I learned a new word today, and had to look up how it was pronounced. Interesting thread about divisions within Switzerland.

For intl observers wondering what happens next: On 11/20, the SVP parliamentary group will decide which of the eight candidates to nominate. The catch? This is purely an informal convention. No law obliges other parties to vote for these candidates. Yet Swiss consociationalism constrains parliament

How crap is it that the Apple parental controls can only be managed from Apple devices? Google have a web app so parental controls can be managed anywhere you have access to a web browser (as well as iPhone and Android apps). Big tech really doesn't get to be this half-arsed about anything else.

I learnt what "Greenwich Lightvessel" was from this map. It's nowhere near Greenwich! (and is 0.0015949º west of Greenwich according to OpenStreetMap)

I thought this was slightly cool until I zoomed in enough to see the sweeps happening in real time. Absolutely amazing.

There isn't a day goes by where I don't find another way to despise Microsoft. Did you know that when you install Minecraft Java Edition, it's not available to all accounts on the PC? Only the person who installed it is allowed to run it.

If it's installed by an adult (because they are the administrator of the PC) then only the adult can play it. Sucks if the software in question is a game for kids. Only Microsoft could create a system like that.

Imagine if each child in your family had to buy an their own copy of a game to play on the same XBox? MS Support confirm that no other software works like this, but don't care if you accidentally install it to the wrong account. The only solution is to buy again. How is that even legal?

I'm sad to report that the bike lane in Ealing Broadway is closed temporarily while work is undertaken. Normal parking will resume as soon as possible.

Could the operators be forced to observe a maximum capacity of a designated parking area? Should the council be allocating more designated spaces? I love rental bikes and this illustrates how many commuters in this location use them, but it is also NUTS!

It's one of the absolute pinnacles of the art form, both this final series and the whole great tapestry of it. It is both a fantastic bit of social history and also in of itself an item of social history, and it happened in a lot of ways by accident and serendipity.

Unless anything dramatic happens, reckon 70 Up will be the best television I have seen all year.

This must be one of the best documentaries ever made? I watched both these finale episodes back to back, regularly in tears.

Finally caught up with '70 Up' last night. Even though we've been watching it all our lives, it still gets you every time, doesn't it? Just such a profound and lingering sense of melancholy that runs through it all... www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sfc3...

What I love about the people answering “negative” is they are basically saying “the last thousand years? I don’t care for them”.

I've always wondered where this photo was taken. Can anyone help identify it? Almost certainly somewhere in the Swiss Alps near Luzern, maybe Pilatus, though I don't recognise it.

Never sure if the idea is to brag about the ones you feel lucky to have seen before they split up/a key band member dies, just list your favourites or illustrate the breadth of your musical taste. Or if they are a secret phishing exercise to work out your precise DOB based on musical taste...

The reason why so many 'cycling campaigners' are up in arms about the latest attacks on cycling & floating bus stops are simple... 1. Now do cars. Seriously, if you want to discuss road danger, making a more inclusive environment for pedestrians, then I've got some side roads & zebras to point at...

Moral of the story: 1) Lime, fix your fucking brakes. I did recommend she try Forest next time, and would say the same to anyone. 2) Someone please buy my Electra Townie (ladies 7i, vanilla cream, mint condition). Need the money & garage space for a new freezer. This, without the shock fork. /end

One of the first "outrageous" claims I saw as Jason Arday's media hounding unfolded was that he ran 30 marathons in 35 days! Wow! What a thing to claim! And the newspapers all suggested there was no evidence he actually did it. Well, they clearly didn't look very hard 🙄 🧵 1/26

My son got a Windows gaming PC for Christmas. We quickly purchased Minecraft Bedrock and Java Editions and installed it and he's regularly played Bedrock Edition. You'd think he'd just as easily be able to play Java Edition as the name of the purchase implied it was included. But it won't run.

It presents a warning about Family Link by way of explanation but there's no alternative way of launching it. Microsoft don't provide any support and suggest buying Java Edition again. I remember this Microsoftism - just keep running it until it works. Not at £29.99 a pop though.

My eleven year old is already in the habit of shrugging and saying "it's Microsoft" as an explanation of any failing, so his expectations are at least set appropriately. Anyone else have any suggestions for a way forward which doesn't involve "keep buying it until it works"? bsky.app/profile/milh...

To anyone who, like me, moderately optimistic about AI to get things right enough of the time to be extremely helpful, watch that evaporate instantly as you have to get support from Microsoft about the complexities of MS, XBox, Mojang, & Minecraft accounts and why you can't play the game you bought

The Daily Telegraph has raced through all five stages of climate denial this week. But this is, perhaps, the most ridiculous column so far: "Without minimising the severe downsides…especially on some poorer nations, many in Britain would enjoy the kind of warmer climate predicted by modellers..."

When I use the Argos Android app and elect to pay by PayPal, the PayPal login opens up in a layer within the app. I think with other apps IIRC they redirect you to your browser to login to PayPal.

My password manager offers to fill in the password which I assume means it's verified the site identity, but how are people meant to know for sure they are logging in to PayPal and not providing their credentials to the app owner?

The essence of America is eating fast food on your own in your car parked at a gas station the size of a city block, and that's good

UN Ambassador Matt Whitaker: "People are enjoying the United States of America because it's an awesome place. We have extraordinary things like Buc-ee's and Chick-fil-A, very convenient to eat in your car while you're having a phone call. It's an amazing country."

Is there some backstory to why the official photo of the Swiss Federal Council has so many bystanders busy in the background? The person adjusting the curtains, the reflection of the photographic team and their equipment in the mirror, and someone using a computer in the next room?

In 2 weeks, Switzerland will vote on the most radical far-right proposal so far. Wondering about the broader context? The FT (@mjruehl.bsky.social) has you covered: “While direct democracy can serve as a shock absorber, it can also propel radical ideas into the mainstream" bsky.app/profile/rfrb...

Rahel Freiburghaus@rfrbrghs.bsky.social

A very special first for me: seeing my research featured in the @financialtimes.com. This big read walks through the background of one of the most radical referendums Switzerland has faced: the far-right proposal to cap the country’s population at 10m (currently around 9.1m) on the ballot in June

In June, Switzerland will vote on what is so far the most radical far-right popular initiative launched by the Swiss People‘s Party SVP: capping the population at 10M (currently ≈9.1M). In this thread, I’ll break down what it’s about and how it fits into broader findings on Swiss direct democracy
