Replying to @owillis.bsky.social

As someone smarter than me said, the Democrats are the Uvalde cops sitting on their asses while the GOP shot up the school we call America

Yes. The conservative scheme for education is a three-way split: high-priced academies for the children of the wealthy, religious instruction to brainwash the middle class, and a rump of prison-like public schools to discipline the lower class into obedience.

jamelle@jamellebouie.net

the other thing is that conservatives resolutely do not see the purpose of education as providing social mobility but as reifying and deepening existing inequalities of status. they are as hostile to low income students getting admission to elite institutions as they are black ones.

Something very important to figure out before Jan 20, 2029 is whether, when a new President is inaugurated, they will control the computer system at GSA (i.e. doors to federal buildings) and Treasury payments system or if those systems will be somehow in the hands of DOGE cronies

If you feel bad for Natalie Harp, YOU are the problem. Toxic forgiveness. You are the reason Americans forgot how bad Bush was in TWO years.

Most people’s reference frame for “Her” when it came out would have been subconsciously understanding it as a classic drug addiction tragedy wrapped up a light scifi package. Apparently Silicon Valley saw “Her” & thought ’oh this means everyone wants destructive drugs!’ www.wired.com/story/why-no...

Norway sold 12 petrol cars in February 2026. Out of 7,272 new passenger car registrations, 98% were fully electric. Just 67 diesel & 12 petrol cars were registered. Hybrids? Only 66 in total mostly plug ins. More in my new Substack newsletter coming out every 7 days. Sign up here: t.co/In5lBaF2ox

Crazy 98th academy awards stats The 10 best picture films combine for 80 nominations this year, last year BP combined for 70 5 non BP films are multi-nominees with 10 noms; last year that was 6 films with 16 noms 8 films have 1 nom, last year it was 9 films (excluding trad 1-nom categories)

Crazy 98th academy awards stats if You watch only the ten best picture nominees you will also finish EIGHT(!) other categories, I don’t think that has ever happened before, usually the correspondence is 4 or fewer categories perfectly overlapping with Best Picture

Crazy 98th academy awards stats Only 12 films were nominated in the four acting categories But, 10 films were nominated in the leading acting categories It’s pretty unusual to have so few films nominated in acting and also zero overlap in the leading categories.

In Swedish, a word for what you eat to bridge the gap between meals (or while waiting for the main course to cook) is stödmacka. It means "support sandwich." A similar word in Norwegian is ventepølse, or "waiting sausage."

This is the playbook, folks. If you're not paying attention now and doing something about it, then you're going to have to sit down the rest of your life because democracy is being taken away. Do not be quiet in this moment.

Political violence is bad. It usually begets more political violence. Celebrating political violence is bad. It usually encourages more political violence, against various targets. Campus shootings are bad. They make everyone on campus less safe. It's bad that what I wrote here is controversial.

Not many people know this, but all of the major political changes and social movement successes of the twentieth century -- from the New Deal to the civil rights movement to the Great Society -- were achieved because Democratic voters lay perfectly still and never pushed their representatives to act

conservatives/republicans going full on fascist with occupying cities with the military is yet another reminder to NEVER TAKE CONSERVATISM SERIOUSLY. THEIR CRITICISMS AREN'T REAL. YOU CAN'T MEET THEM HALF WAY. THEY AREN'T A SERIOUS IDEOLOGY. THEY CAN ONLY BE CRUSHED, NOT DEBATED. thank you.

There are many complicated explanations for why Dems have spent 50 yrs losing lots of elections, but theres also a simple one: Dems were a majority party for decades when they championed New Deal-ism & they became a losing party when they sided with money & discarded that legacy

Tourism to the U.S. will face two collapses. 1st collapse is immediate of potential tourists on the lower rungs of wealth & less right wing. 2nd collapse is long developing w/ chilling effect tail, it is after remaining tourists return home and receive social/econ consequences for going to the U.S.

Congestion pricing is an unqualified triumph. One of the most immediately, strikingly successful public policies of my lifetime.

The Urbanist@theurbanist.org

“The MTA as a whole is averaging 448K more public transit riders per day this year…The MTA ridership growth since congestion pricing went into effect is almost 50% larger than the total ridership of America’s next-largest subway system.” bettercities.substack.com/p/congestion...

Being a historian, people ask me if I think the US is living through Germany 1933. I answer no, analogies are always imperfect but to me it feels more like Russia 1999: a blatant theft of state assets and liberals in a fugue state, refusing to believe the arc of progress is bending against them.

Imagine DOGE opens your mail and finds your household electric bill. To eliminate this cost, they burn your house down without warning. Then they total up the bills that, as a homeless person, you will never again pay. On its website, DOGE boasts about the money it has saved you.

Back in Obama-times the Dems pre-quit (again) before beginning on an issue. A frustrated friend asked why we never try to win, “because the Dem leaders are jealous of republicans’ country club voters & want their votes, but they hate us & don’t want ours.” I said flippantly, feels truer every day.

Right now Trump’s government is moving at the speed of Covid government, where major changes are implemented in six days (or less); and the media, courts and democrats can only move at the speed of the ACA, where major government changes are implemented only after six years (or more).

There was a lot of important invisible structural reforms in the ACA, but I’m still frustrated that the visible end result for every citizen was “I waited six years for a glitchy website that lets me shop for mediocre overpriced insurance?.” We tried to change the world and settled for HSN.
