people prefer the certainty of finality over the lack thereof of an unwritten future

Ned Resnikoff@resnikoff.bsky.social

The thing about the florid apocalypticism you sometimes encounter on this site is that a lot of people are less horrified by literal civilizational collapse than by the notion that our descendents are just going to keep muddling through and in less than a century nobody will remember us.

I think a ton of people mistake energetic talking with being cognitively capable and only think someone is in decline if they stumble on words more

i don't agree at all. the biggest contribution the internet had to our current global reactionary tantrum is speeding up the process. imo without social media we would at best be where we are currently maybe a decade or 2 from now, at worst same pace with different warning signs

William B. Fuckley@opinionhaver.bsky.social

This is a descriptive, not a normative claim: the Chinese strategy of firewalls increasingly looks like the right one. Bribe a few republicans to keep the slop hose on abroad, while tightly controlling what can be used domestically. They won the argument on this particular.

the typical bsky poster has been so thoroughly traumatized by trump's success that they have given up on the idea that the people are sovereign. the default assumption now is that people are bad and have to be guarded against and punished into model citizenry. word for word conservative ideology

i dont like modern social media at all but all getting rid of the internet is going to do is make ICE kidnapping people not happen until the minute its in front of you. nobody has a plan to change the hearts of people, and nobody believes in democracy anymore. just power.

this just reads to me as the biggest culture win conservatives could ever have. by inflicting donald trump on us and exploiting the median voter's civic apathy, the only reason anyone on this website even supports democracy anymore is for its superior material benefits over closed systems

It's important for anyone who wants to be the Democratic nominee for president to outline exactly how they'll use the power of the executive branch to dismantle the conservative legal movement. Which law schools will you attack and which nonprofits will you sick the IRS on?

Jay Willis@jaywillis.net

Even if Trump loses at the Supreme Court, I promise you that opposition to birthright citizenship is already mandatory for any future Trump judicial nominees. The conservative legal movement never treats a decision it dislikes as "settled." It just waits for another shot.

authoritarianism, personalism especially, is an exhausting and dehumanizing environment to live in. it's engineered to be so on purpose because we are ruled by internet trolls. everyone is worried about what will happen next every day, every hour, every minute. im fucking sick of it

Micah@rincewind.run

everything is more inconvenient and expensive, nothing works anymore, goons might invade your city and kidnap you or your neighbors, and there’s a loud asshole forcing you to pay attention to him at all times

european states had trouble weaning off russian fuel when they invaded ukraine and regularly send immigrants on boats to their deaths, making me wonder if wishcasting for US pariah status is out of some kind of resentment for the security umbrella's power imbalance

did we consider britian & france forever shunned when they invaded egypt? did europe abandon the germans after hitler? the balance of these relationships can change and i expect them to, but total abandonment is not an option no matter how emotionally satisfying it would be for bluesky posters

this is because our government is so racist it would rather drown itself than allow brown people to study in its schools

Michael Clemens@mclem.org

America's status as the top destination for global talent is being shattered. The Administration only just published (!) what happened last summer to international student visa issuances. It's grim. From the indispensable @karinfischer.bsky.social @chronicle.com —> chronicle.com/newsletter/l...

i wouldn't even call them cowards, i genuinely believe they prefer this. i think republican congressmen have hit conservatism's endpoint and only want to be advisors to a decadent aristocracy

We can’t clean up Washington without restoring integrity to the Supreme Court. That’s why I believe we should expand the Supreme Court to 13 justices. And then, institute term limits. Because an appointment to the Supreme Court shouldn’t mean a lifetime lack of accountability.

Fuck Trump. Fuck the puppeteers behind him. Fuck the GOP, especially congressional Republicans and quisling Democrats, who enabled him. Fuck the people who voted for this, and fuck the media for never reporting on him realistically. Fuck them all, for they have truly fucked us and the world.

the reason trump has an unbreakable core of supporters and caught swingy independents in his '24 net is because he is a moron. not a moron whisperer or pretending to be, but a bona fide dumb fuck. in a literal sense he is a dog whistle blowing notes that political hobbyists physically cannot hear

Bluesky has not failed--it's literally just a website. The left, the progressive movement, and American civil society have failed to organize a boycott of the neo-Nazi propaganda website that's central to political media. That's not on Bluesky.

David Klion@davidklion.bsky.social

Literally Zohran and AOC and Bernie all still use “the Nazi site” which makes the tarring of everyone who does as essentially Nazis seem increasingly farcical. It is, unfortunately, still the commons. I’m not happy a Nazi owns the commons either but Bluesky has singularly failed to be an alternative

it's both vindication and defeat because it proves that someone will do it when the situation is that dire but also that it was evelyn normielib who went for it before the social media revolutionary

Silly B Man@lawnerd.bsky.social

No this doesn’t defeat the firebomb a wal mart tweet. It vindicates it! If you gonna firebomb a Walmart you don’t tweet about firebombing a Walmart, you just do it and don’t say SHIT to nobody. Evelyn Normielib is clean on opsec.

serious answer would be to research petromasculinity, but in short there's a vision of physical self sacrifice and nostalgia for a bygone age of manly men working dangerous honest jobs that conservatives love, and renewables violate their ideology

Megaweapon@megaweapon5.bsky.social

Not disagreeing, but how is it not manly to build wind turbines out on the high plains near Amarillo?

a genuine question to ask, how much of america's soft power decline is relative, on account of being culturally based, is due to other countries getting better at projecting their own?

I mean, yes, but let's also just remember what this entire website (Americans in the hemispheric sense and non-Americans alike) was posting about furiously less than two days ago. American soft power may be in decline but pretending it's dead is wishful thinking.

Post your disappointment on the game of life 6 years of my life have gone by and nothing. i have had some inkling of expectations for this since 2014 when i was barely a freshman in highschool

wolfgabe.bsky.social@wolfgabe.bsky.social

Post your disappointment on the game of life I remember as a Tom and Jerry fan getting this on Easter only to be greeted with the most lame ass wannabe Disney plot imaginable

this game really did feel too good to be true. the presentation was really cool and it had everything i grew up with: HB cartoons, cryptids/ufology, and an appeal to my developing taste in RPGs. i really don't have faith that this'll ever come out anymore
