A new survey of 1,000 American adults found that the strongest supporters of transgender sports bans are not the people who admire women most: they are the people who hold the most hostile views about women. www.helenwebberley.com/news/transge...

This is a good illustration of how so much of AI theft isn't indirect (ie, data sucked into a model to train the chatbot) - it's actually **direct** copying, but *enabled* by GenAI. Of course it is: chatbots absolutely suck at creating good, new stuff.

Hey, @jimchalmers.bsky.social, #westpac is using the ACCC credit card surcharge changes as an excuse to nearly double my credit card charges and pump an extra 1.25% interest on top. Between this and the raised prices at the shops, I’d like the credit card surcharges back, thanks.

Here’s something I think doesn’t get said enough: It was very popular, after various horrific school massacres, to say “if this doesn’t move us to do gun control, nothing will.” Nobody ever mentions that the reason we won’t is 100% Republicans. 100%.

This pattern of exaggerated slights and inability to acknowledge how the environment helped him is a pattern for Andreessen. He shits on his Wisconsin upbringing, but seems to have been well-treated and showered with resources. Says the NSF should be eliminated, even tho if was key to his education.

Marisa's entire piece is terrific, but this part has really stuck with me. A group of College Republicans decided that El-Sayed wasn't "welcome" in the Senate and set out to stop him.

The key difference between Elizabeth Holmes and Elon Musk is that Holmes cost many in the ruling class a lot of money and Musk is making many in the ruling class a lot of money.

Still, the first of his penguin photos in the book is enormously entertaining, because it suggests they found Levick—a fellow male, after all—a threat, and had they had the power of flight, perhaps they might have had a go at him the way other sea birds do. (Puffins, for example: little bastards)

It is, today, 115 years since navy surgeon and Antarctic explorer George Murray Levick saw his first Adélie penguin, after which he wrote several pages of notes about their sexual habits, concluded “there seems to be no crime too low for these penguins”, and saw his findings suppressed for 97 years

To start with, this is happening because the president has targeted a member of Congress as part of a broader explicitly racist hate campaign against Americans of a particular ethnic origin. There's no other way to put it.

We planned a ferry ride today, but the public transport was borked, so went for a neighbourhood walk instead. Realised we could get another view of the local waterhole, so went to check and found both a striated heron and a turtle!

Reminder that "biological sex" is not a thing that exists. It is a legal fiction in every place that refers to it. In the UK, in the equality act, it means "the sex that was written on your original birth certificate." Incidentally, it doesn't matter if that's due to a clerical error.

Basically AI allows software engineers to produce shitty code *faster* and in higher volumes which increases the amount time spent on code reviews and revisions nullifying the productivity gained from producing the code in the first place.
