After the Civil War, many in Congress invoked education to transform white Southern prejudices & secure republicanism. They abandoned that vision to pursue superficial feelings of reconciliation. We still live with the consequences. Learn more in my book: www.upress.state.ms.us/Books/A/Abse...

I don't know that there is a template or a "secret sauce" or a clear-cut lesson to take from this. But if there is one it's the idea of treating social media as the hostile territory that it is, of actually acting like you are a participant in propaganda warfare and not like a consumer.

Echoing this. Went to Southeastern Illinois College for two years. Incurred no debt, took classes of comparable quality to my undergrad classes, and my degree is identical to any other grad of my 4-year uni. Incredible value & helped me recover from an abysmal high school GPA. Now a tenured R1 prof.

If you don’t have the existing academic record to go to a four year school you have options: community colleges exist in every major urban area and also plenty of backwaters that allow transfers to a four year degree that is ultimately indistinguishable from if you started at a four year degree

The community college system is the most overlooked mechanism of social mobility in this country. Arguably they are the single US institution that comes closest to fulfilling our purported value of equal educational opportunity.

Once mass spam texts were made legal, younger donors vanished, leaving a grassroots fundraising machine that subsists on squeezing vulnerable seniors, some of whom give hundreds of times a day. It’s a horrific model. Consultants get generationally wealthy, and the party hollows out its future.

Jake Grumbach@jakemgrumbach.bsky.social

We found that as of right now 73% of your campaign donation goes back to the consultants and vendors (!!!), four times more than just 20 years ago. Only 13% to ads. Even I was shocked.

one thing about my adhd I wish people understood: it’s not that I’m not ‘detail-oriented.’ Indeed I obsess over details because I’ve screwed up so many things by overlooking them.

Part of how ADHD fuels depression is by reinforcing (always) that no matter how hypervigilant I am about the details, no matter how much time or energy I pour into meticulous plans, I’ll always overlook things. I am constitutionally, fundamentally a screwup, in my bones.

Pretty nearly the whole actual point of getting white college students to go to Mississsippi for Freedom Summer was to draw national media attention

"The Jews who went to Mississippi didn't take selfies and post tweets." Okay, but honestly, if tweets had been a thing in 1961, many of them probably would have done.

THEY ARE NOT POWERLESS TO STOP HIM! Go back to Washington, stand on the steps of the Capitol and demand Johnson and Thune recall the House and Senate, and impeach him. THIS IS HOW IT IS SUPPOSED TO WORK! THERE IS LITERALLY AN INSTRUCTION MANUAL! (It's called the Constitution.)

Republican lawmakers are incensed about Trump's dismissal of Ukraine — and powerless to stop him. That frustration hit a new peak on Monday as they sought to address Trump’s decision to purchase Russian diesel, waive sanctions on Moscow, and potentially stop sharing intelligence with Ukraine.

Sabotaging American foreign policy in order to help win an election is one area where Trump genuinely isn't an aberration. Nixon sabotaged peace talks with Vietnam and Reagan backchanneled to prevent Carter from getting the hostages in Tehran released. A long-standing Republican tradition of treason

the big media effort over the next 2 years will be to promote Vance as a different, more reasonable and moderate guy than Trump. You can already see this in the "leaks" about how Vance secretly opposes the Iran War, attempting to position him, absurdly, as an anti-war candidate for 2028

One thing you learn from reading the academic literature on parental estrangement is that it's rarely *just* about events from childhood. Most adults are willing to reconcile with their problematic parents as long as they can acknowledge their mistakes and own up to them. A lot of them refuse.

Michael Hobbes@michaelhobbes.bsky.social

Every article has the same premise: Young people are characterizing their normal, happy childhoods as abusive and going "no contact" with their parents over minor disagreements. Every article also, late in the text, blithely acknowledges that this premise is false. www.nytimes.com/2024/07/14/h...

strategic political capture of the court has, for 40 years, been a one-way ratchet. among other things, this has inculcated a sense among conservatives that they can act with virtual impunity. showing them that their opponents will play hardball is a necessary first step toward a better status quo.

It sounds like a trite 19th century observation, but character matters in a republic. Part of our crisis today is an electorate whose only heuristic for character is sycophantic loyalty. By framing his answers in terms of how he judges character, AES is teaching the electorate this essential skill.

Anat Shenker-Osorio@anatosaurus.bsky.social

The ability to answer this well says everything about running as an empathetic three dimensional being in order to enact an agenda with and for people as opposed to running as an amalgam of poll-tested points to win simply for sake of doing so.
