Not to get all Marxist-y, but this is what happens when people are raised by/exist in a society that divorces products from the workers who create them. I'm so glad there are game news sites that refuse to participate in that alienation, but there's still a long way to go in class consciousness.

Caitie@ghildirthalen.bsky.social

sorry i need to publicly be a hater for a second but what do you mean the giant 230k+ signature save mass effect petition is only about the IP and not the devs that were laid off

Of course there are chuds who explicitly don't care about developers and actively hate them, but most people exist in a cursed space where at best they think "it's a shame what happened to them" and at worst "if they were so good it would be done/they wouldn't be fired" and that sucks so hard.

Those who defend polymarket rely on the theory of people wanting to profit from bad "predictions" to normalise the values. It's a wildly stupid theory, because it assumes there are enough people participating who aren't ideologically captured.

Greg Pak@gregpak.net

The fact that we've agreed to call these gambling sites "prediction markets" furthers their bullshit. They predict nothing and it's a disgrace that news orgs have partnered with them and pretend they have news value. THEY'RE JUST A BUNCHA LOSERS GAMBLING.

When your sources of information are wildly biased, and there are exceedingly few people across the political aisle on your platform, the "predictions" are almost always going to be out of touch with reality.

Obligatory: If you think you have a gambling problem you're not alone; seek help from local help lines and check for any options you have to restrict or exclude yourself from future betting.

We acknowledge that no one has the bandwidth for this, but if it helps: -It’s ‘sleight of hand’ -It’s ‘bated breath’ -It’s ‘lo and behold’ -It's 'buck naked' -It’s ‘brass tacks’ -It’s ‘free rein’ -It’s ‘toe the line'

Last I'll post about this, but Elon Musk disagrees with me. This means I am onto something, and I feel more valid in my opinion than ever.

I do kind of want to see the Epic Star Wars/Marvel game make a total Concord of itself, if only for the headline "The Game No One Made Was Also The Game No One Played"

My favourite thing is they were so lazy they didn't even count the items in their own deal. What a colossal waste of resources just to lose business.

I can't stop thinking how wrong the tech bros have understood creativity and creators. Or even just having hobbies. #erliart

I'm laughing so much I've hurt my diaphragm and I'm going to have to pass out or I'm going to keep laughing. We live in extraordinarily stupid times right now.

So uhhhhhh… Apparently meta's muse "AI" is just straight up doxxing people to strangers on FB marketplace??? This has the potential to hurt so so many people, and I genuinely wonder how long before they roll out a fix for it.

Holy shit who hurt you? Did Marathon, Arc Raiders and Helldivers 2 shit in your bed or something? If the only way to say the game is good is to shit on others uh... Yeah I'm good, hard pass.

Eurogamer@eurogamer.bsky.social

Wardogs has already made more money than Marathon, and its Steam launch momentum is ahead of Arc Raiders and Helldivers 2. https://bit.ly/4j2GMsI

Ireland’s Classic Hits radio station is boycotting Ed Sheeran’s music as well. Also worth noting once again our national TV broadcaster is not broadcasting Eurovision next year because of Israel. If you think the Irish acts and Ireland’s stance is too much then you don’t understand our history 🧵

Alas no - OpenAI, and no doubt all the others, have been engaging in training models in a way that are wildly irresponsible, so they want cover for the slow down on their current frontier models while they work out how to transition to these newer ones. We have so much worse on the horizon.

Comfortably Boo@numb.comfortab.ly

So they realized they're in the gutter, no revenue in sight, operating at a tremendous loss, and suddenly decided to slow down "to save the humanity."

Oh I guess I can uninstall Power wash Simulator 2 now. Fuuuuck that.

Knoebel@knoebel.bsky.social

FuturLab has cancelled its non-Powerwash Simulator title and is laying off 7 employees. Employees were reportedly instructed to not to use the term "redundancy" and refer to those affected as "the leavers." www.gamesindustry.biz/futurlab-cut...

We live in the stupidest timeline. Whatever your thoughts are on AI (read: LLMs, because that's what we're ultimately talking about here) - this shit is just turbo stupid and sharing it as though there's any credibility to the statement shows (again) just how much we've been failed by journalists.

"but all we did is quote him - he's the one making the statement, we're not making a judgement" - yes, you are by sharing it as your headline without responsibly couching it with "claims". It's not hard.

Local harms are quite literally the best reason for forcing things to be reassessed. It's literally the most important reason. Gentrifying "the ends justify the means" doesn't make it a moral good. If you're so desperate to have AI research, do it properly - stop throwing people under the bus.

The Economist@economist.com

There is a respectable argument for slowing down AI research, but it rests on the danger to all humanity of the technology being abused or going rogue—not the local harms of data centres

As someone who spent a lot of time clocking the console and arcade originals... Absolutely not. Pathetic you can't even take a basic moral stance in support of the people who make your hobby a reality.

Eurogamer@eurogamer.bsky.social

Gen-AI controversy aside, after 30 minutes with Crazy Taxi: World Tour, it feels like classic arcade Sega - and it's an absolute blast www.eurogamer.net/crazy-taxi-w...

The Gen X'ers I worked with who did anything like this would proceed to not do their job correctly in any way while bitching and moaning about how shit they felt. Yeah you're so cool, tell me again how cool you are while censoring yourself. Real brain-dead hedonism hours.

Mic Wright@brokenbottleboy.bsky.social

Courtney Love did actual cool shit, she does not need to post Gen X ‘boomer’ memes on her Instagram story.

When people say "AI has zero benefits" they know what they're talking about - they're talking about generative and LLMs. With that said ML is not without deep flaws unless it is rigorously tested and confirmed to minimise biases. Stop trying to smuggle shit we know is ok into the things that aren't.

CONTROL Resonant has gone gold! Get ready to unleash Dylan Faden's paranatural abilities on September 24th. The physical release date for the game has moved October 15th. We need more time to deliver the physical version to you, but rest assured - nothing stays contained forever. #CONTROLResonant

I had the gross misfortune today of delivering for a restaurant that had, on full display, health and safety posters that were AI-generated. Zero need for it to be AI-generated - but they did it anyway. Slop is not only pointless, but also an active threat to safety.

violet allen@blipstress.bsky.social

I have many theories of slop, but my current Theory of Slop is that what makes slop "slop" and not just "bad art" is that slop only ever aims to sate a desire created by past experiences of art rather than to create a new experience to be desired.

No-one asked for these posters - they would have been created by feeding an existing notice, so they're entirely redundant. But, the owner clearly had credits to burn, so "content" with "branding" was made. Congratulations I will literally never eat at your store.

Web developer here - please use an ad-blocker. This isn't a tinfoil "they're tracking you", but a straight-laced "they're tracking you which is burning your network, CPU, memory and general performance".

mtsw@mtsw.bsky.social

motte: I should use an ad-blocker bailey: easily confused and vulnerable elderly people should use an ad-blocker bsky.app/profile/exce...

The argument is that marketing wouldn't need to be so bloated and horrible if we just accepted it and... No? If you give someone space to put an ad they _will_. This is the online equivalent of trickle-down-economics.

I am begging you to talk to people in marketing and have them laugh in your face. The app I work on has no less than 4 different analytics systems in it. That's just the web version. The native app? Lmao. Oh and this is positively lightweight to what I've seen.

How is tech in Germany so bad? Genuinely headache-inducing decisions and wildly slow systems or over-engineered to the point my browser throws a fit. Meanwhile apps/sites in Hungary? Absolute pleasure. Hajrá, Magyarország!
