Jackdaw has been approved. Rosebank must not follow. Rosebank won’t bring down energy bills or tackle the climate crisis. Its oil is largely destined for export, while the damage from burning it will be felt around the world. 1/2

As the cost-of-living crisis pushes households to the brink and climate breakdown places further stress on public services, only the Green Party are pushing for genuine action at the Budget this week.

If 33,000 died as a consequence of a terrorist attack, there would be mass mobilisation of society. When COVID killed people, we took society-wide action. Why do lives lost to climate catastrophe not deserve a coordinated society response and action to prevent further loss of life?

On 21 October the government approved gas production at the Jackdaw field. As health professionals, we regard this as a matter of patient safety. Jackdaw is a health decision, not only an energy decision. Our position statement 🧵

We need to be way angrier than we are. I'm all for adopting the framing from the End Times Fascism book, namely that these people - the techbros - are traitors to the human race.

In my view this is the most serious consequence of the Jackdaw decision. As for the future, this is a point that needs to be hammered home - "if Rosebank is approved, the UK will be providing a blueprint that any fossil fuel producer – established or prospective – can follow."

Jackdaw decision could haunt the UK at future climate summits We rightly question people who preach climate responsibility but refuse to practise it. Why should governments be judged differently? theconversation.com/jackdaw-deci...

It's simply not good enough for the First Minister to sit on the fence when it comes to new oil and gas. John Swinney can double down on fossil fuels. Or he can protect our future generations from climate breakdown. But he can’t do both. He must tell the people of Scotland where he stands.

mary4future.bsky.social reposted

Business flights within the UK are literally fuelling climate breakdown. The Scottish Greens would tax those super-wealthy frequent flyers to fund a millennial railcard for those who currently cannot access discounts on rail travel to make public transport cheaper for everyone.

Muslims and immigrants, despite all the lies we're told about them, have never presented a systemic threat to Western security, let alone to "Western civilisation". Instead, the threats come from our governments, especially in the US, and their grim alliances with capital and overseas dictators.

Miatta can clearly see right from wrong but she's rowed into line twice with a Labour government siding with Shell and Donald Trump on climate vandalism, and into line now on cruel immigration reforms. What is the point of Labour if they can't even do the basics to protect people and the planet?

The govt itself has admitted Jackdaw won't bring down energy bills or create many jobs. So I asked the PM: does Labour disagree with the overwhelming scientific consensus that fossil fuels must stay in the ground? Or was lobbying from the oil and gas lobby simply too difficult to ignore?

Chancellor to pitch budget at wealth creators – UK politics live

theguardian.comChancellor to pitch budget at wealth creators – UK politics liveJohn Healey is expected to cut red tape requirements, particularly for smaller businesses Good morning. A week today John Healey, the chancellor, will be doing a media round defending the budget he is presenting on Wednesday next week. Ahead of that, he has given an interview to Patrick Maguire from the Times. As you would expect, there is no real detail in it about the measures he will be presenting to MPs. But the big picture message is very clear – and quite surprising, coming from a chancellor serving a PM who in some respects is steering left compared to his predecessor. Healey says that he wants to be on the side of bloody-minded entrepreneurs who make a profit, he acknowledges that government has made their life harder over the past two years, and he suggests that cutting the ‘cost of living’ for business is just as important as cutting the real cost of living for families. In the quote that gives the Times its splash headline, Healey says: I want to be a chancellor who backs business in Britain making a profit, and those entrepreneurs who, in the end, are the ones who challenge the status quo, come up with innovative ideas and are trying, some of them through sheer bloody-mindedness, to keep going through these sorts of pressures … If you’re not making a profit, you’ve got nothing to put back into the business. And for the people who start up these businesses, the ones who really thrive and grow, they have to make a profit — and they will be much more inclined to put it back into their own business. But we want it to grow here and stay here. If you talk to any of the businesses that have come in and have either had one-to-ones or round tables with me, I have recognised that in recent times there’s been a lot of pressure: employment law, regulation, tax, input costs, supply chains. And so when I talk about the cost of business, and recognising that in the same way as we’re recognising the cost of living pressures, I’m conscious of that as I go into the budget for both businesses and households. [Healey] is expected to use the budget to make significant cuts to regulation on businesses that one senior Treasury source described as “the sludge choking firms”. Reporting requirements are likely to be abolished for many smaller enterprises, The Times understands. Continue reading...

'We're resolute about the need to drive climate action. But that has to be part of a transition'. Opening new gas fields as part of a transition to net zero makes about as much sense as restocking your drinks cabinet as part of a transition to sobriety.

Jackdaw will do nothing for the people of Scotland. Plans show it will provide just 2% of UK gas demand, only create 27 jobs, and it will leave us more dependent on gas despite its global fluctuating prices. Investing in renewables will create thousands of jobs and cut household energy bills.

mary4future.bsky.social reposted

Please read - it's short and important! But if in a great hurry: "Closing line: The Government can call Jackdaw pragmatic, necessary or a compromise. But the atmosphere does not recognise political language. More fossil fuels mean more climate change. The physics does not compromise."

mary4future.bsky.social reposted

Jackdaw won't bring down bills or create many jobs. But it will leave us even more dependent on volatile global gas markets, and worsen the climate chaos we already see around us. It's shocking that no other party is willing to stand up for our planet against the greed of oil and gas companies.

Remember the centrists doing their little victory dance around this? Turns out that decades of indulging "legitimate concerns", punctuated by occasional bouts of tutting at the overt far right, does more to strengthen the far right than weaken it. Who could have guessed? (Many of us).
