Apparently now they back FPTP - at least until their vote share falls below the Conservatives I suppose. Assuming the quoted Tice remarks are actually policy now. (H/t @politico.com )
The interesting question is what Reform do. Electoral reform was in their 2024 manifesto before they topped polls and started winning under FPTP.

For me, "doing better" for the Lib Dems means doing more with the MPs they already have. The key question here is "why should you want a large bloc of Lib Dem MPs"? When there are 72 of them, & liberal-democracy is in crisis, they have both an opportunity & an obligation to give a better answer.
Sure, but if we take this as read, whatβs the actually existing βbetterβ the Lib Dems should be doing?

I just genuinely don't understand what he's thinking from a political point of view, let alone a moral one. What is his theory for why Starmer became so unpopular? That he wasn't Andy Burnham? Surely he sees it was cowardly shit like this that helped tank his predecessor's ratings.

Little piece from me for @arguablymag.bsky.social on why we Westminster electoral reform is more plausible now than it has been for generations www.arguably.uk/p/electoral-...

oh my god!!!! there's an actual answer!!!! Google Maps does hide Brighton!!!!!!! bsky.app/profile/robi...
I actually know the answer to this and it's slightly insane. Google pulls from Wikipedia to determine if a place is a city, town, neighbourhood, whatever. Brighton's first line describes it as a "seaside resort" so Google Maps thinks it's a neighbourhood and doesn't display it in the "city" font.

If true, we get 3 things. None good. 1. The direct negative growth/fiscal impacts of cutting immigration. 2. A Chancellor who prioritises their own personal/ideological obsessions over the UK economy. 3. A PM who through myopia or weakness chooses 1 and 2.
The Times reporting that Andy Burnham succeeded in persuading Shabana Mahmood to become Chancellor because it would give her more control over cutting immigration

in retrospect, just quite a weird politician www.economist.com/britain/2026...
Health warning Find out now published a poll for Gorton & Denton with 51 respondents after don't knows removed. That's +-14%, if it was possible to actually get a representative sample that small. This is Lab +14, Ref -12 since the locals, nationally they have Lab +2, Ref -2 over the same period.
Greater Manchester Mayoral By-Election Voting Intention: LAB: 38% (-25) GRN: 22% (+15) RFM: 19% (+12) RES: 9% (New) CON: 8% (-2) LDM: 3% (-1) Ind: 1% (New) 2nd Round: LAB: 64% GRN: 36% Via @findoutnow.bsky.social, 7-13 Jul. Changes w/ 2024.

I'm sure a fair few social liberals who had been chased away from Labour are at least Burnham-curious and may return β I suspect that's the poll bump so far. But I don't think it would take much, at all, to chase them away again. And I think they'd be much harder to pull back a second time.
To me, the big picture problem here is that it sets Labour back on the same failed course as 2024 to 2026, of offering nothing to social liberals but going βdonβt worry. Can I interest you in some failed economics instead?β

One of the ways the Starmer people went wrong I think is going beyond "showing you're not so left wing that it mobilises centre-centre right votes against you" to "repeatedly kicking the left". You want to be inoffensive enough not to scare the horses, not yelling "BOO!" at your own fucking horses

A great thing is that most English people don't know or care which player that is. They're English, they play for England. Most people couldn't care less what country the player was born in, or where their ancestors came from. They're representing England today, not a stereotype of 1776 England.
Once of the best players on the planet atm being half Irish and half Kenyan and playing for England, you must know generations of colonisers are spinning in the soil
