I've just signed the Palantir Pledge, joining politicians across the world in committing not to support any public contracts with this US tech giant. The next big battle here is to use the upcoming break clause to kick Palantir out of our NHS!

This point needs to be made over and again: The main purpose of wealth taxes should not be to raise revenue. That's a small and secondary benefit. The main purpose should be to *reduce the fortunes of the ultrarich*. Why? Because those fortunes present a massive threat to democracy and public life.

Defra breached law, with Tory govt was in office, when it let farmers use bee-killing pesticide, watchdog says. This is one outcome of capture of the state by corporations, and secrecy. Govts pursue economic growth, not resilience, at almost any cost.

Seems to be a lot of selective memory in UK's right-wing newspapers about schools not closing during the 1976 heatwave. I just checked and, yes, many schools did close early as well as allow parents to "keep their children at home if they wish". This clipping from London Evening News, 29 June 1976

BREAKING: I've secured a parliamentary debate next week on banning all MPs' second jobs. Farage has pocketed over £1 MILLION from outside "work" since the General Election. Being an MP is a full-time job. No MP should be out chasing lucrative second jobs. Let's end this racket!

What some of us have been warning of for decades is happening, faster and fiercer than most imagined, even in the mildest and most temperate corners of the world. #ClimateBreakdown

MetJam@metjam.co.uk

34.8ºC at Kew Gardens breaks its May AND June records by OVER 4ºC for its May record set in 1922 and by 0.2ºC for its June record set in 1976. Unprecedented heat for the UK in late May, and likely to be bettered tomorrow. A rounded 35ºC temperature should not happen in May.

"It might take our producers five minutes to find 60 economists who feared Brexit and five hours to find a sole voice who espoused it. But by the time we went on air we simply had one of each; we presented this unequal effort to our audience as balance. It wasn't." @maitlis.bsky.social

This is yet another example of the weaponisation of antisemitism. When so much of our media mis-report what Prince Harry said, it’s not coincidence, it’s deliberate and systematic. By omitting his reference to “anti-Muslim hate” they are turning news into propaganda

The King's Speech and cost-of-living crisis. 2.73m households in England live in fuel poverty. 4.5m-6.1m can't adequately heat homes and stay warm and healthy. Since 2020 energy companies made £125bn profit. 120,000 Britons die in fuel poverty annually. Yet no curbs on profiteering.
