A guy who works in Crozet. If you know me you know me. was once known as "bookshelfstud." posts never reflect my employer or other bodies i'm on.
serious site: https://which-side-are-you-on.ghost.io

i've debated for a while about starting a blog of some sort; i have a lot to say that i don't usually feel like converting into microblogging format. i'm going to try out Ghost for a while and see how it goes. it'll probably be mostly housing stuff, but today it's about colonialist violence.
When i walked in, the count was at 312 people, and there were at least thirty behind me in line. Great turnout, great meeting, great time-delayed-livetweet!
Crowd is forming early outside the middle school on Crozet waiting for the Three Notched Trail meeting.
Landowners were invited 30min early.
(Post delayed because the middle school was a data dead zone.)
I'll be at the meeting re: Three Notched Trail Monday evening. Stop by Friends of Three Notched Trail table to say hi #cville. engage.albemarle.org/three-notche...
It’s going to be a beautiful evening to hang out with friends new and old while watching the sunset. Come and join us this Wednesday at Bar Botanical in Crozet!
For first time attendees — look for us on the roof top patio, we'll be the folks with name tags (and, in my case, most likely wearing a Livable Cville ball cap). Feel free to DM me or @mmonaco.bsky.social if you have any questions
“i pay tax before, but still pay tax now?”
We spoke with dozens of half-literate morons about the machinations of local governance. Here’s what they’re saying.
“I’m old. I’ve paid my home off,” said Ray Warner, a 72-year-old Akron resident. “Why would I pay property tax?”
Across the country, homeowners are asking the same question and revolting against property taxes at a scale not seen in a half century.
Thread time: Crozet Community Advisory Committee, #CCAC1026
The online agenda is a couple months out of date, so it's gonna be a surprise! But I think Three Notched Trail is gonna be discussed.

Do Impact Fees Do More Harm Than Good?
Lessons From Calif:
Park fees sit unused.
Traffic mitigation fees don’t mitigate traffic.
Affordable housing fees make housing less affordable.
They are net-negative for city budgets in the long run.

I'm not sure if she's aware of it but this 2022 @rebeccajtiffany.bsky.social tweet is basically an article of faith at @liberalcurrents.com ( @sjshancoxli.liberalcurrents.com quoted it in www.liberalcurrents.com/feminism-wit... and I've referenced it countless times ever since)
John Yoo, aka Torture Memo guy, advocate for state-sponsored torture for almost 25 years. Obama should've prosecuted this guy for war crimes back in 2009.
John Yoo on Christa Pike, who survived a botched execution: "Why not use the firing squad? So I think what's gonna have to happen is Tennessee is gonna have to go back and try again."
"is Albemarle High School located in the development area," the greatest thread in the history of albemarle county, locked by a moderator after 12239 pages of heated debate,
seems nutty to me that Western Albemarle and Albemarle high schools are not located in development areas; just seems like a land use decision that is guaranteed to produce lots of car traffic
Crozet could really benefit from serious bike/ped infrastructure connecting the neighborhoods around the park to Western Albemarle. but that need is a product of the choice to "preserve the entrance corridor" near 64.
School board members get an annual stipend of $16,000, recently raised from $7,000. But Spillman says even that higher paycheck works out to less than minimum wage for what's essentially a 20-to-40-hour-a-week job. She juggled board responsibilities with full-time employment elsewhere.
Happy @cvilleweekly.bsky.social day to all who celebrate! This week, our cover belongs to former at-large Albemarle school board member Allison Spillman, who cut short her first term and resigned last month. I wanted to know why -- so I asked her.

Relatedly, it drives me crazy to see people describe “affordable housing“ like affordability has been baked into the walls of the housing unit itself. Just build more housing! The total number of units built is what drives affordability.
New literature review on housing ladder spillovers:
When rich tech workers move in, low-end rents go up. So does it follow that adding high-end homes would reduce them?
Yes. Changes at the top of the ladder can propagate down and affect prices at the bottom.

on so many topics, so many peoples' imaginations are limited to "the status quo, but it doesn't feel bad." when we sing "we can bring to birth a new world from the ashes of the old" some of us really mean it and some of us think the fire will be small
I'm not going to be able to be there in-person tonight; if you are, I owe you a large order of totchos from Firefly and/or a cold one. The county has promised to build housing on this site for 20+ years. Don't let them renege now.
If you have a few minutes today, send an email to bos@albemarle.org in support of this project.
Or show up at 6pm to Lane Auditorium in the County Building near downtown to speak during the public hearing for this rezoning.
It took another decade+ before my neighborhood actually broke ground, in part because site planning & engineering took forever. And yet today I have a house I love and neighbors I love and I get to live in Crozet.
5-1 (Mallek against), 3 acres across from Harris Teeter will be rezoned R6 for a project that would bring 18 units, mostly townhomes, 20% affordable for sale, plus a paved pedestrian path from Cory Farms Rd. to Colony Drive. A win for housing in Albemarle County!
Galloway is looking back at the PC reasons for denial.
First: community engagement?
Staff: they met the legal requirement.
Galloway finds it "concerning" that the Planning Commission named something that wasnt a legal requirement as a reason for denial.
Missel agrees with Pruitt that this land will be less beautiful.
(I hate this framing of building homes SO much. This is really the role of the supervisors, aesthetic critique? Breathless proclamations of love for idyllic single family housing as opposed to MY KIND OF HOUSE??? Dudes, shut up.)

I went back to read the BOS minutes from when my neighborhood was approved. I would ask that the board today take the same approach as the board 20 years ago: acknowledge there may be hurdles to figure out during site planning, but approve the rezoning & leave the engineering to the engineers.
With their parents' permission, I interviewed Riley about their self-dubbed "master plan" to prank Harrow, and whether we should, in fact, be more frightened of children. (Riley says yes.)
Once again thinking about Octavia Butler's brilliant 'Bloodchild', an incredibly sophisticated discussion of the family and its hierarchy through the lens of complex and disturbing human/alien mutualism.

One thing Im proud about with this project is using non sound source material & turning it into sound. For example, I converted all this archive material, newspaper clips, etc, into WAV files using a image to audio translator & collaged them together to illustrate the history. You hear what you see.
Working on the final section of my film today, the Charlottesville Basswood that was planted for the unveiling of the Robert E Lee monument, & also witnessed the Unite the Right rally in 2017, and I'm purposefully choosing the most ridiculous 19 century caricature of Lees surrender I can find.
One of the biggest intellectual vices in progressive politics/nonprofit world is constantly trying to shut down legitimate debates by insisting your preferred outcome is what "the community" (an ontologically good thing with undefined boundaries and homogeneous interests) wants.
"We need housing for teachers." "We need housing for artists." "We need housing for firefighters." This command and control shit drives me crazy. Just build enough housing for people.
Do you enjoy socializing with a good view? Then come join us at our meetup up this Wednesday from 5-7pm at Bar Botanical in Crozet.
It’s a great opportunity to get to know some people who want to make Albemarle County a better place for everyone.
A person at top form. It’s amazing when you consider his damn-near perfect earlier albums of music to be in effect false plateaus, but even with how good they are you kinda gotta. Scholarship, digital humanities, musical ability, a deep love for the land. danielbachman.bandcamp.com/album/the-wi...
Folks, these are always a good time; "just" getting to spend quality time with other people who care deeply about our area is a real treat. Come on out!
