Just saw a video that, out of nowhere, took a swing at IGN by posting the Cuphead tutorial fail clip. Problem is, that wasn't IGN. It was Venturebeat. Which really tells you a lot about the weird axe-grinding gamers do.

"Don't use purple in the UI. Purple is not a military or immersive color" Will always take the cake for me. The phrase "Immersive color" still haunts me

If you see this, please tell me the worst/most baffling bit of creative feedback you've ever recieved. Mine is still the time somebody told me my aliens had names that were too alien. Not that they were unpronounceable, just that they didn't sound enough like human names.

Man. First level of bond is a masterclass. Simultaneously starts the story in a surprising place, tutorialises, reassures the hitman nerds like me that we’ll be doing a little non linearity, and makes me love the guy out the gate. Sold.

the best adaptational choice in first light is that their version of Q is a gentleman dandy in a cravat who teaches bond how to tie his ties and wear a tux. i love bond's gay dad

First Light knows exactly when to be funny, exactly when to be serious, exactly when to deliver the right character beats. It every bit lives up to the films in this manner, and it does so consistently for five, ten times as long. Our review: https://bit.ly/49oQRL0

I’m only a few hours into 007: First Light (review code went out very late) but I *love* it so far. Delightful mashup of Hitman and Uncharted, with impressive storytelling chops. Been a minute since I’ve been this into a triple-A game. And I’ve never even seen a James Bond movie

Happy ‘preordered first light and didn’t realise they’d get it a day early’ day to all who celebrate. Cramming a work day in before we hit 3pm.

Fond memories of the first enemies in Sunless Skies being a gray box with googly eyes and "enemy" written on it. Said placeholder ended up being used for pretty much every test. The parallax system? Started as a stack of googly eye boxes fading into the mist of the high wilderness.

Placeholder assets in a game should look obnoxiously temporary, so obvious that no one would mistake it for the final asset. In past games we've used the doge dog (rip) as an icon, hot pink versions of characters, our CEO's head, etc. If you use a temp asset that seems passable, it may stay there.

this is basically half-life 1 if it was three hours long and everyone was scottish and pissed off

3. Still Wakes The Deep Absolute steal for a great narrative focused horror game, with perhaps some of the best voice acting I've ever heard in a game. Seriously incredible atmosphere as well.

The audio equivalent of this is using cheap TTS for placeholder VO. First game I worked on the audio system would TTS missing sound files from a script. But it would do this for ALL files so you'd hear this flat robot voice going "Cheering", "Explosion" or "Sound of applause"

see? here's the thing. A lot of people are like, the earth is fucked, it's beyond salvation, it's hit the tipping point, but time and time again we see that if we just fucking fixed the problem, it rebounds so incredibly fast. Imagine what could be done if people actually cared

Anyone got a link to that "Gaming Discourse Calendar" tweet/post with all the usual games arguments scheduled out? Some friends are starting to argue about games difficulty and want to check if they should be arguing about the definition of indie instead.

societies typically talk about human cognition as working similarly to whatever is seen as the latest and greatest technology. that’s why we currently describe the brain as a roguelike deckbuilding game about characters making their way up a spire

Just noticed that Remnant 2 (complete with all the DLC, which integrates seamlessly) is at its lowest price yet. £10/$14. Also the first game going for half that. Hugely replayable Souls-ish shooters, even better in co-op. Also secretly the closest we've had to a Dark Tower game series.
