And all it took was incentivising the purchase of new electric cars, whose manufacturer pollutes more than keeping existing petrol cars on the road, but as long as the pollution isn't here, right?

"But, as shown by the post mortem carried out by the eminent physician Dr William Harvey, the change in diet, with rich wines, and the pollution of the City were too much for Old Parr and he died within a few weeks of arriving in London." www.westminster-abbey.org/abbey-commem...

westminster-abbey.orgThomas Parr | Westminster AbbeyThomas Parr, from Shropshire, lived for 152 years and 9 months through the reigns of ten monarchs and was buried in Westminster Abbey by order of King Charles I.

A new late night venue (no planning permission) appealing to a car culture has opened on corner of our sleepy road in W12. Power cars race up and down all night. Others park up with engines idling, while the occupants eat. The emissions must be terrible. Labour council unable/unwilling to intervene.

Thank-you - London’s air is soooo much better. My late mum coughed constantly, the doctors said it was the pollution. The air is noticeably better for future generations. Can you sort the lack of cycling infra now please! 😉

When I was a kid, if you blew your nose after spending the day playing outside, your snot would be grey. We had to wash our faces every evening or the pillows would get stained. This is a win.

As a Londoner, I definitely notice there's less car pollution. Congestion charge made a huge difference as have electric vehicles - great not to be breathing in petrol fumes when cycling in traffic and cotton wool not black with soot when I clean my face.

Cool — congratulations! Will you do the same for indoor air? You know, because #CovidIsAirborne, and #FluIsAirborne, and #MeaslesIsAirborne, and #RSVisAirborne, and #VirusFreeAir is not only entirely doable, but also has hugely positive externalities. 👍🙏🤞

This is great because air pollution is a serious threat to health. As the article notes, everything from affecting birth-rates to dementia. It’s just a pity that really unsafe levels of air pollution that still exists for many was not stopped long ago.

Now as a founder of Liberty call out Starmer's abuse of public office and speak up for the up to 200+ year NHS waiting lists for trans women and girls. Speak up for the cover-up of trans kids who died from suicide because of Wes Streeting.

More air cleanup work to come with Trump's Iran war with the horrible pollution and environmental degradation Trump is causing. The trump netanyahu assaults are global. Air flow is not static.

No longer in London but remember running along the Thames back in 2004 and struggling to breathe. Also remember cycling from West Hampstead to Hammersmith and sleeve was caked in soot when I wiped sweat from forehead as I got to work. Couldn't have been much worse. Glad it's on the mend.

Great news. Now, attention should turn to air quality in many of the London Underground stations, especially particulates. Several times I've come home and found what looks like soot when I blow my nose.

A lot of the muck in the Underground is dust from train brakes. New trains will help as they have regenerative rather than friction brakes which reduces the amount of dust (and heat) dumped into the tunnels.

For a policy that is designed to raise zero money eventually (subject to compliance)… they not half make out like it’s excessive 🫠

I get it for those who struggle with the purchase price of a very basic runaround but it's a serious health issue. Loads of kids were struggling with respiratory issues in London the numbers of whom have dropped dramatically since the introduction of ULEZ.

As with any policy designed to improve lives. Some people will be unhappy about the change, sometimes for £ reasons, sometimes because they don’t agree with the change. I remember smokers kicking off when they made it illegal indoors. Benefit>Sacrifice

For you whippersnappers too young to know about that they died of carbon monoxide poisoning caused by the smoke from domestic coal fires but there weren't so many cars around then. Cars also produce carbon monoxide from their exhaust.

As it was explained to me in undergrad Environmental Chemistry, there were 3 still days (either no wind, or not strong enough wind to clear the smoke) and 3,000 people died. Parliament was closed. This forced the writing of the UK's first Clean Air Act.

I agree with ULEZ but the Mayor should've gone to the neighbouring counties to proactively improve public transport between Outer London and the neighbouring towns as ULEZ expanded. There are so many gaps in the bus service around the fringes of London that unfortunately make driving necessary.

Where I live despite being only 2 miles from the London border, only 1 bus an hour after 7:30pm for a whole town of 50000. This is despite a frequent rail service till Midnight. As for lighting, it's very poor, can barely see who is walking down the street until they are next to you!

Thank you for resisting all the propaganda and vested interest groups trying to turn anti-pollution measures into a grievance narrative. This will ultimately save lives and make London and its surroundings a nicer place for everyone to live.

And yet I heard a posh English woman on the tube saying to her American friend, just as I was getting off (or I'd have asked her why), 'Sadiq Khan is the worst thing that ever happened to us'.

Any Labour posts on fb get the full anti Labour treatment - rude, insulting, abusive. Can't resist an occasional swipe. Most don't reply back. Most are from AI generated accounts / bots. There a few posts from real people. I report a few. Meta has much cleaning up to do.

The US is reportedly preparing to pay nearly $1bn to TotalEnergies for cancelling two offshore wind leases. Not to build clean energy. To cancel it — with TotalEnergies committing to gas infrastructure in Texas instead. As @MegaWattXinfo put it: "Ideology is expensive."

Superb work. A cleaner, better future. I wonder how many people will avoid respiratory or other medical problems in future because of this achievement?

Not to mention noise pollution for those of us who live in (wide) vicinity. It’s a joke that there’s a 50mph speed limit on the motorway that runs past Heathrow

Mr.Mayor,we salute you in your efforts to play your part in rejuvenating the London area and making it a far healthier place to live and visit.Your critics on the right are strangely quiet and many who described London as being unsafe and fled to the UAE,have quietly returned for their own safety.

In Pittsburgh, you went to work with an extra shirt because the pollution was so bad it would stain your clothes. They fixed it. One of the great lakes was so polluted it would catch fire. They fixed it. Auto graveyards once dotted the American landscape until Ladybird Johnson said get rid of them.

Where does 193 years come from? The average life of a car is somewhere around 15 years, so every vehicle will have been replaced 12 times over that time. ULEZ has no doubt improved air quality, but 193 years makes no sense.

The thing I really notice about London skies is that I can see far more stars than I ever could. I have no idea if cleaner air is contributing to that, but the difference in numbers of visible stars is really clear to me.

I know people who say "It will never(!) work" about the expected effects of a proposed climate change action. Every single time they're proven wrong. It doesn't mean they were lying. They just had a poorly informed opinion.

Also, the fact that not driving cars around accommodates people with asthma better reminds me of Wally from Pokemon, where he moved to a town that had air particulates blown away from Verdanturf and recovered nicely. I wish that lesson was taken seriously - less particulates helps everyone.
