Fixing this is more than planting trees though. Cancel the datacenters. Make them pay for the full remediation of the sites they desecrated. Pay for restoration of the fungi, the understory plant species, the insects and birds and mammals that are required for a healthy ecosystem.

Now, this is something Tolkien would have something to say about. What the fuck are we doing here? I'll summarize books and academic papers for you and answer your relationship questions, no clearcutting required. Make them plant a million new trees. Two million.

Make them pay for the years of follow-up surveys, the experts in the local ecology. Make them learn in detail what they destroyed, make them spend years trying to make up for it, make sure they never forget what they did. Make sure those miserable bean counters never try it again.

When Grammy-winning musician Rhiannon Giddens begins playing “Old Corn Liquor,” a traditional Black American folk tune, acclaimed Chinese pipa virtuoso Wu Man recognizes similarities to Chinese pentatonic music and spontaneously joins in. The joy on their faces says it all.

I'm looking forward to the sequel studies, "Do We Actually Need to Train New Workers to replace Retiring Old Workers? The Answer May Surprise You" and "Shocking Twist: Expert Humans Do A Better Job At Everything Than Our Half-Assed Predictive Text System Ever Could"

Love that some execs are paid hundreds of thousands of dollars a year and yet still need to do studies to determine that teaching people how to do their jobs well makes them better at doing their jobs.

I feel like we don’t talk about millennials in particular, hitting our 40s - in earlier generations many of us would be reaching the peak of our careers, but because of disaster after disaster, locust after locust eating our industries, many of us are on our 3rd or 4th fresh start.

I volunteer to run the website for my local photographic society, which is currently on AWS because that's the hosting we can afford. I was having a great time with Amazon's AI scraper taking down stuff hosted on Amazon's own infrastructure, just A+ service there.

While I was struggling with protecting my mom's site from the bot swarm I kept asking everyone who is still in the industry how small sites who don't have a kid with a computer science degree survive and the answer was pretty much "they don't" and that's so grim

I'm bookmarking this list for a banned books display that isn't just the same ten classics that always get talked about

Maggie Tokuda-Hall@maggietokudahall.bsky.social

Here's the thing: most books that are banned don't make the lists that get circulated each #BannedBooksWeek. If you're a book creator and your book gets banned, please respond to this post with your book and its buy link on bookshop.org. That way we can support indies and banned books 💛

I've never stopped being angry about this tbh

Uterus: Hello child! I have business to conduct inside you, and it’s going to be very disruptive! Child: I’ve been warned. Once a month, right? Uterus: What’s a month? I only know the tides of your hormones! Child: Why do you sound so angry? Uterus: Don’t worry, we’re both going to be angry!

Absolutely disgusting, I don't understand how anyone likes what this sellout has been doing to Canada since he took over as Prime Minister

What you need to understand is nothing we built was “off the shelf.” Store-bought environmental assets for stop-motion features do not exist. We were given concept art and told “make it look like this.” Everything you see here, down to the dirt and moss, was meticulously designed and crafted.

What are you doing with your midlife existential crisis? No wrong answers. Just trying to see something, as the kids say.

I'm at the point where I can't tell if the people at these companies believe this garbage, or if they're trying to get the masses to blame the computers for all of the layoffs and the climate disasters triggered by data centers. "It's the computer's fault we scammed billions out of the economy."

Sure, genAI systems probably are going to be devastating to humanity, because the dipshits pushing them are gunning for total economic and environmental collapse. Their statistical models are not going to launch all the nukes like in the movies, and only complete simpletons believe that.

Carl Quintanilla@carlquintanilla.bsky.social

ANTHROPIC EXEC: “.. I personally think it is >10% within the next decade.”

It's amazing to see the number of people who can't tell fact from fiction regarding genAI. The people building it should be able to tell that a predictive text model isn't intelligent and can't trigger a nuclear apocalypse, but I guess they thought that The Terminator was a documentary.

An LLM isn't on track for mass murder on its own, it isn't on track for super intelligence. It doesn't know the meaning of the words it spits out, you sponge-brained invertebrates! It has statistics about what words appear together and that's it! It's not going to be your sapiosexual girlfriend!

Well, instead of logging everything properly, they got a couple of tree crushers and started rolling over the trees, and then started flooding the reservoir before they got all the machinery out. There's so much dead driftwood in the reservoir that I'm surprised no one saw something like this sooner

I've been messing around with the Open Camera app, because I'm getting tired of the processing garbage that keeps getting shoehorned into the base camera in Android, and it's nice to be able to take sunset photos that don't have the colors autocorrected out of the image

There's Diana Wynne Jones' books, there's Tamora Pierce's YA titles, there's the Akata series by Nnedi Okorafor. ND Stevenson is working on the Scarlet Morning series. If graphic novels are more your thing, there's Amulet, and Lightfall, and the Tea Dragon Society. There's just so many better books

It's baffling that people still like these things. If you want children's magic books read Earthsea. Fuck, read His Dark Materials. People don't want that though, they want to be a stupidly wealthy child.

I cannot even communicate how angry this image makes me. Clearly approved by some incurious dipshit who has never seen food or bugs, why are these fools the ones who get to decide things

I still hold that nerds need to understand that talking to computers in Star Trek was a storytelling device. It was never a design for an interface that would be helpful in most situations for the majority of users.

Okay but I don't want to kill my keyboard, the way my creative brain works when I type is different from how it works when I talk, and the latter is how I write novels. Also the last thing we need in the world is more people muttering to themselves in public spaces. youtu.be/DnCOwUq67SU

There is a certain level of obtuseness in (some) "AI" apologists when they flounce up to point out what "AI" is good for in science, etc, while eliding the fact that almost none of that use is driving the current market capitalization, environmental degradation and resource hogging of the field
