i firmly believe in rewarding yourself with small, tangible treats (a nice spice mix! a good smelling tea! a comfy throw blanket!) for any achievements including continuing to be alive for another day

If you think kids hate school now, wait until everyone turns to full-time "direct instruction." That should end really well...

The only people who will benefit from Sold A Story Season 2 are Emily Hanford, the handful of DI consultants grifters partnering with AEI, and massive curriculum companies. Not kids. Not teachers. The feeding frenzy for funding has already started.

Here's to the brave editorial board students for the Cornell Daily Mail! 💪🏼 "This is not a dark chapter in Cornell’s history, it’s a morbid pattern....where enough ambiguity, enough he-said-she-said, enough familial connections, enough money will allow you to get off scot-free."

"Cornell has failed to protect its students. Cornell has failed to address the growing issue of sexual assault on campus with its pathetic task force. Cornell has failed the student allegedly raped by those seven men at Chi Phi in October 2024. Cornell has failed her. Cornell has failed us."

I'm teaching first semester Calculus this Fall. Met with the teaching team yesterday. What are we doing in the "age of AI": like others, deweighting all at-home assessments. Still brainstorming additive (as opposed to subtractive) adjustments ...

This is akin to Trump raiding the National Parks Service in order to pay for his Reflecting Pool disaster. (Which he has done). Take something that works remarkably well, and divert resources to cronies to deliver something the public did not ask for.

When you make 1 trillion dollars, you have won the game. They should give you a parade and a gold statue. And then take away all your money and you start New Game+ with tougher enemies.

Russell Vought, Director of the OMB, has issued a set of proposed changes that would dramatically alter federal grant funding. However, we can each take action to prevent these from taking effect. Here's how, a 🧵 🧪 1/n www.science.org/content/arti...

A lot of people are talking about this but not nearly enough are emphasizing that it is a PROPOSAL and that we can and should SUBMIT COMMENT by July 13. Chanda shares deets in this thread.

This is urgent enough to make it and end-of-year writing assignment for high school students to weigh in with official comments and letters to their legislators. It's their future at stake.

tl,dr; Scientists no longer allowed to use federal funding to publish, attend meetings, or talk to the public. They cannot collaborate internationally. Grants can be cancelled for any reason, at any time, political appointees have a final say over what gets funded, and who gets funded.

"The true cost of war shows up long after the fighting stops."

"You can't say the cost of a puppy is $200 because that was the adoption fee." The Pentagon's $25B price tag does exactly that — it ignores veterans' care, disability payments, and decades of interest. The true cost of war shows up long after the fighting stops.

In the midst of packing and moving houses -- to a home that is closer to campus. Say yes to a 5 minute commute and potentially biking once the weather is right. That said, I'm cognitively off due to stress. Not finding my words from time to time. I'll be happy when this move is done.

Remembering today that having your heart broken is a necessary step on the path to becoming fully human. Whichever heartbreak is your first, it’s probably critical that a state break your heart so that you can develop a political imagination. If this is your first, I’m sorry and also welcome.

Friends, I was stuck in Puerto Rico for an extra day due to USA’s military actions in Venezuela. I am against what happened there. It was an act of war without Congressional approval. It was harmful to civilians. My travel situation is pretty annoying, too, but I am safe.

This week is the 🎡 Reassessment Carnival 🎡 in my classes, where students optionally retake any assessment to update me one last time with a demonstration of what they know. It's an exciting and stressful and satisfying week full of celebration for students' accomplishments and also a TON of grading.
