"more votes than any Toronto mayoral candidate ever" how do you like them apples
Brad Bradford being graceful in defeat. Nice concession speech about the city coming together. His kids are cute. Impressive campaign really. Got more votes than John Tory did in 2022. But Olivia Chow got more votes than any Toronto mayoral candidate ever.

As we all know, the only true documentaries are Andy Warhol's EMPIRE and Russell Mulcahy's HIGHLANDER.
“'You Can See Everything' is a hilarious, thrilling, fascinating, beautiful piece of art. What it certainly is not is a documentary, and it’s dangerous to pretend that it is,” writes Theranos whistleblower Tyler Shultz. https://bit.ly/4Bk2nDJ
God, he's good.
El-Sayed on Trump's cognitive tests: "I went to medical school...In my neurology unit, I would have to give that MoCA exam...The only people that you give a MoCA test to are people who you worry may have cognitive deficits. By definition, if you're taking one of those tests, something's wrong."
"El Sayed dug up the buried implication of Tommy's question, held it up for all to examine, and then, one shovelful after another, question by question, buried Tommy in the hole left behind."
Today I wrote about Abdul El Sayed's encounter with a Christian fascist named "Tommy," and the fine art of digging up the shameful things fascists bury under their accusations, exposing them for what they are, and then burying their lies in the hole left behind. www.the-reframe.com/taking-our-c...

I appreciate that Oliver spent his whole show basically testing the Ellisons tolerance for dissent.
This week’s main story is about how more and more white nationalists, antisemites, and Nazi sympathizers seem to be integrating into the Republican Party, how some of them are currently running for office, and how old you can be for JD Vance to consider you “a very young boy.”

"Great news! You're booked for six tables for 7:45pm on Blursday the 35th"
How do you feel about someone setting up an automated process that hammers restaurant-reservation websites to gain an advantage in booking a table? The NY Times thinks this is not only acceptable; it's a "killer task" for AI, worth paying $100/month. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/25/t...

What's that? A special Sunday afternoon edition of SHINY THINGS built on cult classics and a recent genre picture that might someday become one? Why didn't I make that connection when I wrote it? What's wrong with me? Anyway, go read it.
For the curious, Jim Hemphill wrote a piece on the different cuts for Indiewire earlier this month.

Olivia Chow could've run a campaign focused on standing up to Queen's Park — she didn't, and now we have to live with the potential consequences, writes senior editor John Lorinc. @johnlorinc.bsky.social #TOpoli spacing.ca/toronto/2026...
The other implication of his run -- that Toronto has slid into flith and chaos because we don't have a white man at the helm -- is the vilest dog-whistling shit, especially since Chow is still working to clean up the mess John Tory and the Fords left behind.
Crime is down. Toronto is objectively a safe place. Why does Bradford want us scared? www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/artic...
I truly don't know. My family owned a movie theater when I was a kid and I can't remember NOT being at the movies. This probably explains why I never had a chance at a normal life.
First film you saw at the cinema. The real first one, not the pretend one you tell people! Mine: The Empire Strikes Back, 1980, Wigan. We were near the front and I can still remember how massive the AT-ATs looked, looming over us out of the snow :) Film, year, where, and whatever stuck with you.
This is a fantastic idea and whoever came up with it should be given the key to the city.
Once Upon a Time in Harlem is a film that every New Yorker should see — and this weekend you can, at no cost. We partnered with the filmmakers to offer free screenings this Saturday and Sunday at the Lincoln Center, Film Forum, and Magic AMC in Harlem. Go to on.nyc.gov/seeharlem to reserve a seat.
I mean, a four-hour documentary that recaps the stuff we already know versus three hours with Nathan Fielder trying to peel the weirdest onion you'll ever see ..
There's apparently a conspiracy theory that the Musk doc is being buried by its new owner (a guy who has done anti-Musk work & financially backs ProPublica) since it got removed from a bunch of theaters but I think the more obvious answer is that it expanded too much and no one went.
A pleasure to be @brentbambury.bsky.social's very last interview for DAY 6, talking about the wonders of WILDWOOD.
