Why I Left Academia Writing personal essays is easier than teaching, grant-writing, or getting research articles published. But nobody told me that in grad school my latest for the Chronicle

Evergreen post for anyone telling you "personal responsibility" is the best or sole fix to a structural issue

Dave Karpf@davekarpf.bsky.social

If your response to the data center backlash is "oh no, those poor hyperscalers! People are using inexact data in their arguments against OpenAI and Grok. Everyone should just let them proceed with their buildouts and focus instead on PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY," then you're either a grifter or a mark.

I don’t want to make an account just to buy something. I don’t want to download an app either. I just want to pay for the thing and leave. I don’t want to join the rewards program. I don’t want to get the inevitable email that my information has been compromised.

Also worth noting that The Great Gatsby was only a modest success when it was published, it only became the cultural behemoth it is today during WWII, when the novel was licensed for a "books for soldiers" scheme via the US government. F. Scott Fitzgerald was long gone by that time.

Yeah, the list of 1920s bestsellers is wild. Yes, there is The Great Gatsby....and dozens of books I had never ever heard of.

Here's an important read for today: policymakers are encouraging students to learn trades that are costly to teach, but community colleges and apprenticeships don't have the capacity to meet demand. This sends students to the more expensive for-profit sector, where they take on debt.

wsj.comThey Chose Careers in the Trades and Still Wound Up With DebtAs community colleges and union apprenticeships fill up, more students are turning to pricier training options for blue-collar careers.

How is “viewpoint diversity” not just affirmative action for people with bad ideas

In general, (re)orienting education wholly or chiefly to specific perceived market needs is always going to produce disaster once the near term passes. It also eviscerates institutions that might otherwise help people weather change, intellectually and in other ways

As somebody exiting the technology industry, it really does annoy me that for years and years and years we were all told "learn to code, learn to code, become agile, you should be working in tech" and then that all got farted out the window as soon as they thought they could minimise costs.

Happy birthday to the Washington Metro, which opened 50 years ago today with service on 4.6 mi of Red Line between Rhode Is. Ave & Farragut N. System now serves 130 mi. The DC Metro shows that, with good planning & enough investment, the public sector can succeed & build something extraordinary.

Yeah idk, I think the oscars shook out reasonably! Biggest snubs were in casting (anything other than obaa or hamnet was more deserved) and international feature (tsa deserved to be canonized). And I wish supporting actor had gone differently, but I get it!

I think this was a year with a lot of impressively thorny movies (tsa, marty supreme, obaa, and sinners), and it makes me optimistic that they're resonating commercially and critically.

I taught a class on “hope” last year and the few theorists who’ve written on it all point out that hope is the harder choice - that despair is easy and too often fashionable

Aaron Ross Powell@aaronrosspowell.com

Too many people on Bluesky think that relentless expressions of despair are a sign of intellectual sophistication.

While this is kind of cute, the reality is that if you buy into the idea that being surveilled while protesting places you at grave risk, they have already won. Stop trying to defeat their surveillance - you can't. Realize that the goal of surveillance is to scare you, so you obey in advance!

It is, but an obsession with opsec is a real hindrance for activists. If you're out there confronting ICE, I assure you they can figure out who you are if they really wanted. The key is to not do anything illegal (taking or sharing video is not) and to understand there's safety in numbers.

pophouse@pophouse.bsky.social

seems riskier to take the video than to share it

One point that deserves more emphasis: fascism isn’t only immoral and unjust -- it’s *operationally worse* It degrades how societies think, learn, and coordinate. 🧵

Am I perturbed by the increasingly common Christmas tradition of everyone binging holiday-themed gas leak cinema from stresmers? Yes. Am I gleefully watching Love Actually again? You betcha.
