A high-turnout election! Bradford got more votes losing than all but 2 winners in Toronto's post-1997 history, and both those cases were incumbents running against relatively weaker challengers. Olivia Chow, of course, won *even more* making her the most vote-getting politician in Canadian history.

my election night hot take is that a bunch of the progressives who won big had such a history of community organizing and knew how to mobilize a deep bench of volunteers, organizing matters so much and you can get started organizing literally anything. talk to people face to face, get organized

I am so confused??? By good news??? I can’t believe we get both Diana and Chiara at council, I can’t believe Stikuts prevailed, I can’t believe Saxe and Fletcher are both out??? Incredible night bsky.app/profile/gold...

Jonathan Goldsbie@goldsbie.bsky.social

Turnover at a glance: Nunziata –> Padovani Perks –> Chan McNally Saxe –> Layton Moise –> Stikuts Fletcher –> Ehrhardt Bradford –> Erskine-Smith Myers –> Chen Other than the loss of Myers, this is going to be a pretty strong Council for Chow.

also like, these numbers look BIG in absolute terms. I’m so curious to see voter turnout stats tomorrow. granted 2023 was a by-election, but that had 720k votes? and 2018’s Tory sweep had 750k total

I am not being funny when I say I stopped looking at my phone for 30 minutes because I was explaining EA to two friends who don’t work in tech and I looked because I got a text that buzzed my watch, this is maybe the first good thing EA has ever accomplished in its life

Toronto I am truly SO PROUD like insert all the caveats yes I’m as much of a #TOPoli junkie as the next person and I am not a Chow sueprfan by any means but WHAT A MARGIN

alright polls are CLOSED, join me in psychotically refreshing results here. Toronto can’t disappoint me worse than anything in 2016 did globally but I’m really really hoping this dumbass city I love to death comes through www.thestar.com/news/gta/cit...

Scarborough apparently still has people in line which accounts for the delay and politically that’s good for me but anxiety-wise it’s REAL BAD

holy shit Diana just took a huge lead 🤞🤞🤞🤞 how fucking incredible would it be to have Chiara and Diana simultaneously at city hall pushing for genuine housing rights

alright toronto, polls are open till 8pm, do not fuck this one up and do NOT vote for the wrong chow for the love of god, olivia is #9

guys we can't fucking do this shit, what the absolute fuck

I just want to name that people overcame this. Even against a stacked deck, the good fight is worth it. Win or lose, it's worth it. And sometimes the good guys win.

Bolsonaro-friendly mayors appear to be sabotaging public transport on Election Day. Buses aren’t running in Lula-friendly areas, flights and ferries mysteriously canceled. Traffic lights have gone out and people’s power cut in Salvador, indigenous people’s travel restricted

normally I flip over to my “only canadians, mainly torontonians“ bsky list to get a break from the unrelenting bleakness of the all-american-politics-all-the-time-ness of the main feed, but the canadian side is also pretty goddamn bleak right now

In the last 3 years, Bradford has stood in the way of making Toronto a more affordable and liveable city. Please look at his voting record, and vote accordingly on Monday.

Replying to @graphicmatt.com

Asked by a viewer if they'd use strong mayor powers, Bradford dodges and says he's seeking a mandate from voters, and pledges to "work with everybody."("I didn't hear an answer there," Chow notes.) "I'm not going to use the strong mayor powers and destroy democracy," answers Chow.

I forgot I had leftover coffee in my thermos as I went through security again for a connecting flight and ofc it got flagged, they said I could drink it all or go back through security, so I chugged half a thing of tepid coffee standing at security. it’s like being made to smoke the rest of the pack

I’m trying to find an essay I remember seeing 2-3 months ago that offers a queer/trans analysis of Page as Sinon, which I thought I had saved and which as you might imagine is impossible to search for, does this ring a bell for anyone?

Email did to white collar work what the washing machine did to housework: creating as many problems as it solved. See, as Ruth Schwartz Cowan shows in More Work for Mother, washing machines made washing clothes much easier, but in the process, it also shifted cultural norms...

I watched the first ten seconds and closed it bc the guy was annoying and then it crossed my timeline again from a different source so I was like OKAY FINE and y’all it is WORTH it
