Gonna ask students in the journalism ethics class I'm helping with: Who here thinks it is ethical for newspapers to run op-eds under the names of people who didn't write the piece but merely signed off on it? (They do this all the time.)

Joe Sonka 😐@joesonka.lpm.org

Mitch Mconnell to Trump in WSJ Op-Ed: “Ending the obeisance to Mr. Putin may be table stakes for the end-of-year legislation. The president should plan accordingly.”

NEW: Maricopa County will restore 25 voters’ registrations after they were falsely flagged as noncitizens, Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes (D) announced. Mayes sued Maricopa County Recorder Justin Heap (R) Thursday, demanding that he add the voters back to the registration rolls.

democracydocket.comMaricopa County will restore citizens’ voting registrations, Arizona AG says“It should not have taken litigation to make Justin Heap follow the law — that is his duty and the duty of all election officials.”

I hope these people clapping in the background will at some point wake up and realize that their god frowns upon this kind of shit.

Rally speaker: "Mike Rogers is an American. Abdul has a birth certificate. The birth certificate says he's a citizen of America. You know what? a birth certificate doesn't make you an American."

If red states really cared about election integrity, they wouldn't have pulled out of ERIC—and some didn't, to their credit. It was a totally nonpartisan coalition designed to help state elections officials maintain accurate voter rolls and flag fraud. And, yep, Trump himself condemned it.

motherjones.comStates already have a good way to ensure election integrity—and MAGA hates itThe rejection of ERIC by GOP officials has, ironically, undermined their own voting systems.

This line from the legislative analyst in the CA voter guide section on Prop. 40, the billionaire wealth tax initiative: "California is home to a few hundred people with net worth over $1 billion, often called billionaires." That's quite an analysis!

Don't believe any scandalous things you read about Democratic candidates on social media in the week before the election, because they are likely part of a Russian disinformation campaign designed to help Trump (with help of RW enablers) keep Congress. Putin has much to gain—and a lot to lose.

Allowing one unelected man to have control over crucial aspects of the US military, allied militaries, the US space program, and so many other aspects of human life is absolutely insane. We were stupid to allow this to happen and it must be fixed ASAP.

Helping teach a journalism ethics class today. We're debating the concept of objectivity. I'm going to ask the students what they think of this "objective" headline, which is literally true, but...

CNN@cnn.com

Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed disavowed the Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist political movement, during a heated exchange at a town hall. https://cnn.it/4s7r1TL

Both are newsworthy. So the headline, though long, should be: "United CEO Calls for Wealth Taxes He Knows the Supreme Court Will Never Allow, and Suggests a New Way to Milk Money From the People Who Fly Coach"

Pete Marchetto@petemarchetto.bsky.social

You would think this would be headline news. This is how the New York Times has chosen to headline the article that contains it.

Are you kidding? They are NOT powerless to stop him. The list of things Trump could legitimately be impeached and removed for is as long as Santa Christmas list. Low-hanging fruit in abundance. Tantalizing, as it were. They can stop him as soon as they grow a pair.

Republican lawmakers are incensed about Trump's dismissal of Ukraine — and powerless to stop him. That frustration hit a new peak on Monday as they sought to address Trump’s decision to purchase Russian diesel, waive sanctions on Moscow, and potentially stop sharing intelligence with Ukraine.

Lol, Tommy was a plant! But Tommy and Timmy Teepell tanked.

Marisa Kabas@marisakabas.bsky.social

Huge follow-up reporting to my scoop: The Guardian confirmed America Next—the conservative nonprofit founded by Bobby Jindal that was offering students $ to disrupt El-Sayed events—paid a firm registered to Tommy Teepell’s dad Timmy $250k for “canvassing and influencer marketing” against El-Sayed.

Wait a sec. We already have major programs to compensate people who report serious wrongdoing—typically by corporations, wealthy individuals, and government officials. They're called whistleblowers, and Trump is doing his best to crush them.

Trump makes it sounds like Ukraine's defeat is a done deal: "Ukraine has to want to make a deal, because the US has spent a fortune. Europe has spent a fortune. Europe is tired of it. If they don't make a deal -- ultimately it's just gonna get worse. You have a very big country in Russia. It's time"

Because other people's property taxes paid for your education and local government services?

Politico@politico.com

“I’m old. I’ve paid my home off,” said Ray Warner, a 72-year-old Akron resident. “Why would I pay property tax?” Across the country, homeowners are asking the same question and revolting against property taxes at a scale not seen in a half century.

What kind of terrible person thinks this is acceptable? These people who came out to see Trump speak should be fucking ashamed of themselves. Also, I wager pretty much all of the 2 million to 3 million Muslim Americans registered to vote are damn well going to do so.

Trump on El-Sayed: "His name is actually Abduladadalalalala. It's Adulbabababababa Mohammed Al-Sayed. So his middle name is Mohammed. So I was right. He's a jihadist."

I'm worried Trump is going to attempt a coup on Election Day. I really am. All of these clearly bullshit cases just feel like a pretext for them to invoke the Insurrection Act, declare martial law, and seize ballots and voting machines. I wouldn't put it past them.

Given that the administration's claims of 16,000 noncitizens on Nevada voter rolls turned out to be 100% bogus, this almost certainly is bogus, too. It really sucks to have a DOJ that is both incompetent and untrustworthy.
