hmmm Sam Altman reminds me of a certain other dystopian business exec obsessed with the illegal procurement of Hugging Face

Dare Obasanjo@carnage4life.bsky.social

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says OpenAI’s management is responsible for its AI models going rogue and hacking Hugging Face. Definitely think the frontier AI labs overdid it last week and their play became obvious to everyone.

I consider myself a very tolerant woman, able to accept and even value cultural practices and behaviors that I am not initially familiar with. There are many ways to be. But damnit, y'all, lavalier mics are supposed to go on your *lapel!* Stop holding them in front of your mouth in videos!

Right now the world is full of people who want to code and write and paint and film stuff and people who want to play and read and look at and watch stuff and nobody is allowed to do any of that because some unrelated third guy isn't making enough money off the deal

Our games industry is people. Our studios are people. Our teams people, our games by people for people. Our games are made by people, in groups of people, in teams of people, making people things for people. The magic is people, and the people deserve so much better than all this. I am so sorry.

Looked into this more and I think they might have made them to keep up morale for the cast and crew? The shoot started in late March 1983 and didn't finish until early February 1984, so maybe they made these as gifts at the beginning of 1984 to be like "we're almost there, it will be worth it"

Looks like something they had made up as promotional items for David Lynch's Dune, but I'm not sure about the Happy New Year part

How long until we get a video with Olivia Reingold in a terrible wig doing a Scott Pelley impression

TrumpsTaxes@trumpstaxes.com

‘It’s not a part time job.’ Oof. Scott Pelley and Sharyn Alfonsi absolutely leveled Bari Weiss at an emergency 60 Minutes staff meeting today.

I am so absolutely lost by all the agreement to this. I was born in 1979 and was absolutely raised with technology from the word go. We had an inexpensive Commodore computer when I was 3, my suburban New Jersey public school taught us Logo programming in 1st grade on an Apple II,

middle school computer class in Fort Worth Texas in 1991 we were dialing into the BBS of the local newspaper. Had AOL on our home computer by 1992 and dial up internet by 1994. We certainly weren't rich and plenty of my friends had the same. "No email until adulthood" WTF

"I author Blu-Rays for a living." "They still make those?"

Prof. Nicole Holliday@mixedlinguist.bsky.social

What’s the worst question someone can ask after you tell them your profession? For linguists, it’s definitely “how many languages do you speak?”, but I’m curious what else is happening to the rest of y’all out there?!

when I was young, i used to wonder how people like this would fare in life, as they didn't seem suited for gainful employment. it turns out, the internet allowed them to accumulate a massive audience of similar idiots, enriching them and turning them into a presidential advisor

“Do we like Damien? We like Damien, don’t we? It’s all for him, we do it all for him. We just want him to look at us. We treat him well, sometimes he’s not very nice to us, but it is for him, it’s really all for Damien.”

Been watching a lot of Kitchen Nightmares recently to distract myself from the horrors, and I've decided the show's basic premise is "men would rather sink $1 million into a restaurant than go to therapy"

For some reason I heard this in the Law & Order VO guy's voice

Katie Mack@astrokatie.com

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

I did an event in DC & there was a party for donors etc after. Was talking to 2 ppl & I said "Things are so bad." They said "No this is how it is. Things swing one way, then another. It's normal." That's when I realized why Dems are toothless. They have no idea what this is. Frogs boiling in water.

People seem to forget the (multiple) episodes of Star Trek where all the people who programmed the computer running their society died and their children were so dumb they started worshipping the computer as a god

"Meanwhile, every version of "Braindead" eludes German audiences, where it remains illegal to present to the public." This is a funny misunderstanding of the situation in Germany because, sure, it's technically illegal to distribute it there, the worst that happens is they confiscate the copies.
