There are people out there who not only think we should solve music, but think that they have solved music, and we have put these people in charge of our entire world.

For nearly 14 years, you’ve been adding location info to your Uses. We’ve always wanted a visual way to see this data. Rob Meek built it for us. Introducing the Fonts In Use Map: fontsinuse.com/map

Folks who live on the East Coast of the US or in Europe and have a hard time remembering that not everyone is on their time zone are the new flat-earthers. We live on a BALL folks. It rotates around the SUN. When it's light out for you, it's dark somewhere else.

More watch parties for everything!

Derek Young@derekmyoung.bsky.social

Doyle’s, a pub by my building, does World Cup watch parties with a huge TV in what's usually their parking lot between buildings. Apparently, a woman asked if they could show Love Island and the owner agreed. So I just walked by and a couple hundred people are watching this show like a sport.

Feels like a lot of STEM guys believed coding was the hardest thing a human could do, and assumed that once somebody invented an AI that can code, it would follow naturally that the AI can do all of the lesser non-coding things that other dumber people were doing

Pictured below are some mid-century examples of àdìrẹ eleko (starch-resist), àdìrẹ alabere (stitch-resist), àdìrẹ oniko (tying raffia around the cloth, sometimes with small seeds or stones to create a pattern), and even hand painted cloth. The last really turns cloth into art.

Take away the bubble and we'd call the things AI can do "plug-ins." Some would use them, and others wouldn't, and some uses would be productive, and others would be foolish, but we wouldn't bet the economy on them, nor squander our last dribbles of potable water to cool their data centers. 23/

This manuscript by Anselmus Faust, dated 1612, is the oldest surviving European manual on bookbinding. Written in Latin & Dutch, it was created for the St Bernard's Abbey near Antwerp. What makes it especially unique is its rare dos à dos binding: 2 books bound back-to-back, sharing a single spine.

In our hypervisualized world of ubiquitous networked cameras, we expect to immediately see perfect images of whatever is happening. #AIslop delivers. Regardless of the existence of actual footage, the AI versions are often more dramatic, cinematic and optimized for social media clickbait 2/

As far as I know there is literally no reason for this, it is just an incredibly lucky coincidence that we get to enjoy for free

something that wrinkles my brain every time I remember it is the fact that total eclipses are only possible on earth because the moon and sun appear to be the same size in our sky, due to the insanely, astronomically unlikely fluke that the moon is 400x smaller than the sun but 400x closer to us.
