian journalists to discuss potential negotiations in Abu Dhabi, talks between the leaders of Norway and Finland, as well as the Russian leader, and other issues critical to Ukraine, including the availability of interceptor missiles for Patriot air defense systems, intelligence sharing, and the Starlink/Starshield system. Ukraine-Russia peace talks in Abu Dhabi The meeting in Abu Dhabi depends on the American side, much as the meeting in Brussels did, says Zelenskyy. Ukraine and Russia have both confirmed their readiness to participate, so the course of the process will depend on Washington’s decision. At the same time, Zelenskyy believes that meaningful negotiations cannot take place without Europe. Security guarantees cannot be discussed without Europe. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy He explained his position by outlining several possible formats: The first format involves bilateral US security guarantees for Ukraine, based on an “Article 5-like” system. The second format involves the Coalition of the...

econews.com.auNew research reveals endangered Pacific turtles' critical connection to Australian watersJustine Hausheer/TNC The leatherback turtle Ghase Taigo (“woman who protects and provides care,” locally) as she returns to the ocean after nesting on Haevo in the Solomon Islands. The Nature Conservancy is supporting community efforts in Isabel Province to protect the critically endangered Western Pacific subpopulation of leatherback turtles, the world’s largest species of turtle. The largest leatherback nesting population in Solomon Islands occurs on sandy beaches like Haevo that line Isabel Province. TNC trains and engages community monitors to support these conservation efforts, including training and contracting the first women rangers in Solomon Islands. A new study from The Nature Conservancy (TNC) shows that a community-led conservation effort, supported by TNC, is leading to the recovery of a critically endangered nesting population of Western Pacific Leatherback turtles. Evidence reveals that the decline of one of the world’s most threatened sea turtle populations can be reversed, with the number of leatherback nests at Haevo beach that has been monitored and protected for over a decade, increasing by approximately 10% a year since continuous protection began. Yet the species remains critically threatened, with fewer than 100 nesting turtles expected to remain by 2040 without continued intervention. The study shows that an...

livescience.comRare tiger behaviors captured on camera show 'we really know nothing about them'A male tiger approaches his cubs and greets them with a head-bobbing motion while their mother rests nearby. The surprising interaction, captured in the PBS Nature documentary "Tiger Island," a two-part series that follows two big-cat families across Nepal. The footage marks the first time a tiger "family" has been documented spending time together, and it could challenge conventional assumptions about how the seemingly solitary cats behave around their young, said Dan O'Neill, a wildlife biologist and filmmaker who contributed to "Tiger Island." Previously, it was thought that tiger moms raise their cubs for up to two years without any help from the male tiger. But this may not be the norm. "It just shows that we really know nothing about them," O'Neill told Live Science. "And they're so much more complex than people realize." That's just one of the scenes in Tiger Island that challenges our understanding of the tigers' solitary nature. In another scene, a female tiger cares for another tigress's cubs. "We have these very rigid ideas of how these animals live," O'Neill told Live Science. But the natural world is "diverse and ever-changing," and tigers are no exception, he said. The footage of the female caring...

earth.comRestoring rivers brings back wildlife, but their natural functions may not recoverWhen a stream gets its curves back or loses a dam, the project is usually judged by what lives in the water afterward. More species often do come back. The work that goes on in a healthy stream, such as algae growth and the removal of nitrogen from the water, doesn’t reliably return with them. A new global analysis checked those processes. For most of them, restored streams looked about the same as damaged ones that were never repaired. The finding matters in Europe, where the Nature Restoration Regulation lists those processes as a goal of river restoration. Restoring streams is only half the battle The analysis was led by Ulrike Haase, a doctoral researcher at TU Dresden in Germany. River ecologist Mario Brauns coordinated the study at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ), with scientists from 13 research institutions taking part. The team looked at work that changes a stream’s shape and flow. Researchers call it hydromorphological restoration. “Hydromorphological restoration can improve biological structure, but ecosystem functions do not automatically recover as a result,” Haase said. “Our findings show that improvements in stream structure or biological recovery do not necessarily indicate that ecosystem functions have recovered.” Germany’s streams...

insideclimatenews.orgData Centers, Power Bills, Hurricanes: What's at Stake for the Environment in Florida's Senate RaceWhen asked to choose, Florida’s likely voters have picked protecting the environment over economic growth by more than 2 to 1, a margin that surprised even the pollster who asked the question. In a University of North Florida poll released last week, 61 percent of respondents said state and local officials should prioritize the environment “even at the risk of curbing economic growth.” Twenty-six percent chose growth. Registered Republicans sided with the environment 48 percent to 35 percent, and so did a plurality of 2024 voters who backed Donald Trump. “I expected probably [the] environment to win narrowly, but this was a blowout,” said Sean Freeder, who directs UNF’s Public Opinion Research Lab. Less than two weeks before Election Day, that sentiment has echoed through Florida’s U.S. Senate race between Republican Ashley Moody, the incumbent, and Democrat Angie Nixon, a state representative. Instead of a broad climate debate, it shows up in specific fights over data centers, power bills, hurricane recovery and the fixes either candidate can offer. The race is closer than many expected in a state Trump won by 13 points in 2024. The UNF poll showed Moody, whom Gov. Ron DeSantis appointed in 2025 to serve the...

mprnews.orgGoogle data center vote postponed in Hermantown following two hours of protestsFollowing two hours of nonstop chanting and protests, the Hermantown City Council on Monday night postponed a series of votes on whether to give final local approval to a controversial proposed Google data center just outside Duluth. It’s the latest indication of just how contentious proposed data centers have become in Minnesota and across the nation in advance of the midterm election, as tech giants rush to build the giant computer server farms that are needed to power artificial intelligence. The drama began just before the council meeting was scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. Hundreds of people had crammed into Hermantown’s city hall to attend the special meeting. Most couldn’t squeeze into the small council chambers and instead were routed to a large overflow room. Dozens of people lined up to sign up to speak. But many were still in line when the sign-up ended before the meeting was scheduled to begin. Nearly 100 people began chanting “Let us speak!” outside the council chambers. After a half-hour of nonstop chanting, protesters began shouting “Shut it down!” They sat down on the floor, never stopping the chants. People began distributing water bottles and snacks. After two hours, city leaders announced...
