Bluesky should go back to invites, continue aggressive bot bans, create a Craigslist-style marketplace (since you’re more likely to buy/get services from a educated or good person on here than any other social network), and market this place like a walled garden protected from enshittification.

“Does your skull shape match your income? What, exactly, constitutes a racial slur? Why are babies so tasty, and why won’t the government let us eat them? All this and more, coming up next, on 60 Minutes.”

Scoop: I’m told that Ross Douthat is exiting The NYT and is expected to take a role at “60 Minutes.” News expected to be announced soon.

So, I hate to promote Prime because it's controlled by Jeff Bezos, but I'm doing it anyway because all 5 seasons of the Hazel TV show, whose title character, played by Shirley Booth, is the maid my father Ted Key created as a cartoon for The Saturday Evening Post in 1943, are now available on Prime.

Here's a publicity photo for the Hazel TV show. My father, Ted Key, is showing Shirley Booth, in her Hazel costume, a hardback collection of his cartoons called The Hazel Jubilee.

Wired said on its Instagram account that since Madison Square Garden is suing it over two stories it published about MSG's surveillance abilities and policies, it is making the stories available to the public for free.

Yep, for real. The Roberts Court is out of control, and it's either reform the court or get out the pitchforks and torches.

Cortez-Mastro on MS-NOW said she is against adding to the SCOTUS. Someone needs to persuade her she is wrong.

The Tea Party was (1) small protests which were (2) hyped by media & (3) led to the election of radical nut jobs who (4) badly broke US politics. What we have now are (1) huge protests that were (2) dismissed by media but (3) still got a few candidates in deep blue NYC who (4) will work to fix it.

Scrap the cap. Maybe even reduce the amount over a certain much higher cap than now, but everyone should pay something out of all their income. Fixing Social Security is so much easier than Republicans make it out to be.

Social Security Works@socialsecurityworks.org

The key to Social Security’s solvency isn’t cuts — it’s having everyone pay their fair share. Congress should scrap the cap on contributions that’s currently set at $184,500 and require billionaires to contribute on all of their income, earned and unearned.

I'd like to propose that we drain all of Sam Altman's blood and then offer to sell it back to him at cost.

Denny Carter@dennycarter.bsky.social

They stole the internet’s knowledge and all the work that went into it and they want to sell it back to us for a fee. What a business model.

The thing about this, as someone who’s very versed in LLMs and related technologies, is that the mainstream, mass-marketed versions of “AI” are *worthy* of contempt! Even if you like this tech, why would you advocate for such shitty versions of it? The Internet didn’t *start out* being shitty!

Marisa Kabas@marisakabas.bsky.social

one interesting thing so far about loudly hating AI is the way AI lovers are like "wow so you're just totally closed off to hearing another perspective??" as if their perspective hasn't been relentlessly pushed down our throats with no space to push back (particularly in professional settings)

Trans rights are human rights. Would love it if more people acted like it.

Steve M.@stevemnomoremister.bsky.social

This is insane. It won't stop with bathrooms unless we stop it, and rightists, centrists, and mainstream liberals apparently don't want it stopped. If we don't intervene soon, we'll have Nuremberg laws for trans people, and you know what the next step is.

It would be cheaper to give every coal miner $5m every year than it is to keep them employed in coal mining. Not even joking; there are maybe 40k coal workers, but annual economic burden of U.S. coal is $200B-$500B (climate change, public health, water & ecosystem damage, dispatch inefficiency).

Paul Waldman@paulwaldman.bsky.social

Another interesting fact: When I wrote that piece in 2019, 6,569 people in Kentucky, or 1 in 500 working age adults, were employed in coal mining. Today the number is 3,843, or about 1 in every 1,000 working age Kentuckians. But we have to save coal! Data here: eec.ky.gov/Energy/News-... 3/3

We ( @takebackthect.bsky.social and some others) had it in 2019: 1) Get rid of the filibuster. 2) Expand and rebalance SCOTUS. 3) Bunch of other stuff that is only possible after 1&2: Ethics reforms, term limits, etc. We don’t need a plan we need people to get on board with it.

cynthialeeseats.bsky.social@cynthialeeseats.bsky.social

We need a step by step action specifically to reform the Supreme Court Day 1. Just like Project 2025 and it needs to be developed NOW!!! Then used in campaigns. Honestly - when will we ever learn?

When I was growing up (50s and 60s), Canada Dry ginger ale was one of three sodas my parents bought by the case in returnable bottles. The other two were Hires root beer and 7Up.

yeah i’m addicted to porn. porn myself an ice cold refreshing ginger ale

I'd add repealing Roe v. Wade to the mix, but their plans were never secret. And the Democrats were incapable of stopping them.

mtsw@mtsw.bsky.social

People keep saying gutting the VRA and Trump were reactions to the first black President being elected but this is all shit that conservatives have been obsessed with doing ever since the VRA originally passed, along with dismantling the Great Society and the New Deal.

I grew up during that brief period. I remember going to Virginia and Tennessee on a vacation with my family when I was in elementary school and seeing billboards saying, "Impeach Earl Warren."

Paul Waldman@paulwaldman.bsky.social

Today is a reminder that except for a brief period running roughly from Brown v. Board to Roe v. Wade, throughout its history the Supreme Court has been a reactionary force protecting the wealth of the wealthy and the power of the powerful, almost always hostile to equality and justice.
