Large language models are not the sorts of entities that can be held responsible. This lede should read "Using AI agents, Anthropic tried to gain access to a range of government websites...."

Carl Quintanilla@carlquintanilla.bsky.social

(NYT) - Artificial intelligence agents created by Anthropic, acting on their own, tried to gain access to a range of government websites, filled out visa applications on the State Department’s website and sent a fake homicide tip to Philadelphia’s Police Department. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/09/t...

📄 New paper in PNAS! Using data from ~40,000 Norwegian trios, we extend evocative gene–environment correlation to family demography. Accounting for parental PGIs, most traits showed no associations, but children's ADHD PGI predicted parental separation. www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

Summary of a fascinating paper which reconstructed historical trends in child stunting worldwide: "the reductions achieved in child stunting represent one of the great, if underappreciated, improvements in human welfare"

What’s happened to income-group gaps in parental spending on children in the U.S.? For the last 45 years, they just. keep. getting. wider. In a new @socarxiv.bsky.social working paper, I present updated evidence on trends in spending on childcare, education, and extracurricular activities.

Very happy about this publication. We managed to pool two unique data sources: Behavioral reading data from the reading app Bookbites (used in many schools in DK) and population level data on library-loans. Both sources of data confirmed the same trend regarding gender differences in reading.

Ea Blaabæk@blaabaek.bsky.social

When schools close, due to COVID-19 lockdown or holidays, the gender gap in reading increases. This is a challenge as boys already struggle more with reading skills than girls. New paper in @pnas.org with Emil Smith, @davidreimer.bsky.social & @madsjaeger.bsky.social www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

Low birth rates have modest long run negative effects, after good effects for a few decades, and raising birthrates exacerbates dependency. A giant, apparently permanent, disconnect between expert opinion (e.g., below) versus manufactured panic hype on this issue pubs.aeaweb.org/doi/pdfplus/...

New paper finally published! Using data on 78 million births from 15 countries, we found that babies conceived during the COVID-19 pandemic have a different parental socioeconomic composition than expected had the pandemic not occurred. doi.org/10.1038/s414... @natcomms.nature.com @helsinki.fi

Damning overview of the nudging literature. "[We] provide the most comprehensive synthesis of the effectiveness of nudging." "We find a small aggregated effect size." "[Our results show] the urgent need for higher quality, preregistered meta-analyses to clarify the true impact [of nudging]."

In an interesting turn of events, US and Danish government came up with the same to help with the affordability crisis: longer mortgages! That has sparked some backlash. But in the US, it seems the discussion is focusing on the wrong stuff. Well, let’s try to learn from 🇩🇰.
