This. And if most Americans weren't aware of this in 2019, I'd guess they're even less so now. Public university students were paying for a third of the cost of their education in 2009, and it was up to half by 2019. 2009 wasn't great compared to the 60s-70s, either. www.pbs.org/newshour/edu...

“But if you just vibe code up your entire special snowflake engine your product will be a buggy mess you’ll have to spend forever patching” so like every game that’s been released for the past 15 years but at 1/100th the price?

CA cities that disapprove housing projects are in a world of hurt. New Court of Appeal decision sets up developer lawsuits for damages, at least where state law requires a ministerial permit (SB 35/423, AB 2011, SB 684, and more). Shi v. Palos Verdes. threadreaderapp.com/thread/21141...

Doing the work to deconstruct other’s writing and reconstruct it is what allows you to see holes or structural issues in your own

Without commenting on whether LLM feedback is useful (I certainly wouldn't ever ask a chatbot for that kind of feedback), I want to point out that when it comes to improving your writing, getting editorial notes on your work is distinctly inferior to offering criticism of *other* writers' work.

Another cost/benefit aspect I've been mulling about: say we use AI to develop some scientific software or tool that is orders of magnitude faster than existing tools. It comes with an initial energy /env cost due to AI use, but would sig reduce downstream env cost for scientific computation

Nicholas Mancuso@nmancuso.bsky.social

Its fair game to criticise AI use for its energy costs, but I do think those in the biomedical field leveling those criticisms should consider what environmental impact a -80 has, or of reagent production and delivery. It can help put things into perspective just a touch

Given the shift in media ownership over the Trump era, Democrats REALLY need to learn to ignore media handwringing now. Because I have no doubt their every move for accountability will be attacked from every possible angle.

it continues to be funny to me when i hear people go "but obviously these dsa types just want to destroy the market and implement stalinism" while, meanwhile, they are actually *more* pro-market than the mainline democrat incumbents they're challenging

With agentic tools it's quite easy to spin up new scientific software that is robust, usable, and well documented. In the past I would argue these "results" warrant a software manuscript, particularly if lead by a trainee. However now it's not clear to me if publication is a worthwhile route.

To be a bit more concrete, I had an idea, asked chatgpt if it pans out or had been done before (yes/no) got it implemented, verified etc in a few days of agent if work. If a trainee jad done this, sure short manuscript route. But in the absence of that a blog post seems like a better use of time

Trainees have scientific projects that come with software, but these sort of "one off" software tools seem like not a great use of anyone's time for publishing, where a blog post may be better suited? Especially true if it was the result of a pi interacting with agents over the course of a few days.
