Going beyond the default sizes of paper Blick sells means you're on your own to figure out how to crop and flatten paper. A healthy interest in cookbooks and art books comes much in handy here. 🙏

seems plausible that in the short term, people are not going to use a janky Adobe clone en masse in a way that fundamentally alters things. But people using AI KoolAid-manning into open source hobby coding communities and destroying them — I think that's already happened and going to get worse

Lastly, in their enthusiasm to sell a fairytale, they really buried the degree to which I am looking for a real job. I am actively looking for a real job. Please let me know if you catch wind of any geospatial roles opening up!

This is a Wisconsin mage

No but, like, y’all don’t understand — Ruth is 104 years old & tonight, before the game, she predicted a 6-2 Brewers win. AND THAT JUST HAPPENED. She Ruth did this. She also promised a round of drinks for everyone. PROST, Ruth!!! 🍻

Well, it appears that I have joined the ranks of the laid-off. Anyone know of anything interesting going on in geo?

Interesting. Tried this out and while it *looks* identical to Photoshop, it's missing most of the functionality under the hood. Hit weird bugs and behavior pretty quickly. Still, maybe a good start? Bit eyebrow raising that this funnels to a "buy our image generation tokens" effort tho.

a shapefile coming in six pieces always felt kind of silly, but gdb files coming in even more files + deciding to flaunt having useful file names is *maddening*.

J'aurai beaucoup de @jimbenton.bsky.social dans cette liste, parce que j'adore son univers. Et celui-ci est marrant parce qu'il est à la fois un one-panel, et à la fois pas du tout. On touche encore à une limite de l'exercice, ici.

Taking time this afternoon to try and do some product photos of a recent map of Dupont Circle. *Man* I need to buy some house plants. #CreativeCarto

It's weird how, when the #UN was discussing their resolution on the #EqualEarth projection, they didn't even *consider* the Asymmetric Monstrosity, which is also equal-area. somethingaboutmaps.wordpress.com/2025/04/10/a...

Daniel Huffman@pinakographos.bsky.social

Over on Mastodon (you can find me here: mapstodon.space/@pinakographos), someone was kind, and perhaps disturbed, enough to describe the Asymmetric Monstrosity as their favorite projection. You can freely download a copy here: somethingaboutmaps.wordpress.com/2025/04/10/a...

Favorite scene of Coyote vs. Acme is easily a scene where Coyote and Will Forte have a breakup argument in a Washington D.C. hotel room that is *exclusively decorated with prominent vintage world maps.*

One of the greatest discoveries at NICAR this year was this tool by Matt Stiles. Decodes REST api pages so you can actually get the data you want out of em' quick and easy.

Pablo Robles@pablorobles.bsky.social

Here is the tool for this week: www.ezesri.com Paste any ArcGIS feature layer or map server URL to view metadata, handle pagination automatically, apply filters, and export to GeoJSON, CSV, or Shapefile with no code or installation needed. More tools here: josepablorobles.com/tools.html

Aside from everything else, these attempts to rename geography reveal a lack of any inspiration. Not even a feinting a reach back to some historical roots or local stories. Just angst branding.

National Hurricane Center on TS Dolly "The timing of the use of the name Dolly for this storm is purely coincidental. "

I'm too far away to get there, but truly jealous of anyone around NYC that can mourn at the Rocky Horror Picture Show on Broadway tonight. They still have a bunch of tickets, some for just $66!

Given the way everyone responds rationally to everything, this could cause *actual* public outrage in the next week! (The next name on the Atlantic hurricane list is...Dolly.)

hard to lose such a foundational thing. Dolly's voice is one of my earliest memories, and I know i'm going heavy on Trio here but that was my way in. I loved how their voices paired with each other, how they were so strong individually and became something new together youtu.be/yn55-xvyBh0?...

What have the National Guard soldiers in D.C. been doing? They chased down a man who took two slices of pizza after trying to pay only $2 for them. They arrested a man who stole Slim Jims worth $7 from a pharmacy. In July, six soldiers held a woman who drank a bottle of root beer without paying.
