Kamala Harris: I think that going in the direction of impeachment is not a good idea. I was in the Senate for the last go-round, and the votes aren’t there. I think after the election, we all have to just also agree that our attitude has to be to get stuff done…

Look, last time Arab turnout spiked, they got a seat in the coalition which brought Bibi down (for like ten minutes). If we actually see historic high Arab turnout this year, then I feel pretty optimistic that they'll have an even stronger influence over the incoming government.

Look, I know that Eisenkot objectively fucking sucks (and that attacks on Tlaib are unfair). But I think too many skeeters today are falling into the trap of dismissing the fact that Bibi losing power IS going to tangibly save lives, even if it won't save ~enough~

Maybe the Israeli center-right ends up strong enough to keep Ra'am out. Maybe Ra'am ends up strong enough to force its way in. Maybe none of this matters cause the coalition will completely fracture and fall apart after a mere 3 months. We just don't know.

I know a lot of people who follow, even loosely, this election know about the "Eisenkot says there won't be Arab parties in his coalition" story and this contributes to the broad sky consensus of "they're all the same."

But I would like to proffer that there not being Arab representation in the coming coalition is not yet a foregone conclusion — especially if it ends up being the case that Ra'am, which is willing to sit in the coalition, pulls even more seats than they did in 2022.

a) American Liberal Zionists like to claim that the problem is "just Bibi," and the problem is absolutely NOT *just* Bibi, and removing Bib will not magically bring Democracy to I/P.

b) Bibi is still a ~unique~ problem and a person who personally contributes to mass death and the immiseration of countless people; there is no person in Israel who is as good at doing so as Bibi Netanyahu is.

Hot take, but I think it's good that Arab turnout this year is the highest it has ever been in Israel (where Palestinians with Israeli citizenship have historically boycotted coalition politics). This is the closest we will get to meaningful change in Israel for at least the next four years.

You can do the same thing, buying a house and borrowing against it—ha ha, just kidding, normal people get taxed annually on their wealth via property taxes, the "you can't tax wealth, the economy will collapse!" rule applies solely to the super-rich.

Steven T. Dennis@steventdennis.bsky.social

For the fabulously wealthy, paying taxes is pretty much optional. They can borrow against their vast wealth, which is mostly an untaxed capital gain, without paying taxes. When they die, the capital gain goes to zero. And loopholes exist to bypass the estate tax too.

The ADL in general, and Jonathan Grenblatt in particular, makes me ashamed to be Jewish much more than any antisemite ever has.

It's well-documented that the president maintained a years-long friendship with the world's most notorious child sex trafficker. It might strike you as odd there aren't direct allegations of Trump engaging in child sex trafficking.. except there are. There are SO MANY. They just never get reported!

looked at in longer perspective, it's striking how much this resembles the premodern system of exclusion, rents, and personalist connections, which was--and this part's important--radically worse than the modern system of impersonal rules and general taxation

Boston’s chief planner is a true believer in the San Francisco model, in which you make it impossible to profitably build apartments by-right so developers are forced into a politicized discretionary negotiation with the city, which relaxes the rules in exchange for below-market units.

The average American probably has more direct material interest in the consequences of the Brazilian presidential election than they do the NYC mayoral election, but you will not see MattY complaining about people's "unhealthy strong rooting interests in elections in cities they don't live in."

I just think Matt's wrong about this. We're at a point in our technological development where a ton of problems spill over national borders--if Flavio Bolsonaro burns down the Amazon, that will flood houses in Miami.

I keep reading this framing that Israeli citizens are required to be in Israel physically to cast their vote, and it misses something significant: Israeli citizens in the occupied West Bank are not, in fact, required to be in Israel to vote. Absentee voting for some, but not others.

Folia@foliacivitatis.bsky.social

Absentee voting is not an option for Israelis: they are required to cast their vote in person in their home country. And so Erella Grassiani, an Israeli-Dutch lecturer at the UvA, boarded a flight to Israel to vote in Tuesday’s elections. www.folia.nl/en/actueel/1...

Yet another example of Trump's long history of saying that Jews are "disloyal" or shameful if they do not vote for him or his chosen candidates. According to him, one can only be a real American Jew if they support Israel specifically by voting for him and his picks.

The Bulwark@thebulwark.com

Trump on El-Sayed: "Any Jewish person that supports this guy should be ashamed of themselves. I'll tell you right now, you should never speak to them again. I'm polling at 99% in Israel. I cannot understand how anybody who's Jewish can even think about voting for this guy."

Too many American Jewish organizations will not call out the blatant antisemitism of a non-Jewish president saying that Jews are being "disloyal" if they vote for Abdul El-Sayed. I am so grateful we have this organization that will.

The US is not about to have a free and fair election. The state has put its thumb on the scale to favor the ruling party in multiple ways. It's a mostly free, somewhat unfair election. But still one where the ruling party can be overwhelmed by numbers. Hence the term "competitive authoritarianism."

Asawin Suebsaeng@swin24.bsky.social

It is atrocious we have to operate under this constant credible and explicit threat from one political party, the fact we keep calling it a “free and fair election” needs some light revising
