It's not enough for me to have the most successful live-service game in the world, I also need to save money by not paying my workers. It's not enough to have a technology that lets me not pay my workers, people have to keep liking me after I start using it. I'm the 837th richest person in the world

I had my AI agent create an app called β€œLunch” to help me with decision fatigue and boost my productivity. It has a few pictures of things I might like to eat. Tapping one spawns a subagent to order that item on Uber Eats and 60-90 minutes later I’m eating. It’s 600 thousand lines of JavaScript.

I don't know that there is a definitive line to cross that makes you say, "I live in a police state now" but when masked gunmen can routinely brutalize the public, citizen or immigrant alike, with impunity, you have reached that point.

the thing about programming is the finding out is usually pretty disconnected from the fucking around, be it a dev/ops split, or user/developer, or even past/future, people do not get to experience the consequences of their choices and are not incentivised to imagine them either

a lot of people have encountered the overconfident stem nerd, the guy who programs and so everything else must be easy from the outside it does look like "i'm smart at code, so therefore i can do anything", but i promise you that they're like this with code too

Honestly there were major signs of coding's downfall but one of them was my late-career certainly that "code quality" is a pretty fake idea That was the main impetus behind this blog post, articulating a feeling I'd had for years engineering.ramp.com/post/what-ma...

engineering.ramp.comResponsibly mid-size: What Matters, SuffersQuestioning what is gained from "clean code" in actual, production environments.

I once inherited a python system that handled about $100m in ARR. It was a single Django class that was 25k lines long and had zero tests or docs that always called out to MySQL and postgres via fork+exec rather than actually using those client libraries

Craft was very fun to think about; truly, I loved it. But customers didn't care, and "bad code" so, so rarely mattered in any business sense. so when the slopification started, it didn't surprise me at all to see coding fall before, say, most art stuff depressing truth

Congrats to Lula on overcoming Mark Zuckerberg and Donald Trump to defeat Hospital Pervert Jr., even as his opposition literally blocked off roads and turned off bus service during election day. Fascists are scary but they are always, 100% of the time, ultimately gigantic fucking losers.

cool, cool

it was really eye-opening to see NYT quote AOC with all her filler words β€” making her sound scattered, dumber β€” vs. how they sanewash Trump's insane ramblings not a fan of Mayer but I've always felt like she's a media punching bag

pretty clear evidence that republicans in the US losing any election going forward are going to always beg for a coup if they lose. lots of people will have to go to jail

Well Dweller is a really cute, fun Metroidvania. Took me an hour or two to feel natural (after Nine Sols I was so afraid of contact damage; this game has none) but it's exactly what the doctor ordered after so many brutal get gud games

per that last point: I can't remember the last time I was excited to explore a map like this and unlike most of the Metroidvanias I've played recently, this actually does let you explore! and you can do things in alternative orders!

if Nine Sols was "Sekiro as Metroidvania," I think Well Dweller reminds me most of a Rayman game most Metroidvanias have the same 4 mechanics ("got air dash." then "got double jump") and I like when a game mixes it up a little

it's so stupid how nice it feels to die in a game and not have some silly shade/grave mechanic where you have to fetch your shit or lose everything boss battles have effectively zero runback and, this is more a Pablo thing: great platforming instead of much ado about combat

Sweeney tries to make out he's saying this in defence of the beleaguered indie devs who want to use AI, but remember that his company laid off 1000 people earlier this year before pivoting to AI. He's taking this stance for one reason: he loves money

Trump didn't like Ramaswamy until he saw him sticking up for child rapists and their enablers. He hated the Ivy League until Cornell had a prominent fraternity gang-rape story in the news. The attack ad against Acton is another in a long list of right-wing gotchas that have blown up in their face -- Eric Schmitt's attack on Jack Smith, the conspiracy that Talarico was in rehab, Tommy's heckling of El-Sayed, etc etc. Their echo chambers keep convincing them to do incredibly dumb shit

saw You Can See Everything. of the 3 movies I've seen in the last 4 days, this was my favorite. I think some Nathan Fielder praise is over the top, but I do feel he's definitely one of those artists who gets stuff made that I don't think anyone else would make

others have said this, but it's true: it's fun watching Nathan confront people who can keep character longer than he can. he's really an expert and keeping it together, and he's been challenged hard before, but you see him often (justifiably) unravel at some of the things coming his way

spoiler: the scene where Billy is both bragging about his sexual prowess to [πŸ™ƒ] THEN talking shit at them for "getting dragged on X" over hating Charlie Kirk WHILE glazing Kirk... oh fellas, it was scary and satisfying to finally see a mask off moment. remember that when you meet tech idiot men

there's a certain discomfort I feel for the genre I call "look, we put mentally unwell people in front of a camera." I get this when I watch The Room, for example. this had a lot of those moments like Liz's performance is so detached from any reality we inhabit

alright at long last I beat this fucking game. previous thread here. it mystifies me so much. like I said previously, I both love it but also really, really got mad at it and hate that this is Good Games now but also, the way I just played it was really funny, all told bsky.app/profile/more...

pablo@morepablo.com

also if its not clear I am annoyed this is called a Metroidvania. very, very barely. the world really sucks to explore. actual customization of fights with Jades comes online way too late. like opera: the bosses are arias but the "metroidvania" is just recitative it's also kind of a masterpiece

so in August I bit the bullet and just said "fuck it, I know the game pretty well, let's just cruise through." I also set the game to English (I try to play games in Spanish for practice; but especially stylized lore-heavy games, I tend to miss a lot) and this time, I loved it!

so: all you have to do to love Nine Sols is already have played through it for 25 horrible, frustrating hours. if you've already played through the whole thing, you're going to have a great time all my old points still apply though. I wouldn't call this a Metroidvania any more than Portal is an FPS

so per the last thread, I read a confusing guide and ended up locked out of the "good ending" (and some pretty important loot, lol). the game doesn't support multiple saves on a run, so the only way was to start again. I'd already put in 25 hours into the game at this point
