Fun locator map in Montparnasse station, Paris. Turn the whole thing and the map spins to be oriented toward the way you’re facing.

Me: dead at 16 (blood clot) My wife: dead at birth (preemie) My sister: dead at 30 (appendix) —if infectious disease didn't get to us first Now is the best time in human history to be alive, because a lot more of us get to 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆 alive!

It's interesting when you ask people to imagine what their life would be like if they were transported historically to the past. Some people seem to assume they'd be in the relatively well-off 1-2% and it would go fine for them. Meanwhile I just assume I'd be a secluded female peasant.

Non-bummer alternate answer: if I'm getting transported anytime from ~1200 to 1750, please send me to Poland-Lithuania 🙏

Data sniff check: do we think the average 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 is walking nearly two miles a day in Orlando and over a mile per day in Anaheim? Here's a hint 🐁🏰 I think this chart reveals more about the quality of Streetlight's pedestrian data than it does about American walking habits...

NEW: The Grand Illusion Cinema lives! The single-screen movie house that'd been in Seattle’s University District for more than 50 years before closing in January 2025 is coming home. It will be now taking over at the Varsity Theatre 📽️ My story @seattletimes.com: www.seattletimes.com/entertainmen...

Sara Nelson's new websites are a grim example of what happens when an organization replaces human artistic/design judgment with AI. Let an LLM set the visual defaults for your website, and the results will look like ClaudeSlop™️ guaranteed!

Close now features a subscription for power users! One new feature solves the 2-body problem: "what neighborhoods are walkable AND commutable for both of us?" This is about two years in the making and I'm pretty proud of it. Check it out: close.city

Took an unexpected lime scooter from Roosevelt Station to Pike Place Market 🥲 some days the Link tests you

Happy impromptu "drive everywhere day" to those people that would have taken public transit today but didn't due to the light rail issues. The traffic was noticeably worse downtown than normal.

Everyone is rightfully mad about the Kavanaugh letter, but I'm equally amazed by the gall to call yourself a "former public school teacher" based on what looks like one year of TFA

The endorsement of Brett Kavanaugh clerk and Brett Kavanaugh confirmation supporter Will Dreher over @ronpdavis.bsky.social, who has a strong progressive record, should destroy what little remains of the Stranger's credibility.

Between pedestrians on the street, the architecture, and the streetcar station, it took me a second to realize this wasn't a European city center!

Going to raise my hand and say I definitely underestimated interest in this game. Just watched the Bosnia-Herzegovina match go through Jackson and occidental. It took 15 minutes to clear.

My Chicago-Madison connecting flight got cancelled because of wind, and American tried to rebook me on a redeye through Dallas (😱) but real ones know it's only a 2h bus ride. See you soon #SOTMUS!

Shout-out to fellow cugos.org member Aaron Schechter (transitmapping.net) for his great op-ed in the Urbanist today! It comes with a brilliant interactive map, of course

Holkham beach, Norfolk - I was commissioned by someone to replicate this beautiful beach and all its shades and textures as an aerial embroidery! Lots of grasses, reeds and mud mixed in with the sand. Not sure if the tide in coming on or going out though... More close-ups are in the thread: 1/2

Young people are always told what not to do. But what should you do? Did you know that most public libraries have a Nintendo Switch to use? That parks show free movies at night? That there's a map of pickup basketball games?

Wait, this is extremely cool

We can confirm, this @missedconnections.bsky.social post is true. PBOT uses "rest in red" traffic signal technology to interrupt dangerous driving behavior—such as excessive speeding on wide, open corridors during late night and early morning hours—which contributes to deadly crashes.

Anybody live, work, or otherwise familiar with these light rail stations and interested in helping students by drawing your mental map of the area: Judkins Park, Mercer Island, Wilburton, Spring District? You’d be a huge help to udents in the UW Communities, Environment, and Planning major.
