When my Paw Paw (from Texas) retired, he got great joy from really, deeply answering when telemarketers asked “How are you?” He’d drawl out “Welllllllll, lemme tell ya…”
Friendly reminder, never start small talk with us if you're not ready for the story about how Aunt Grażyna is coughing up pieces of her lung as her cancer slowly dissolves them.

Queer histories are often preserved in places built by and for communities themselves. Writer and artist Brooke Palmieri reflects on the people who save these traces and why preserving what might disappear matters. 📚 Read the essay in Vanishing Culture: archive.org/details/vani... 🧵

New article (fully OA) with Christopher Lewin! Did the Cornish and Manx languages die? Yes. But did they get revived and go on the highest level of recognition in European language policy? Also yes! We explore how that happened, and what it means for language revitalisation. doi.org/10.1177/1468...

This is legit wild. One of the Trumpiest GOP kooks we’ve had holding high office here in Texas makes an absolute spot-on, beautiful, non-partisan call for government transparency against the governor’s attempt to hide his emails with Elon Musk.
Since so many missed it, let me share it without comment:

Enormous news. A melanoma vaccine, one of the most deadly cancers out there. Science is good and helpful and there should be more of it. www.washingtonpost.com/health/2026/...

Amazing
70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

This is something i have to increasingly stress to academics these days when they're prepping bids for projects: If one of the outputs is a website, we gotta think about how much of it would still work if, at some point, we just had to flatten it down to html when the money, or patches, run out.

Finally picking up Rufus from the ER vet. They wanted to observe him for a few hours. So far everything seems ok!
The ER vet gave Rufus one shot to throw up (pretty sure he threw up all the contraband) and one anti nausea shot. He seems fine. Just a little sleepy. Vet is calling pet poison control to see if there’s anything else we should do.

At the emergency vet with Rufus, who ate something he shouldn’t have (something that was in a sealed box inside a closed Ziplock inside a purse. He’s too smart for his own good)

I’m about halfway through @annaguirre.bsky.social’s The Handbook of Hocus Pocus and it is so good. I am living for the wonderful father/daughter bond between Thea and Mudge. It’s making me miss my sweet dad.
I was lucky to have wonderful, supportive parents. My dad’s parents were awful and his life would have been immeasurably better if he’d cut them out of his life. (My dad learned to parent by doing to exact opposite of what his parents would have done and by using my mom’s dad as a role model.)
I’m really enjoying this live cam of Lake Superior. It has waves, and stars, and sometimes the aurora borealis. Super soothing!

Wishing a big happy 70th birthday to Mae Jemison! She will be known for all time as the first Black woman in space, but we should also remember her time as a Flying Doctor in Africa, and an entrepreneur working towards the equal global distribution of technology. tinyurl.com/mwyc9rvn #WomenInSTEM

I want to see a good John Brown movie! My twins and I visited Harper’s Ferry in 2025 because they got super into his story (thank God for great history teachers!)
Back in 2001, I wrote a 65-page treatment for a 3-hr John Brown movie to be directed by John Frankenheimer, in 35mm b&w: God's Angry Man. He wanted Lance Henriksen as John Brown & Clarence Williams III as Frederick Douglass. Still bummed it didn't happen. (He died in 2002.)

something that occurred to me is, everyone knows it’s possible to become a musician with work and practice. but you can’t work on and practice music while staring slackjawed at your phone. the real promise of generative AI is the ability to ‘make’ ‘art’ without reducing your slackjawed scroll time
