Reform aren’t on track to form the next Govt. 2/3rds of the public *hate* Reform with the passion of a thousand suns and we have FPTP. All Labour needs is not to appear actively hostile to left of centre voters.

"The petition hit 10,000 - the government must now formally respond within 60 days. Parliamentary bars cost £7.4m a year. Pints are £2 below pub price." If you don't want your MP to be allowed to vote on vital issues while drunk - please keep signing petition.parliament.uk/petitions/768417

Much easier just to evict US military from the UK, buy oil and gas in Yuan, and pay the toll to use the straits. Definitely not worth risking lives and equipment to help DJT save face.

For all the talk about Starmer potentially moving leftwards, it’s always useful to remember just how far the Overton Window in British politics has shifted to the right.

I do also appreciate the irony pointed out in the many replies that this guy is an offshore tax exile, but I also don’t think we need to dance around the fact that he’s talking about ethnicity, not actually about immigration. He’s being racist.

What went wrong? MMS has a pathological hatred of the left, which resulted in barely disguised contempt for the soft left, which in turn has left MMS and Starmer without people willing to defend them.

Had the journalist class used “Stalinism” consistently, ie, as shorthand for ideological purges, like it was used during the Corbyn years, then maybe MMS might have been disciplined into more sensible policy.

The Iron Economist gets it.

Greens are the anti environment party. Pretty much all their voters are much closer to ‘conservationist’ than environmentalist. Which is why they constantly have green leaders campaigning against solar farms and new energy infrastructure like pylons, or insisting we should bury all cables etc.

Starmer needs to acknowledge he didn’t win a huge mandate — the Tories collapsed, so Labour strolled in. Corbyn actually lost with more votes. What did McSweeney do next? Advise Labour into the lowest poll ratings in its history. So spare us the tears over McSweeney’s resignation. 👇🙄

Iran is an Islamic theocracy because of the US. Iran had a democratic government which the US and UK overthrew to install a brutal pro western dictatorship for oil. The 79 revolution was a direct consequence of this. People pretend the government is anti-US for no reason

The only way that Iran is prevented from becoming Syria or Libya is by having a replacement regime standing ready to takeover. That is more than simply having a prince, because a state is far larger than the figurehead. Most likely, Israel will want to break Iran up, which will lead to chaos.

Kraut@derparrot.bsky.social

If the Iranian regime decided that it will try to slaughter it's way out of this, then we should not let the Assad scenario repeat itself and kill the mullahs.

Tom's mistake is that he conflates full blown authoritarianism with fascism. As if fascism only occurs when there has been full consolidation of power. There are 2 major scholarly definitions of fascism both of which tom is ignorant of: 1) Palingenetic ultranationalism (Roger Griffin) /1

Tom Nichols@radiofreetom.bsky.social

My mistake has been trying to explain what "fascism" is to people who don't care what it is. So I'm going to try something else. Let's do this as a practical thought exercise. If America *were* fascist *today* - what would you have to do differently in your daily life? /1

I prosecute and defend the most serious sexual offences in our courts. The overwhelming majority of offenders are British-born. Overwhelmingly the victim is someone known to them, either a partner or relative. Anybody purporting to care about protecting women might start there.

Israel has no more right to exist than the world’s only Afrikaner state had a right to exist. A two state solution was never an option for South Africa. What makes Israel special? #Israel #Palestine

Social liberalism was popular, as was building hospitals without borrowing, so we got social rights and PFI. Labour was happy to fan Islamophobia though, because opposing it was not popular, but I guess that didn’t affect you.

Yeah, no, do not tell me, as a trans person, that the politics of the government that equalised the age of consent, lifted restrictions on gay adoption, and introduced civil partnerships are barely indistinguishable from this government.

The only difference is that the Blair govt rode a rising economy created on the back of financialisation. The politics are barely indistinguishable.

Julianna 💎@batariangal.eurosky.social

Ngl, it’s kinda irritating that the Starmer government has made me feel more positively towards Blair (‘97 Blair, that is, 2025 Blair is just a crackpot)

Nineteen months after South Africa brought a case of genocide to the ICJ and the establishment is only waking up to the reality now. Ignorance like that must surely be bought. As for Netanyahu, he is merely a symptom. The only difference between now and any point in the past 70yrs is intensity.

Yes, we should absolutely treat words about death far more harshly than we treat the people actually engaged in delivering death to hundreds of thousands of people. This is what liberalism means.

@lewisgoodall.com Listening to the most recent News Agents. In all the talk of negotiations, no one has mentioned the fact that the US and Israel seemingly colluded to use the negotiations as cover for a sneak attack. Where is the modicum of trust needed for any negotiation going to come from?

For me, these analyses always seem to forget that FPTP incentivises voting-against, rather than voting-for. No one votes for what they want, because our parties are too broad, so we all vote to keep other parties out, and there are very few Lab/Dem marginals.

furious at how perfect this column is, wish I could be happy for Duncan but unfortunately I'm simply seething at how good he is

Largely because centrists don’t make good martyrs. Serious point though, solving political problems using legal mechanisms is risky, as we’ve seen play out in the US.

How and why does infantile economics get platformed on the FT's home page? The columnist writes as if the EU economy has not operated within a developed monetary system since the Dutch invented banking and monetary systems in the 1600s - and instead relies on primitive barter schemes.
