Give this a look also! And support indie DLC generally - all of the absolute nonsense that has been chatted about DLC historically has largely emerged from cynical guff emitted by a few big players. Making stuff that players actually like at a price they are happy to pay for it is GOOD.

Vampirium: 1997 isnโ€™t in next fest, but while youโ€™re in a wishlisting mood, Iโ€™d really appreciate you adding us too. Makes a big difference and helps us position ourselves better down the road :) Also I added pyromancy today. So thatโ€™s fun. store.steampowered.com/app/4035190/...

The Steam slopathon *increases* the perceptual value of handmade visual art surely? Game art needs to communicate the vibe and values of the game. If players are seeing a large amount of low-quality generated art they will get turned off by that and gravitate towards stuff that resonates more.

So many of the responses to current tech are "well guess it's not worth trying any more because things are happening" Same thing I've talked about endlessly before with "indiepocalypse" - this isn't a concerted critique of material conditions, it is just making yourself feel bad for no reason.

This is why, again, I think it's important to be clear and honest about the capabilities and limitations of tech: if you are going to pay attention to external conditions at all, then boiling up a weird hate-fantasy or constructing a hype monolith is going to harm you.

Tapping the sign because people are continuing to crash out and declare all videogames dead again.

Dominic Tarason@dominictarason.com

Okay, people are already getting really depressed and frustrated with the Next Fest, so I'll say what I said last time round: Wait a day or two. They order the games on the pages by hours played, and 99% of the AI garbage will sink like a stone. Right now it's just undifferentiated and unranked.

I feel that every musician who survived the barrier to entry falling out of the bottom of production coupled with the switch to digital streaming should adopt an indie game developer and help calm them down

I've been making music for a very long time with some degree of professional success in different areas (whatever that is supposed to mean) and I still can't really hear the difference between various vintage compressors or understand why people go on about them so much

Couple of exceptions... 1) LA2A's do seem to be a "just make it sound good" box for vocals 2) I can often hear various forms of "glue" compression on drum mixes That's about it though

I think possibly coming to this side of production more in an era where transient shaping, clipping, limiting and saturation can all be handled independently I'm less attracted to the "magic black box" approach to it all. But again the LA2A does just slap big time so I might just be wrong.

Have you wishlisted Vampirium: 1997 on steam today? No? Really? Come on now. No. Iโ€™m not linking it. Find it yourself, itโ€™s the least you can do. Disgusting.

I've been pretty vocal about my issues with the Stop Killing Games campaign but everything there is downstream of terrible industry practises like this.

NBA 2K25 is being delisted later this month, with servers shutting down at the end of the year. All online modes (including the single-player story mode, which is tied to online currency) will no longer be playable. www.videogameschronicle.com/news/nba-2k2...

Small business can be a good fit for games - that doesn't have to entail zero growth, zero investment, zero shared equity etc Unfortunately, we have developed systems which are very hostile towards it, to the extent that anything small business-related tends to get elided with Big Business Concerns

I think I'm doing alright with the various Belfast accents and then a taxi driver started talking to me about EA and I found the conversation very confusing. Eventually became clear he was talking about AI.

People who actually know about critical theory - is there a term for nostalgia-bait content which exaggerates distinctive features of the original inspiration? An example might be a "Y2K"-styled modern indie game with crazy volumetric lighting everywhere.

It's TIME! TO! GET! HYPE! Today, I get to proudly unveil Steam Hype, the project I've been working on with the help of @hookshot.media for the past two and a half months. A new PC gaming site which aims to demystify PC gaming, cut through the 100+ daily releases and spotlight indies as much as AAA

steamhype.comSteam HypeSteam Hype is your go-to destination for discovering the latest, greatest, and most talked-about games on Steam.

I feel two things about this: 1) The Steam team has an almost insurmountable challenge when it comes to dealing with the range of content on the platform 2) Indies in particular really need clearer, simpler content guidelines and a better understanding of what those mean in terms of visibility

I'm pleased to report I've still got it. The Royal Writ is out now on Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox and Game Pass. Really happy more people now have the opportunity to play this brilliant deckbuilder.

I'm *very* lucky to have been able to write game music in some form for 20-odd years - it's one of the things I'm most happy about in career terms. Thanks to everyone who has given me those opportunities.

Tim Curry's contribution to movies and roles that end up in the gay cinema pantheon across genres is absurd. For me, Clue is a perfect cast with iconic performances, but without Curry being the emcee of the circus it would not be the movie I could go back to over and over again and still smile.

Game design isnโ€™t about being able to identify problems. Everyone who plays games can identify problems. Game design is about diagnosing player experience, having intent, and executing. I think to a lot of folks outside dev, game criticism (an art in itself) is seen as interchangeable with design.

Whatโ€™s a thing from your area of expertise (or special interest) that you think it would behoove everyone else to know?

A person who feels like they have to get all of the achievements in a video game, even if they don't really like getting the achievements, is at the opposite end from me on some kind of personality slider and that's cool and interesting
