Just a correction of my reply: What is roughly 3 million people is the difference between the turnout in the first and second round. Just realized that it might've sounded like 19% of the voters meant roughly 3 million people, but it's 30 million actually But yeah, turnout is definitely important

The official numbers this year in Brazil are: 21,08% of the voters didn't show up to vote during the first round of elections and, due to campaigns mobilizing people on the streets and on social media, this number dropped to 19,21% in the second round. For Brazil, that's roughly 3 million people.

Numbers: Lula gained 10.2 million votes between the 1st and 2nd round, while Bolsonaro gained 3.7 million. Overall valid votes cast rose by 4.6 million. There were 9.3 million third party votes up for grabs in the 2nd round.

Further addendum: @nilo.bsky.social who seems to know what he's talking about if you look at his profile, disagrees with my take and has outlined why the result may be down not to turnout but to right-wing swing voters who dislike Lula but distrust Bolsonaro more. bsky.app/profile/nilo...

It's really important to pay attention to the fact that Lula beat the fascist candidate not by compromising and trying to meet fascist voters in the middle, but by sticking to his guns, promising prosecutions for election interference, and mobilising his own voters to turn out in greater numbers.

Flávio Bolsonaro had his passport confiscated by the Brazilian fed police as his brother Eduardo told him to flee to the US. He is tied to paramilitary gangs, is being investigated & lost his legislative immunity when he left the Senate to run for president. paydayreport.com/brazilian-fe...

There are only two explanations for the NYT's habit of presenting GOP operatives and donors as true swing voters: 1. Their reporters and editors are somehow incapable of running a simple Google searches, showing just a staggering level of journalistic incompetence 2. They want to the GOP to win
