Lots of #undergroundmaths today. Some functions with Composing Gets me Nowhere twice and a nice 1967 AO question on trig identities and equations. #MathsToday #ALevelMaths

For new and aspiring academics. Do not drink the AI Kool-Aid. Do not look for shortcuts. Do not skip the scholarship part of scholarship. The struggle is part of the training. Stay human and you will have a massive advantage in the future when (not if) the AI bubble bursts.

"For some reason the Americans wouldn't touch it." The UK's Ocean Software, though, happily turned an Oscar-winning film about the hell of war into a hit computer game. And the conflicted critical responses it got are fascinating. New post on Platoon, the game: www.superchartisland.com/platoon

At just about every level of society, on a like for like basis the English (with a relatively low life expectancy for Western Europe) comfortably outlive the Americans. Why? The NHS, yes, but also better food and workplace safety standards, a stronger welfare safety net, less reliance on cars etc.

The last three sub-parts on AQA AS FM P1 on geometry of complex numbers got an average of 0.1 marks each. That's to 1sf so maybe even lower. I don't see the point in them setting questions that almost no-one is able to answer. Mostly very good papers though.

Sam Neil has so many great performances that it feels almost reductive to focus on one scene. Except it's one of the most iconic scenes in movie history and all of it, The groundbreaking CGI, the sweeping John Williams score *doesn't* work without the authentic joy and wonder of Neill's performance

Record numbers for A level Maths this year, just short of 110,000 (still No 1 by a long way, 3.9% up on last year) - and record numbers for A level Further Maths, topping 20,000 for the first time ever (an increase of 8.6% on last year)

There is a reliable way for a student to get higher predicted grades. Work hard throughout the year and treat revising for mocks as you would the real exams. Teachers have seen hundreds of kids who say "I didn't really try for the mocks, but I promise I will pull it all together". They don't. Ever.

Keir Starmer's response to Nigel Farage at PMQs just now was probably the most powerful and eloquent I have seen him in the Commons. The full answer is worth reading.

The BMJ is one side of a war that is nothing but a total waste of everything (science, medicine, clinical, patient safety, time) where ME is concerned. But journalism is like that in "Britain".

Favorite Star Trek Actor in a Non-Star Trek Role Avery Brooks in 'American History X' An incredibly powerful movie, and while much has been said about what a powerhouse Edward Norton is in this film, Avery Brooks delivers a supporting role performance that felt truly unforgettable to me.

Give me your favourite Non-Trek performance from a Star Trek actor. Every time Brent Spiner showed up on NIGHT COURT was a god damned treasure. Bob Wheeler (and his whole family) was a gift us all.

People who vote for Reform may believe they are giving the establishment a kicking but in fact they are backing the establishment! Farage and his cronies are backed by overseas millionaires and billionaires who wouldn’t dream of paying their taxes in the UK. He’s on their side not yours!

In Carlo M. Cipolla’s brilliant book, The Basic Laws of Human Stupidity, he argued that it's impossible to define the percentage of stupid people in circulation. That's just changed because America has given us a number.
