“The internet is a store but it used to be a library” hits me like a slug to the chest

When I was writing this post, I was struggling the entire time. Deleted it several times, was filled with grief and dread at doing what I knew needed to be done. But when I hit Post, I was absolutely flooded with relief. I know it's the right thing to do, even if I'm going to miss it.

Two of our Friday group are traveling, so we're tossing around ideas for interim games. It was a tossup between Mythic Bastionland and Pasion de las Pasiones, so we're considering merging them. "Chivalry of the Chivalrous," comin' atcha. Knights questing and wooing one another. LETS GOOOOOO

I'm going to keep saying this until it's rote practice: If you are in official connection with let alone in charge of an archive of data, if is your professional & moral responsibility to secure that archive, as a backup or otherwise, against just such an emergency, so we're not Hoping some kid did.

Incredible. When E—n M—k & his crew obliterated USAID in a weekend, they deleted a vast trove of publicly-funded knowledge: the Development Experience Clearinghouse. A Canadian high school student (!) happened to have downloaded the entire thing for a project. AidData has now posted it for all.

Last year, I thought about saving for a trip to Boston to tour historical and Fallout 4 locations and maybe do videos comparing them. Then I realized that can never happen because I can't have more than $2000 at a time, and no trip is going to cost less than that. I can never vacation again.

Wait, people don't know this? Yeah. It doesn't auto-save unless you save to cloud. I hate this timeline. Share to save someone many tears from lost work.

Heather Burns@heatherburnstech.bsky.social

The most terrifying enshittification I've discovered has been learning that Microsoft Word documents no longer auto-save if you are not saving them to one of their own proprietary cloud services. I'm slapping control-S like it's 1999.

I was reminded in a conversation tonight that the aspirational element of superheroes is using your power for good, to help others, but that some mistake it as the aspiration to simply have power.

There's a website called Science Fiction Weekly (dot com) that appears to have reprinted a bunch (maybe all?) of Daily Science Fiction's stories. They claim they did so with author permission. They are lying. If you were published in DSF, maybe join a bunch of us in sending takedown notices?

i’ve seen nothing to suggest that andrew tate is secretly gay and claiming that he is is no different than maga claiming that every mass shooter is secretly trans a lot of straight cis men hate women. stop deflecting from that problem by making shit-tier jokes about queer ppl.

Isn't it weird that this week a currently sitting president had to pay a woman MILLIONS of dollars for *raping* (and defaming) her—and the media has forgotten all about it? There was a time that this would have been the ONLY story—until the rapist was driving from office.

This morning in Biddeford, Maine, a 26-year-old man said goodbye to his wife and daughter and left for work. Moments later he was dead, shot in the head by ICE agents, the second man ICE has killed in six days. ICE is killing our neighbors. ICE cannot be reformed. Abolish ICE.

Replying to @mayor.nyc.gov

For too long, many young children with disabilities had to travel across the city to get the education they deserve. Now, they won't have to.  This is just the beginning. Our administration won't stop until every child has what they need to grow.

Yeah, I don't know if people who didn't live through the '80s know just how responsible the Reagans are for where we find ourselves now:

The older I get the more I realize what utterly execrable people the Reagans were. Take, as just one example, Nancy Reagan's "Just Say No" anti-drug campaign. It's hard to think of a worse response to the very real problems of drug addiction and overdose. Serious "let them eat cake" energy. 1/?

One thing I've started doing as part of my Strong Start (per the Lazy DM style of game prep) is created a set of In Media Res Prompts. These are questions I ask, and players volunteer their character for. Of course, the last person to volunteer gets stuck with the last situation. 1/?

It not only immediately puts the players into the mind of the situation, but it also creates some minor stakes, having them volunteer for a bad situation or set-up. It feels like we've just joined them in the middle of a fight, a fire, or a pastoral evening in town.

You can also put some of the worldbuilding of it all onto the players (who again, are volunteering for specific prompts), like "Who is the person you're gambling against at the dingy tavern, and why are they convinced you are cheating?" Their answers say something about them and the NPC.

Starting in the middle of a disaster, I might ask questions like "With the shaking of the earth, you realize that the roof of the structure you're in is about to fall in on top of you and the others there." Or a combat might be "These bandits got one over on you. What trick did they use?" 2/?
