👋🏾 It's lovely to see so many new faces so let me introduce myself! I'm a software engineer who's excited to join a social network that values how the open web makes the internet a magical place for creators. I'm currently building educational software and experimenting with creative coding.

70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

theatlantic.comThe Man Who Saved the Internet YesterdayOndřej Surý was a relatively anonymous volunteer working on PHP security. Then the internet exploded.

Not a single word of this is hyperbolic in the slightest. Buy your friends in cybersecurity the drink or chocolate of their choice right now. We are not doing well

wrote about "Black October," the PHP vulnerability, and the AI-fueled dread and panic I'm seeing among almost all of the cybersecurity experts I've ever known. I think people w/ LLMs are brute forcing software the same way they brute forced social media w/ slop www.404media.co/php2shell-bl...

Security through obscurity is a terrible principle but in practice a lot of things didn't get hacked bc people ignored them, or didn't know they existed, or just generally got missed. AI makes it easy to probe all of these things at scale + makes it easier to find/develop exploits

I just received an email that the Grace Hopper Celebration scheduled for later this month has officially been cancelled 😢. When I was a student I had such an incredible experience attending GHC with my university’s Women in Computer Science (WiCS) organization.

I'm looking forward to exploring the @codepen.io API. I've set up a selection of CodePen demos on my personal site, but they're forks that either diverge or have to be manually kept in sync. The API will let me use my local development workflow to keep self-hosted and CodePen-hosted pens in sync.

DID YOU KNOW: @codepen.io has a read/write API? blog.codepen.io/docs/api/api... Comes in GraphQL & Rest flavors so you can use what's best for your task. Updating a Pen is super easy and seamless.

#virtualCCFest is an amazing creative coding festival designed for anyone who wants to make computers playful again👇🏾

Make something with code at #virtualCCFest: a portfolio site, livecoded music, or generative art. 13 workshops, keynotes from Lauren Lee McCarthy and Dan Shiffman. Free, online, all levels. Oct 17, 9 am PT / noon ET. ccfest.rocks/register/

I’m doubling-down on my physical media collection and forgot how DVDs/Blu-Ray include bonus content. I love that I can watch the animated movie along with feature-length storyboards and avoid subscribing to another service. 😍

I miss the World Wide Web that I grew up on and fell in love with.

Something endearing about the times when you’d still say World Wide Web

A few years ago, I attended #virtualCCFest for the first time and left inspired! Today, I will be delivering the closing keynote at CC Fest. I'm looking forward to sharing my love of creative coding and encouraging others to archive (and share!) their creative work.

I’ll be speaking at Creative Coding Fest! It’s free, fun, and open to anyone who wants to explore creative coding. Hope to see you there!

#virtualCCFest features two amazing keynotes, @monica.dev, software engineer, community organizer, and @charstiles.bsky.social, computational artist, educator. All the details and RSVP at ccfest.rocks

#virtualCCFest is back on Sunday, Sept 28, with amazing keynotes and workshops on creative coding lined-up. You can see and details and RSVP at ccfest.rocks. If you donate your funds will go to support the costs of the free event, Zoom licenses and small stipends for presenters and keynotes.

Based on my collection of memes and photos iOS classifies these celebs/notable figures under my “People”: * Beyoncé * President Obama (& “The Rock” Obama) * Rihanna * Issa Rae * President Biden * Taraji P Henson * Simone Biles * Janelle Monae * Dr. Cristina Yang * Redacted 🍊

I’m least surprised by the appearances of Janelle Monáe, Simone Biles and Rihanna. Dr. Cristina Yang also makes sense since I’ve watched every single Grey’s Anatomy episode that she was in.

I think the next phase of my Webmention project will be setting up a linkblog to share my favorite content & bookmarks.

(In my ideal world everyone would get their own link blog too, but sharing links on Bluesky and Mastodon is almost as good)

#VirtualCCFest is happening tomorrow, and it looks like registration is still open! If you're interested in #CreativeCoding, this free event is a great way to spend your Saturday learning and getting inspired by fellow creators. Sign up here: ccfest.rocks/register/
